Well, it worked out well. And who knows what will happen today against Kristina and Rod? We start finding out, however, right now. Here we go. All right, let's take a look at the categories…

Rod: $800

CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Rod Swain is from Columbus, Ohio. He's an AmeriCorps recruiter. Is that like the Peace Corps?

Rod: It's similar. So AmeriCorps is sort of the domestic version of the Peace Corps. So hiring young people to do service work right here in the U.S., as opposed to going overseas.

Alex: Okay, good.

Alex: Kristina Witzling.

Kristina: Yes.

Alex: From Flemington, New Jersey. Are you a foodie?

Kristina: We--my husband Mark and I--are both foodies, and we’re introducing our son Josh to the tradition of collecting Michelin stars.

Alex: You collect Michelin stars?

Kristina: Michelin stars.

Alex: What's the most stars that you have seen at a restaurant? Four?

Kristina: Yeah. Three, you know, the top. Our total number of stars is well over 50.

Alex: Oh, hello. All right. You eat well.

Alex: Nan Bauer is a writer from Michigan. Now, a museum junkie.

Nan: Yeah.

Alex: And you kind of OD'ed on museums in the Netherlands once.

Nan: Little bit. We went to Amsterdam, and they have a fantastic museum card. And they've got about a hundred museums, and we said we’re going for it. So we saw about 16 in four, five days I think. It was great.

Alex: I’m glad you added that.

JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Rod found the Daily Double on the 23rd clue. Nan had $2,000, Kristina had $1,400, and Rod was at $3,800. Rod wagered $1,500.

ROBOTS $800: Used to move equipment & supplies, the 55-foot-long Canadarm2 is a giant robotic arm on this facility
(Alex: We have less than a minute to go.)

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND

(Kristina: What is secondary?)

FLORIDA CITIES $1000: This alliterative city in Broward County has been named one of the USA's best cities to live in--the trees in its name help

"R"2 "D"2 $1000: In Native American lore, this winged creature is capable of producing severe weather

SULLIVAN AWARD WINNERS $600: 2008:
Female gymnast (& future "Dancing with the Stars" winner)
[The end-of-round signal sounds.]

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Rod: $7,100
Nan: $2,000
Kristina: $0

FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
ETYMOLOGY

VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Four-fifths for first place. Shore's Conjecture.
Rod: Wager $10,901 to cover Nan. Or, you could try out a Shoretegic bet of $4,101.
Nan: Your score is within 4/5ths of Rod's, so wager between $5,001 (venusian) and $6,599 (martian), beating Rod's maximum safe bet of the difference between your scores while still covering against a doubled score on Kristina's part.
Kristina: You just can't cover a rational wager by Nan, nor can you win on a Triple Stumper. Improve your situation by wagering everything but a few bucks--and then getting Final right!

FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
This 8-letter word meaning "cultured" or "intellectual" originated with a phrenology concept

Nan: $13,400 - $6,601 = $6,799 (What is eggheaded?) (2-day champion: $21,800)
Rod: $15,900 - $11,000 = $4,900 (What is Adroit?) (2nd place: $2,000)
(Alex: [To Rod] It had to do with people who have a [*]. If you had a [*], you were deemed to be more intelligent. That's why I keep telling the barber to cut back my hair, more and more.)
[Laughter]

I liked that the J! round had a response for Styx and the DJ! round had a category COME SAIL AWAY.

The BMS on welding seemed to leave Kristina with that deer in the headlights look others have mentioned when a contestant has no idea what to add to their response.

Alex tried to let Nan get away with Stella D’Artois, but the judges could not let that one go.

The clue for Shawn Johnson was a TS while the gymnast by coincidence is making news today due to her miscarriage.

The players missed running HIT TV THEME SONGS when they could not get the singer for one clue we know will keep Hammer from a zero in the category.

The FJ! had me thinking a couple of 7-letter words with erudite and learned until I was able to write one with 8 letters: Brainiac
It had no chance to be right and I know that more time would not have helped me solve the clue.

Not much in the Archive for the word:

#6181, aired 2011-06-27 A NATURAL "HIGH" $800: This facial hair term means very cultured

The other hit only referred to literature critics using the adjective.

Nan messed up her math there and could have lost to Kristina by a dollar had Kristina got final right and went all in.

That FJ is probably going to poll pretty low and the clue was pretty esoteric. A vote for cerebral here.

"Highbrow" comes from phrenology? Brutally difficult FJ in my opinion. Cerebral was my guess but I know it didn't feel right.

Counted my guesses. Four wrong, zero right.

"Amnesty International" rings no bells.

I've never heard "cash in" to mean dead, only for literally cashing something in.

I know what phrenology is, but I just couldn't get anything going on this one.

My first guess on FJ was supercilious because I recalled that word has something to do with the head, but that was too many letters. I couldn't come up with anything good, so my final answer was BIGHEADED, which doesn't fit the clue or number of letters.

Chalk up another one for "brainiac", although I knew it was almost certainly wrong. Doubt I would have ever gotten to highbrow.

Best I could brainstorm was "Eggheads" which I figure wouldn't make the cut despite its (laughably disputable) technical correctness.

"Erudite" was the word I came up with. 7 letters. We're gonna have to open a NW10 Education Thread at this point. What in Hell's bathroom was supposed to lead me to "highbrow"? I mean, okay, Phrenology is the study of the skull and the measurements thereof. I'll be shocked if this FJ! polls at higher than 50%.

That game was a roller coaster. I thought Nan was collapsing and Rod was running away with it, then BAM!

I'm a bit embarrassed about guessing Mendel for the DD about Linnaeus, since one of my data science projects was named after Linnaeus. By me. Derp.
