Daily Double Distribution Discoveries

Alliteration is fun. But anyway…
Someone tweeted this link today, and it's fascintating, not only from a purely information standpoint, but because the animation is pleasantly hypnotic.

Indeed. It's for this reason I would go for the second row clues first in columns 1,3,4,5: better chance at a DD while still getting the gist of the category (hello, Chandler!)

Related: I was kind of disappointed that the "Also a Friends Character" category didn't have a clue that was the single word "Candlemaker". Maybe they saved that one for J!6.

This is why we saw Watson pick row four in the first column.

I'm sure this has been discussed somewhere else before, but I am too lazy too search.

More so than which column on the board, it seems like there are certain types of categories where the DDs tend to land, specifically things like literature, history and geography, and it is much less likely to get a DD in something that is "lighter", e.g. TV, sports, straight wordplay. In addition, categories with video from either a celebrity or the Clue Crew also seem to hardly ever have DDs, or is that just my imagination?

On this topic, Ty, or others, I seem to recall seeing here a breakdown of which subjects turn up most frequently in which columns. Googling provides me with no satisfaction on this front, however. On the basis of the DD heat map, I'd guess that pop culture tends to show up in column 2 and that wordplay tends to show up in column 6. Does anyone recall seeing this?

I think the targeting of DDs to certain topics and questions causes more problems than it solves. I think the producers should switch to a truly random DD location - including having two in the same category ~ 1/6 of the time, and in the top row ~occasionally. Let random chance have a greater say in how the game play goes. Let the lucky be lucky!

I have seen a DD come up in the top row once, maybe twice. I could see the argument for it happening a bit more often.

I also wouldn't mind DDs coming up in categories like Potpourri, unless they do and I just don't remember.

I've actually been curious about this for a while: in the history of the show, has there ever been an instance where both daily doubles in Double Jeopardy! have been in the same category? Is it something that's merely incredibly rare, like a daily double in the top box, or is it something that's literally never happened before?

Why does the second column have lower percentages?

I can understand the sixth column being different because it's usually a special column. They throw wordplay and think-of-the-word categories into the sixth column.

What's different about the second column?
I had a dream that I was asleep and then I woke up and Jeopardy! was on.

I believe the only time both DJ! DDs have been in the same category was when the DD placement had to be changed due to a misruling by Alex on a previous clue that gave a contestant control of the board that shouldn't have had it, that contestant picked one of the originally-designated DDs, and no option to rearrange them other than to put both in the same category existed.
