SCORES ENTERING FINAL JEOPARDY!
Kyle: $14,400
Katia: $9,600
Joe: $4,000
FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
TIME MAGAZINE'S PERSON OF THE YEAR
VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Two-thirds (exactly) for first place.
Kyle: Wager $4,800 for the tie. Katia has cause to bet either nothing or everything, and you can't afford to lose by $1 to a nothing bet.
Katia: It's all or nothing, baby. You have even hope of returning to battle Kyle next game if you wager $9,600 or $0. Either way, you're banking on a bet to tie by Kyle and the ability to prevail in the future.
Joe: Unfortunately, your score is less than the difference between the scores of the first and second place players, so unless they both blunder, you're competing for second place and have no hopes of first. You can wager as much as you feel like, but since you'll have better chances of advancing to second place if you have a larger sum left over on a Triple Stumper, you might just want to wager $0.
FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
Since "Man of the Year" became "Person of the Year" in 1999, only 1 individual woman has won: this European for 2015
FINAL SCORES
Joe: $4,000 + $3,999 = $7,999 (Who is Angela Merkel?) (3rd place: $1,000)

Re: Thursday, December 7, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]
The VP who resigned, the set of horse races with the big purse, Twain’s frog county, Bartleby’s job…
A 28,400 combined Coryat leaves plenty of material available for the 4th podium.
Nice timing (that’s sarcasm) by the writers to have this guy’s clue today:
I’M AMEN-ABLE TO THAT $1200: This singer got a No. 1 country single & CMA award for “Forever and Ever, Amen”
The FJ! clue had my pen down quickly, so I spent think time trying to guess any possible misses. I had:
Malala
Theresa May
Kate Middleton
Each was wrong with no chance for multiple reasons and I failed to come up with any more names to get a player off track.
Four wins and $63K was good enough for page 2 of the TOC Tracker for the previous go-around while in other cycles it’s made the cut for a return invite. Congrats to Kyle for earning the prestige of sitting atop the list.

Re: Thursday, December 7, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]
I don't get Joe's strategy on that DD - at that point in the game, you have to go all in just to have a chance to win.
Which, we debate DD strategy all the time and I'm in the camp that says that it's hard to judge how someone standing there feels about a clue, but when you're almost $10,000 behind the leader as the game is wrapping up, there don't seem to be any strategic options left. If the category is a personal worst, I guess it might be worth betting some nominal amount ($5) and moving on to a better category.

Re: Thursday, December 7, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]
That movie quotes category was brutal for me. When I had no clue at the first one (and I still have no clue what it was from), I knew it would be trouble. The only one of the 5 I've seen is Pulp Fiction.

I've heard of Flavor Flav and Public Enemy, but didn't know the former was a member of the latter. That was my only miss in the category.
Honestly didn't know what part of speech "too" was. Derp.
Didn't recognize anything in that Literature category.
NHO "teleconference" or "Master of the Senate". Saw no way to figure out the latter.
Poll request on "Randy Travis".
Ran the Prayer category.
Lach Trash: Calaveras County, OneRepublic, Hawaiian Islands, Randy Travis, "now I lay me down to sleep", Julia Ward Howe
No guess on FJ! This seemed like a "shot in the dark" clue.

As long as it's not one of the extra clues, I'd like a chance at 8/8 this week
Was that the Sandra Bullock quote? "The Blind Side" was part of the quote itself (which is the only reason I got it, never seen it), but even then it took a few seconds to click, so yeah. I haven't seen Wonder Woman yet so that was a no go, but at least I got to quote Pulp Fiction again
Instaget FJ.

I replayed them and looked them up since I only got the $800 & $1200 clues and have only seen Pulp Fiction of the five as well.xxaaaxx wrote: ↑Thu Dec 07, 2017 7:39 pmAs long as it's not one of the extra clues, I'd like a chance at 8/8 this week

Instaget FJ.
$400: “Tony here is your quarterback, all right? You protect his blind side. When you look at him, you think of me”
$800: “Ezekiel 25:17…& I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance & furious anger those who…poison…my brothers”
$1200: In 2017 this actress asked, “How can a woman fight in this?”
$1600: “Tomorrow, after the game, I, Jackie Moon, will wrestle a bear”
$2000 “Details of your incompetence do not interest me. Tell Simone I’m not going to approve that girl…for the Brazilian layout”
Correct responses:
Spoiler
Sandra Bullock (From The Blind Side)
Samuel L. Jackson (from Pulp Fiction)
Gal Gadot (from Wonder Woman)
Will Ferrell (from Semi-Pro)

This would have been tough without the word "European", but the clue as written was a lay up.

Agreed. This became an insta-get, given that tease-out.
LT: Calaveras County, Bartleby the Scrivener, "now I lay me down to sleep"
5/5 Parts of Speech
My English teachers would be proud.

I recognized The Blind Side as a Sandra Bullock movie, but I forgot to RTFC and had no idea what they wanted. Then in the second box, I recognized the quote, but gave the movie and not the actor. Did AT explain the category?
Also, what led everyone to Merkel?

FJ was an instaget, but I am curious how this would have polled had it come up a few weeks ago, prior to the news coverage of Trump preemptively "turning down" the Man of the Year award. Pretty sure I would have gotten to her eventually but it may have taken me some time.

37 right.
Animals (4), 19th Century (4), University (4), Literary (2), Band (2), Speech (2)
Desert (3), Pulitzer (3), "I" Opera (4), OED (3), Amen (3), Parts (3)
Lach Trash: Breeders' Cup, Calaveras County, Tartuffe, John Paul Jones, John C. Calhoun, Hawaiian Islands; Daily Double: Kalahari Desert
I was thinking of either Angela Merkel or Theresa May, and went with the former.

Yep, he pretty much surrendered there. As it played out, had he wagered the additional $2k he could have won going into FJ instead of having zero chance. None of the three DD wagers were near optimal.Elijah Baley wrote: ↑Thu Dec 07, 2017 3:41 pm I don't get Joe's strategy on that DD - at that point in the game, you have to go all in just to have a chance to win.
Of course Katia should have wagered 0 in FJ but that wasn't going to happen. Kyle obviously made a math error and wagered an extra $1k.
On the $2k clue in movie quotes had I been a contestant I would have instantly rang in, hung my head, and quietly given the answer. A chick flick I know way better than I should.

Agreed, European made this Final a sinch. 34 right for me in total -- need to stop getting disappointed when country music clues draw crickets.
Rooting for Kyle to win one more time tomorrow so he can avoid the Tim Kutz/Todd Giese treatment.

They could have made that category a little more baby boomer friendly.
I didn't get too excited over any of the other categories as well. I'm gonna let J6 slide tonight.

Thought about Theresa May and Queen Elizabeth II but Merkel was my answer. The movie quotes category wasn't as bad as the board is making it out to be. I've only seen Pulp Fiction but at least 3 of the ones I hadn't seen were gettable just on context.
32R, I got Calaveras County, scrivener, Tartuffe, adverb, Kalahari, Julia Ward Howe, John Paul Jones, and Gal Gadot. I didn't get Sam Houston or FDR/Eleanor.
