These were the five clues in LOVE SONGS, NOTHNG BUT ‘80s LOVE SONGS

$400 - A duet: “To all the girls we’ve loved before, who traveled in & out our doors, we’re glad they came along”

$800 - “Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down, never gonna run around & desert you”

$1200 - “Hello, is it me you’re looking for?...& you know just what to do, & I want to tell you so much, I love you”

$1600 - “This tainted love you’ve given, I give you all a boy could give you, take my tears & that’s not nearly all…tainted love”

$2000 - “Making love out of nothing at all…out of nothing at all…out of nothing at all…out of nothing at all”

The artists required for the correct response:
Spoiler

Air Supply
The players were 3/5 missing the $400 & $2000 clues.

5/5 for me. Precalled Air Supply when the category was revealed. Just wouldn't be an 80s love song category without them.

I'm sure I have 4/5 songs and fairly sure I don't have the Willie & Julio song.
There is no doubt I have heard all of the songs. Let's just say more than once.

I would recognize "Never Gonna Give You Up," and am certain I've heard "To All the Girls I've Loved Before," which I think I have on a Willie Nelson compilation CD. I think I've heard "Tainted Love," but wouldn't say for sure. No clue on the other two.

Did it seem like there were an unusual number of pop music categories this tournament? Maybe I'm just noticing because it's a weak spot.

They're in pretty good order for me. Got Willie and Julio almost immediately. Absolutely sure I heard the next two many, many times. But I have no idea who Rick Astley is, even though I could sing along with the song. Wouldn't have put Lionel with that song (again, I can sing along with it). Tainted love sounded more like an Adele song to me - obviously wrong for an 80s category. Last lyrics don't ring any bells - I got nothing at all ... nothing at all ... nothing at all ... (is there one more??) ... nothing at all.

Only got Astley, but I have heard Tainted Love. The other three all drew a complete blank.

5/5 I would’ve practically squealed in excitement to get this category. Mr Kid::80s Love Songs is like Cliff Clavin::Civil Servants.

4/5, missing SoftCell.

All that Rickrolling finally paid off.

I remember one night when Johnny Carson had Willie Nelson on, and sang for him the opening of that song in his attempted Willie voice. Willie answered with the next line in a pretty good Julio.

I precalled Air Supply, but "All Out of Love" is the only song of theirs I would recognize by the lyrics. I got everything between them and Nelson/Iglesias; I don't have any of the songs in my own collection.

I got the first 3.

If I've heard "To all the Girls..." then I don't recall it. I've obviously heard Rick Astley.

I knew $1,600 was Soft Cell, but was blanking on the name.

I should have recognized the Lionel Ritchie song, the other two I heard for the first time looking them up on Youtube (and hated them both). And I certainly don't have any of them.

Living in Ireland and the UK in the 1980s paid off - there was no way I was missing either Astley or Soft Cell. And our CD collection includes multiple 80s collections as well as Soft Cell albums.

I only didn't run the category because I called Julio "Enrique Iglesias".

After yelling 'AIR SUPPLY!" at the TV, I had the horrible realization that I am probably older than all three ToC finalists. Or maybe I am just old.

I thought Lionel Richie was $200 level common knowledge, but I may be overestimating it because I think I've seen a number of memes based on the song (I admittedly wasn't born when it was released).

An interesting bit of trivia is that "Tainted Love" is a cover. The original was recorded by Gloria Jones in 1965. The Soft Cell version is an absolute classic, though, and I think needs to be considered one of the greatest songs in the New Wave genre.

Interestingly, when I was doing TPH's dirty work for him above, this video came up in the "related videos bar, perhaps you may be misremembering it, or no YouTube video exists of your version. I kind of hope it's the latter as I like your story better.

As an 80s kid I've heard all of these, but could only name the artist in time on two: Lionel Richie and Rick Astley (I'm counting that one, even though I was laughing too hard to click my pen and give my answer in time - haven't laughed that hard on Jeopardy! in a while!) Knowing the artists (or actors for a movie) is not my forte, even if I"m familiar with the song. (For $400 I knew Willie Nelson but couldn't think of his partner. For $1600 erroneously said "Free Cell" instead. )

I had a vague idea the last one was by one of those Air Supply/Foreigner-ish bands I never guess correctly in the Pointless app, even though I don't think I've ever actually heard the song.

Tainted Love was the only one I thought I might have in my music library, but I checked, and I don't. I don't even have the Marilyn Manson version from Not Another Teen Movie. But I do have this version.
