CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS
Alex: Austin Rogers is our bartender from New York. Austin, you’ve enjoyed a great deal of success as a contestant on Jeopardy!, and you have a special friend who was very encouraging. I’d like you to tell the folks about Brian.
Austin: My good friend Brian Walsh, one of my best friends on Earth, passed away a couple weeks ago. Before I came out to L.A. last, he, being the insane person he is, he just goes, "Here’s $5,000. Go have a good time. I know you’re good for it." I am now good for it. However, I'm not good for it to give it back to him, so I'm going to have to do something special for all of our friends.
Alex: Okay.
Austin: Thank you.
Alex: Pass it--play it forward.
Austin: Yeah.
Alex: Pay it forward. All right.
Alex: Alan Lin. You qualified for this final yesterday. And I mentioned at the end of the program, "My gosh, Alan. You’re so nervous." And yet today, you appear to be so calm. What was it about that semifinal that had you fidgeting so much?
Alan: I honestly can't tell you what I was feeling, because I couldn't really feel my hands or feet.
[Laughter]
Alex: Well, whatever--whatever it is, keep it working for today also.
Alex: All right, Buzzy Cohen. When you won your semifinal game, there was one person in the audience that I noticed that was especially excited at you winning the game.
Buzzy: Yeah.
Alex: A fellow who’s got gray hair like me, but looks younger than me. Who is that person?
Buzzy: My high school English teacher, Dean Slater, is here. And he was here for my whole run initially on the show. And he taught me Waiting for Godot.
Alex: And the Final in that match…
Buzzy: Was Waiting for Godot.
Alex: The correct response was "What is" or "Who is Waiting for Godot?" So way to go, teacher! All right.

FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
INVENTIONS
VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Two-thirds for first place.
Alan: Wager $5,601 to cover Austin, but no more than $5,999 so as not to fall behind Buzzy's doubled score.
Austin: You'll want to wager between $0 (venusian) and $1,200 (martian), and you'll win the game if Alan wagers enough and gets it wrong.
Buzzy: Unfortunately, your score is less than the difference between the scores of the first and second place players, so unless they both blunder, you're competing for second place and have no hopes of first. Wager as much as you desire, but remember, you'll have better chances of advancing to second place if you have a larger sum left over on a Triple Stumper.

Re: Thursday, November 16, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]
The game had some laughs from the coordinated introductions with Alex trying to join in to the writers “-rolling” everyone.
The TS clues in LOVE SONGS were painful as I added $6K to my score.
Today’s Buzzy was the one that had me keeping him out of my Gold group. He’s fortunate to still be in contention after spotting his opponents a game. Austin went 1/3 on big clues and the damage would seem to be minimal. Alan has the lead, but 2300 in a 2-day affair is next to meaningless.
The guys went 0/3 on the FJ! clue and I was closer to Buzzy with my miss than A&A who had the right maker. Apple products never occurred to me and I had no good guess when I wrote Segway (knew it was earlier) to avoid the blank page.
If I had narrowed my options to the 50:50 Austin had I think I would have gone the right way although I cannot be sure after the fact. We’ll see if the strikeout response by Austin matters tomorrow.
This was J!6 for Current Events:

Re: Thursday, November 16, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]
I thought IPhone was the very obvious answer, and the easiest FJ so far this week. I do wonder if we benefit from some recent 10th anniversary publicity that might not have been around when this was filmed.

Lach Trash: tentacles, Kalamata
All but "fungi" in Slugs. Apparently my plant knowledge lags behind my animal knowledge.
Strangely, I had none of the words in Triple Rhyme Time for $400 because I couldn't get away from "wreck" in time. Mom got it, though.
Also didn't have any of the Rhyme Time words at $1,600 because I didn't know what "russet" was, and had all but "Retrieval" at $2,000.
So are all clue corrections done in medias res now? They used to wait until DDs...
Poll request for Willie Nelson/Julio Iglesias. I thought that one was the most obscure in the category, especially with the Rickroll at $800.
So both mom AND I got a TS right?!

I went the opposite way of Austin. My initial thought was iPad, but there was enough press about the iPhone X being the tenth anniversary iPhone to change my response quickly.

