CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Mary Grace Buckley is from St. Louis, Missouri. Your grandmother likes me.

Mary Grace: Yes, yes, she does. So my grandma Anne, she has a signed picture of you that one of her 13 children, my uncle Dan, got when he tried to enter the military tournament. He didn’t get on the show, but he managed to get the signed picture of you. And actually, my cousin, Jim Virtel, already talked about it when he was on the show. There are actually 39 grandchildren in all, so there could be more of us coming up the pike. I really hope there are.

Alex: Okay.

Mary Grace: Three of us so far.

Alex: Great.

Alex: Edgar Castillo from Brooklyn. Digital media specialist. A co-organizer of a Mexican food lovers’ club. My son has a Mexican restaurant. Now what do you need to belong to this club?

Edgar: Internet connection, I guess. You just join the club, we take you out. We organize brunches, happy hours, taco crawls, we call them, where you try different places in the same day.

Alex: All righty. Nice.

Alex: Nan Bauer is our champion. She’s a writer from Brooklyn, Michigan. What do you write about?

Nan: I am a food writer, so…

Alex: Oh, hello.

Nan: Yeah. I get to do some reviews, but what I really enjoy is talking to the producers. So I've talked to people who make mead, lots of organic farmers, beekeepers. Lot of fun.

Alex: That's wonderful.

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
MUSICAL GEOGRAPHY $1000: At "Holyrood, where Queen Mary lived & loved" Mendelssohn found the start of this "national" symphony
(Nan: What is Scotland?)

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Edgar: $5,800
Nan: $5,000
Mary Grace: $800

SCORES ENTERING FINAL JEOPARDY!
Nan: $11,000
Mary Grace: $7,400
Edgar: $3,400

FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
AMERICANA

VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Two-thirds for first place.
Nan: Wager $3,801 to cover Mary Grace, but no more than $4,199 so as not to fall behind Edgar's doubled score.
Mary Grace: You'll want to wager between $0 (venusian) and $200 (martian), and you'll win the game if Nan wagers enough and gets it wrong.
Edgar: Unfortunately, your score is less than the difference between the scores of the first and second place players, so unless they both blunder, you're competing for second place and have no hopes of first. Wager as much as you desire, but remember, you'll have better chances of advancing to second place if you have a larger sum left over on a Triple Stumper.

FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
The tiny town of Cayce, Kentucky was the home & supplied the nickname of a man famous in this job

FINAL SCORES
Edgar: $3,400 - $3,397 = $3 (What is a Lumberjack) (3rd place: $1,000)
Mary Grace: $7,400 - $2,400 = $5,000 (What is a moonsh pre) (2nd place: $2,000)
Nan: $11,000 + $3,801 = $14,801 (What is an engineer?) (3-day champion: $36,601)
(Alex: [To Mary Grace] You were going for moonshiner, it looks like.)
...
(Alex: [To Nan] Casey Jones, railroad engineer.)

Total Potential Lach Trash: $8,600

This seemed to be the part of the family tree in Mary Grace’s story if I heard the name correctly: http://www.j-archive.com/search.php?sea ... mit=Search

In case anyone needs another look at it this was the clue for ON “PIN”s $2000: A type of ode is named for this Greek poet

Disney’s The Brave Engineer seems the likely place I first learned about Casey Jones. The dots were there to be connected in the FJ! clue while in 2017 I can understand that even being spotted “Cayce” to “Casey” may not be enough.

Edgar and Mary Grace were 0/2 on big clues while Nan hit 50% on big clues overcoming her DD miss.
Nan has won three different ways with 2nd on a double get, 2nd on a TS, and now a traditional win from the lead.

Not that Alex dislikes anyone, but to me it seems very obvious that he really likes Nan.

Tomorrow will be a test to see if Nan went to the studio with only three outfits or packed extra for the taping day. Monday she wore something in the neighborhood of a heather blazer and a hot pink top.

That's correct. Louis tweeted out this morning that Mary Grace was his cousin.

As long as we're discussing fashion, can I just say that I LOVED Edgar's outfit? And I agree that Nan is very cool. Relaxed and personable, but very focused.

For some reason my mind jumped to Casey Kasem so I said Disc Jockey. Not as good of a fit for Americana as Casey Jones though I suppose, and they already had the DJ scratching clue so not a great guess.

Restaurateur? I actually thought there was a decent chance that could be it. It's only in hindsight that I noticed the significance of the name of the town.

I will never remember how to pronounce "acai," though I'm pretty certain I'd have been counted as right for it.

Guessed Railsplitter. Did not make the leap to "Casey" for pronouncing this previously unknown to me place name; "CASE." Doh... :x

PS Agree w/above that Nan is a sweetie! :)

That was my exact line of thought as well and, as such, baseball manager was the incorrect guess. Darn.

Add me to the list of those enjoying Nan's run as well.. it's pretty clear she knows her stuff.

I was convinced that FJ was about Casey from the poem "Mighty Casey at bat." My mom thought it was Casey Stengel. We were so damn sure that "baseball" had to be right.

Ran "Jelly Belly", and will have run "Proverbs" depending on this ruling question - would you accept "Ownership is ten points of the law?"

Nan definitely has charisma and I hope she can win five games but she needs to curb the guessing a little better. Her opponents in this game helped her out by making more errant guesses than she did. She will have her hands full against a strong player.

I thought I heard Edgar say "the blood of an englishman". That's more than four words. At least it didn't have any bearing on the outcome.

whoa. Major negbait with "Cayce." Because of the spelling I thought of Edgar Cayce and then was trying to name his occupation -- uh, Predictor? Nostradomus? Soothsayer? I settled on "healer."

That TV guide clue was odd - normally they time it for the week of airing.

Cacey - KC - KFC -- restaurateur? Didn't feel right..no wonder.

Wiki reveals that Jones first served as both brakeman and fireman and I'd wager that sometime in his career he was likely assigned at least temporary 'substitute or acting conductor' duty, so I think you might successfully challenge that neg! Certainly you were "on the right track" eh! :P

This is specifically why I included the pronunciation in my game page on TJF tonight, because the pronunciation is so critical to the TOM.
