Alex: Sarah Woodring is from Sturgis, Kentucky, and she's an avid sports fan. And what's this about superstitions relating to the teams you follow?

Sarah: Well, particularly with Kentucky basketball. College basketball is a huge thing in Kentucky.

Alex: Oh, yes.

Sarah: And one of the superstitions we have is that if someone leaves the room, and the team goes on a run, starts scoring a lot of points, the person can't come back to the room. 'Cause the idea is that the team started doing well when that person left, so they can't come back until, like, something bad happens with the team.

Alex: But they wouldn't know that the team has done well.

Sarah: They would. You just tell 'em to stay out of the room, you know, "We've gone on a run," and that's the superstitions. Maybe it's based on that.

Alex: All right. Good for you. It's helped the teams. They've done well over the years.




Alex: Ian Shin, professor from Lewiston, Maine. You're big with Legos, aren't you?

Ian: I am. When I started teaching at Bates College last year, I decided that I would decorate my office with Legos. And I would buy one set a month, to pace myself. And I say that I'd keep them for students who are nervous or upset, so they can fidget with something, but they're actually for me.

Alex: LaKedra Pam, an OB-GYN physician who works in prisons also. Tell me about that.

LaKedra: So I work for the Louisiana State University system, and part of that involves taking care of women who are incarcerated in the state prison. I do normal Well Woman check-ups and things like that, but I also do prenatal care for women who are incarcerated while in prison--while pregnant.

LaKedra certainly earned the applause for running ANAGRAMMED STATE CAPITALS. I can never do it from the comfort of home and she did it on stage.

Hmm. If LaKedra bets for Ian doubling that is 23,200. If she adds a buck that makes her wager 7,601. If you take away 7,601 from LaKedra’s 15,600 that leaves her with 7,999. Does Ian bet to be at 8000 or higher on a miss? Nope. But he did make sure Sarah could not beat him as he stayed just above 2000 doubling.

No chance for me on the FJ! clue. I did high school French translation of “church” to get église. Never heard of that city. I then went for the pope path and wrote Avignon. As for any place in France including Paris and other than Nice or Marseille any pin the tail on the map work would be a blind guess. Looks like I was only about 1,000 miles off.

Why did the Robert clues "zoom in" like the other clues, just to show the contestants again?

Those poetry clues were very obscure IMO. I knew "bridge of sighs" (not "size") from "776 Stupidest Things Ever Said", but NHO the rest.

Lach Trash: double sharp, click track. I thought "double sharp" was very tough relative to the other ones. I'm a nearly lifelong piano player and I've only seen them a handful of times.

My precall was that FJ! would be a NHOI for me, since I've kinda been on a roll there lately. I know there's something called Dunkirk, but not what. Even Alex saying "kirk" had me stumped.

Why, oh, why can't J! ask real questions about State Capitals? Apparently, that's in their charter or something, because they never seem to do that. At least I managed to get one. Thank you, letter X.

No chance on FJ for me. I guessed that Flemish might be close to German, but knowing Kirche (thank you, Herr Bohner) didn't help me get to the answer. You'd need to know that Flemish uses a hard "ch" where German uses a soft "ch", then switch to the French side of Flemish for "dune", then reverse the order. That's a long way to go for the solve. (Yes, a bit of post mortem googling was involved here.) That, or you'd need to know French geography and guess the right city in northern France. Definitely a tough question today.

On further reflection, simply reversing the English from "church of the dunes" to "dune church" might get you there. I'll have to keep that path in mind in the future. Knowing a smattering of foreign languages is always helpful in J!, but simply putting words in different orders might be enough.

Ian seemed to be more concerned about staying ahead of Sarah than staying ahead of LaKedra. His wager kept him ahead of Sarah for 2nd place rather than wagering 3599 to stay ahead of LaKedra if both he and LaKedra were wrong. Had he wagered correctly, he would have won today.

I am happy to see LaKedra win another game. She had a strong game again today, even while Ian was giving her a run for her money.
