When time ran out on Friday I was between "George Cross" and "King George Cross"; I believe I would have gone the right way. (Another difficulty on that FJ that didn't get mentioned in the thread is that the Victoria Cross is named for someone who doesn't currently need a regnal number, so determining whether the George Cross needed "VI" could be a sticking point.)

Melody Makers is something I have been aware of in the past, but there was no way I was getting it.

Swaziland for me. Knew George Cross outright without any reasoning about Victoria’s descendants. Thought the Depression clue the toughest of the week and guessed lucky with Washington over NY.
Got confused between Bob and Ziggy Marley. NHO the term for the collectible.

I thought of one landlocked monarchy in southern Africa and thought it was Miller time.

On Friday, I followed the rule that you don't reject an obvious answer merely because it's obvious. But "who was king in 1940 (and don't sweat the regnal number)" was a rather uninteresting path to the right answer.

I remember a story from my grandmother regarding Depression-era apple sellers--signs advertising "8¢ each, three for a quarter".

Swaziland; Kansas (first state that popped to mind; would never have thought of selling apples, nor connected apples to Washington, so my only chance was the 1/48 chance of picking the right one randomly); Edward Cross.

I'm pretty sure I was 0/5 on backing bands.

Thu - California; wild guess, never heard of the 'selling apples during Depression' saying.

And really? -Two- backing bands Qs in the extra clues? :|

Right, not something usually done. In this case I thought it would be fun to show how much easier the $1000 clue was for this crowd than the $200 one. You can always ask for one from next week to give you an extra smiley for the next poll.

Never heard of the medal, refrained from the logical (and correct) guess...
Someone should point out that selling apples during the Depression is not a saying - it's just a thing! I almost went with NY there, but WA seemed a safer guess...

Ironically, the only thing I didn't get was deltiologist which is odd because I still write and send postcards from my various travels.

I guessed "Georgian Cross" on Friday. If I had realized that I had even gotten close I may have given it more thought and realized that if "Victoria" by itself was the name of one then the other would probably just be the person's name by itself.

I was supposed to see Bob Seger in concert last month but he had to postpone his shows.

Found my way to apples, but went to NY. Figured out George, but called it Georgian. Can I get credit for two halves?

I had Iowa instead of Washington, thinking of corn.

I named the right person for Friday's clue (George VI), but I didn't know the awards' name (not sure of George, George VI, or Georgian).

I've probably seen the Melody Makers' name before, but didn't retain the information; I had greeting cards instead of postcards- probably not the best answer there, what with greetings being there and not in parentheses. :|

  • Monday: No guess. Borodino distracted me completely away from doing the math for the obvious response.
  • Thursday: Brain latched onto "cornhuskers" and sent me to Iowa.
  • Friday: Wild-guessed Edward.
  • ExtraQ2: Derp.
  • ExtraQ3: Greeting cards. Derp again.

Count me among those who never heard of selling apples to get through the Great Depression; thought of wheat and guessed Kansas. Guessed Mountbatten for the Cross and Namibia for the country.

Instagets on all the backing bands though.

I said "Georgian cross." If they didn't accept George's, they're not going to accept Georgian.

Thursday's was the first proper TOC FJ as it required knowing more than a single bit of trivia and then being able to tie them together in 30 seconds. Also, it's a cute image of street corner vendors selling potatoes, corn, wheat, tobacco, but it just goes to show what a creative lot folks are around here.

Friday's was tough, although most champs should have gotten to George, realizing Edward was out of the picture by 1940. The phrasing was tricky because I can see where the George Cross sounds awkward; you just had to go with the format of the example in the clue and hope that it was right. (Painful for Justin - yet another likable contestant out on a pretty perfectly reasonable guess). Albert Cross - never would have considered it, but it has a familiar ring, probably due to the (completely different Albert) Albert Hall? I'm curious if royals ever go by their given name in public after they've chosen one? Anyway, lots of ways to get to a "close by no cigar" response. But again, much more appropriate for TOC.