I suspect that's because Buzzy was about to call out Austin's addition of the "s" as well.TenPoundHammer wrote: ↑Thu Nov 16, 2017 7:28 pm So are all clue corrections done in medias res now? They used to wait until DDs...

Yeah, with the hubbub over the X and the 10th anniversary, this was an instaguess for me.
Oh, what has science wrought? I sought only to turn a man into a metal-encased juggernaut of destruction powered by the unknown properties of a mysterious living crystal. How could this have all gone wrong?

I got that...!#$*)$...Astley song (trying not to curse) and Soft Cell. I'm not even sure what songs the other three were.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Thu Nov 16, 2017 6:15 pm The TS clues in LOVE SONGS were painful as I added $6K to my score.
I was about to scream "BUT HE ADDED AN 'S' TOO!", but they corrected themselves and took the money away. I'm still annoyed that they allowed those papal names without a number. I'm pretty sure I complained last time they accepted 'Benedict' without a number too, so I guess that's just how it works now.
Super-instaget FJ from the year alone, I remember thinking the same thing about smartphones when they first came out, and now they've taken over the planet. Surprised that it was a TS, but then I was lost at sea with that Waiting for Godot FJ so.
Should be an exciting finale. These scores are so low that they basically don't matter.

Re: Thursday, November 16, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]
So Buzzy made it plural, Austin did not. He said "a brown clown's down", or "a brown clown is down". Per the rules of Jeopardy, does this make a difference?
When Austin found his first DD, he deviated from the strategy that got him there. It was a 2nd row clue with ~80 clues left, this was the perfect time for a TDD.
I've said that in a two game format that today's FJ should be treated as a DD. Buzzy did the right thing without question, I'm not sure what to think about the other two wagers. Definitely a tough spot.

2007 seemed a little early for the iPad, but I remember a common criticism when it was first announced being, "Who would want this giant thing?"
I have a first gen iPod Touch, which is the same size as the iPhone. It's tiny.

Hammer: Request seen (What? No adjective before "obscure?") although I think I'll go with one of those separate polls for all of the clues as I like to test the valuing. I can't judge the placement because they are all first box for me.

I guess. They need to state the rules explicitly if that's the way they want it. I'm with you in the ranks of the annoyed.

Wow. I came for a slugfest, not a trainwreck. (No disrespect to the excellent contestants, each of whom strikes me as able to have a sense of humor about some of those awkward moments.)
Mrs P got Beer and Skittles, and Poultice as trash. She felt deservedly proud of herself.

Thanks. *hits YouTube* OK, that Lionel Ritchie song is a bit of a forehead slapper. Like many songs, I recognize the tune, but never knew the title or the artist. The other two I've legit never heard before in my life, and they were godawful. Sorry Casey.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Thu Nov 16, 2017 7:53 pm

I actually recognized every song but "Making Love". I didn't realize how big a hit "To All the Girls..." was since I remember scratching my head at Julio having a #1 hit on the country music charts.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Thu Nov 16, 2017 7:53 pm"To All The Girls I've Loved Before" peaked at No. 5 & 12 weeks in the Top 40xxaaaxx wrote: ↑Thu Nov 16, 2017 7:35 pmI got that...!#$*)$...Astley song (trying not to curse) and Soft Cell. Re: Thursday, November 16, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]
Quite an interesting first game in the finals, starting with the introductions. Looks like the quirkiness rubbed off on Alan, particularly since he's stuck in the middle.
I managed the following:
R: 21
W: 2 costing 1400
Coryat 13,000 Got a lot more right in the J! round than DJ!
FJ! First one this week.
LT: poultice
Very much a back and forth game. I'd have to go back and count, but I think the buzzing in was split pretty evenly. Certainly no one was completely off their buzzer game this time. Buzzy seemed to be getting an unusual number of responses wrong, costing him a bit.
(Went back and counted - Buzzy was first to ring in on 12 clues, Alan 13, Austin 18. Slight advantage to Austin, but pretty even.)
I'm really surprised at the (technically) triple stumper in FJ! iPhone first sold in 2007 is one of the trivia bits that I have down. So the combination of the date and description made it a pretty quick get for me.
With only 8800 between 1st and 3rd, it's still anybody's game tomorrow.
