CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Nan Bauer is a writer from Michigan who has done some theater work. In particular, with your son.

Nan: Yes. My son Henry and I were in a production of Macbeth not that long ago. And we both played two roles. And in one, I got to challenge him to be a brave warrior, and in the other, I got to yell at him for being a slacker, so…

Alex: That must have made you feel really good because there’s no guilt associated with that. And you're getting out some of your concerns, right?

Nan: Exactly.

Alex: Wipe that smile off your face.

[Laughter]

Alex: Marcus Leung from San Francisco is a fashion buyer. Which means you do what exactly? Does that mean you get to go to Milan and New York and Paris for all those great fashion shows?

Marcus: Not so much the shows, mostly the trade events.

Alex: Oh.

Marcus: I get to sit in quiet offices and quiet showrooms while other people get to go to parties.

Alex: Good for you. All right.

Alex: Kathleen Kosman. Attorney from Dearborn, Michigan. Taught herself…

Kathleen: To knit.

Alex: To knit. To deal with pressure.

Kathleen: Yes. Law school's a very stressful time in pretty much anybody's life, and one of my friends was already knitting, and she showed me the basics. And from there, I started watching YouTube videos and looking up stuff online to try to get better at it.

Alex: It worked?

Kathleen: It worked.

Alex: Okay.

JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Kathleen found the Daily Double on the 21st clue. Kathleen had $1,200, Marcus had $3,400, and Nan was at $4,800. Kathleen made it a True Daily Double, wagering $1,200.

this state, not far from the Haymarket Memorial

HISTORY, WITH SOUND EFFECTS $800: On April 28, 1881 Billy the Kid escaped jail...but it was game over when this sheriff caught up with him a few months later
(Nan: Who is Wyatt Earp?)

ENDS IN "EE" $1000: Tecumseh was a member of this Native American tribe of the Ohio Valley
(Nan: Who are the Seneca?)

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Marcus: $5,200
Nan: $4,600

Billy the Kid/Pat Garrett is a basic trivia twosome that should never be a TS on J!

Lady Vols and cowcatcher were easy 4th podium gets as well.

Nan from Brooklyn, Michigan goes on the list of champs from small places. A quick search shows a population of 1,192 or 1,210 depending on the year.

Marcus showed one way of getting off track on the FJ! clue with the Wells work. I would not be surprised to see guesses of things by French writers as it can be easy to forget the category sometimes. Swift and Stevenson seem like possible detours.

J! has used South America(n) in previous clues about the work, but the Archive has no hits for Despair showing they have many ways to use popular material over and over again.

I didn’t know exactly where or when that book was set but it seemed to fit the description.

I got a chuckle from Nan’s story so I am glad she won.

New Zealand is not part of "Down Under." I don't care how many citations you want to give me where the term gets used that way. They are all wrong. No Australian will say that a New Zealander lives Down Under. And no New Zealander will say that of themselves. Sheesh. Nan got robbed on that DD. I'm glad she won in spite of that and it was awesome to watch her battle back after losing $5k.

Also home to Michigan International Speedway, which increases the village’s population exponentially on NASCAR race days.

Another sub shutout wager from the leader going into FJ. In this senario it wasn't as dangerous for Marcus to take that chance, so he went for an even $18,000. I think Nan may have anticipated him going for an even $15,000. I would have liked to see her cap the wager at 2800 which would be enough to cover him if he chose to lock out Kathleen with a 399 bet.
This would also give her a chance to win with a tie-breaker if Kathleen bets 1800 to stay above Marcus on a TS, provided Marcus makes the traditional shutout wager.

Got the Lady Vols and cowcatcher trash.

On that DD, this modified quote applies:

"As God as my witness ... I thought kiwis could fly."

Anyone else go for the (possible) Pawnee negbait thanks to Parks and Rec?

This is something that I know cold (my sister was into the Wild West for a time when we were teens) but for some reason I blurted out "[William] Bonney". Yes, I know that that is (purportedly) Billy the Kid's real name.

Judges: would "Lady Volunteers" be good enough? (I always thought "Vols" was short for the official team name, "the Volunteers". (I'd make fun of them for that nickname, but my alma mater's teams are the Wesmen and the Lady Wesmen - despite studying there for 3 years I still don't know what a Wesmen is.)

If I was a masochist I'd use that as proof people from small-town Michigan can know things in the TPH thread, but I've come to the point that I've accepted that nothing will work. (Seventh stage of being a boardie?)

I went Cherokee; it seemed too good to pass up. FJ was a coin-flip between Gulliver's Travels and Robinson Crusoe, and I guessed wrong. Lach Trash: Cowcatcher, Albatross, Kiwi.
