Hey guys... haven't posted in a long, long time because... well, nothing seemed too out-of-the-world to comment upon.
Until tonight.
Um... wow.
That was an ending, eh?
I instantly got the answer, as I'm sure a lot of boardies here did.... but Tibet?
And anyone in the know care to share when was the last time something like this happened on "Jeopardy!"?

I also thought that Carlos should have been penalized for not pronouncing his name right.TenPoundHammer wrote: ↑Tue Oct 17, 2017 7:47 pm
Weird Al is a "rock" satirist? That almost seems like it should be tagged as erratum. Most of the songs he parodies seem to fall under Top 40/pop.

Peter Nielsen died in 2005. I'm not sure what the cause was. I hope it didn't involve the Integra Life-Shaper Plus Fitness Machine that he received for coming in third. I do think Jeopardy! owes his estate some money--not legally, maybe, but morally. At the very least they should acknowledge their error and apologize.TenPoundHammer wrote: ↑Tue Oct 17, 2017 8:01 pmAnd he should be ashamed of it for the rest of his life something something wooden leg something something Edith Head?opusthepenguin wrote: ↑Tue Oct 17, 2017 7:59 pmThe important thing to remember about Kazakhstan is it's landlocked. I've heard it pronounced "Yankovich" before, and a google search provides some authority for the alternative pronunciation, and since the surname is transliterated from a Slavic language (his paternal grandparents having been from what was then Yugoslavia), the judges probably gave more leeway.sims wrote: ↑Tue Oct 17, 2017 8:05 pmI also thought that Carlos should have been penalized for not pronouncing his name right.TenPoundHammer wrote: ↑Tue Oct 17, 2017 7:47 pm

I'm strong in history (according to my LL stats), but even most history buffs don't know WW I in nearly as much detail as other big wars; and to me this was the military equivalent of one of J!'s famous "Oxbridge" pick-'em clues.

If you got at least one triple stumper right, along with FJ, congratulations! You won this episode from your couch.
I extended my Final Jeopardy streak to eight; my record is nine. If tomorrow's category is Academy Awards, that streak's probably gonna end.
Technically tonight's $1 isn't tied for the lowest win, it's the lowest win, because $1 in 1993 money is really $2 today.

Ah, visualizing maps. The bane of my existence, one of the things I hope to never have to do should I somehow get on the show. I said Georgia just to have something and was nowhere close to getting Iran.
Congrats to Manny for his third win. Don't spend today's winnings in one place.

So the occurance posted by hbomb was the last time in a non-celebrity game.cheezguyty wrote: ↑Tue Oct 17, 2017 8:51 pmThere have been two other $1 wins since then:

Interesting that the last person to win with a dollar happens to be one of the answers (unrelated to Jeopardy!) that was revealed today in the current TD.

Never said I was proud of my guess. .. I simply got caught thinking a little too far east (and North) in Asia and ended up overlooking the Persian Gulf part of the clue. In hindsight I do know that Kazakhstan is landlocked (forgot it was the largest such nation), but it must have slipped my mind somewhere along the way.opusthepenguin wrote: ↑Tue Oct 17, 2017 7:59 pmThe important thing to remember about Kazakhstan is it's landlocked. Unaware of the Peter Nielsen incident as well.. thank you for enlightening me, Opus!

Ugh. How do people not know that Iran is on the Persian Gulf?!? I can see not knowing that it borders the Caspian, but that's pretty basic.

Carlos pronounced Weird Al's last name as it would be pronounced in Eastern Europe.sims wrote: ↑Tue Oct 17, 2017 8:05 pmI also thought that Carlos should have been penalized for not pronouncing his name right.TenPoundHammer wrote: ↑Tue Oct 17, 2017 7:47 pm

I always write something. If I accidentally get it right, I'll remember really vividly and get it right next time. I did not guess right, but I did at least guess a country that wasn't landlocked.

Got Iran immediately and then kept thinking no- it’s got to be one of those other countries that border the Caspian, right?
We can laugh at Fran for writing Tibet, but I thought she played really well. Manny had an off game - let’s see if he can recover tomorrow.
The DD in NOVEL IDEA really threw me. I knew it wouldn’t be Heart of Darkness with the word darkness in the clue. I was wavering between A Tale of Two Cities and Les Misérables- prob would’ve guessed right on that one
The DD in INVENTION though? I don’t think I would have got transistor even though it popped into my head. Kept thinking LCD, LED, pixels
