One for the judges - pit master instead of pit boss?
I say no. As a BBQ term, fine, but the clue also asked for the title of a supervisor in a casino.
I'd rather cuddle then have sex. If you're into grammar, you'll understand.

My ex-husband was a casino dealer for three years, and I never, ever, ever heard a pit boss referred to as a pit master during that time or my other trips to Las Vegas, so my ruling would be ooh, sorry.

I'm sure I saw some of those commercials (I just refreshed my memory on YouTube), but there's no way I was getting that FJ!.

The Buffy triple stumper made me sad. Was surprised at the planetarium TS--I'm not always the best with video clues, but it seemed pretty unmistakable unless they forgot that a planetarium is "a thing".

Had a rooting interest in Eileen...oh, well.

For the ecumenical conference clue I said Vatican II. Judges?
In thinking through this more, "ecumenical council" should have been a BMS. The Vatican councils were ecumenical councils, but also were Trent, Nicaea, Chalcedon, etc. My guess is that once the judges started debating whether to accept ecumenical or not, they couldn't really give the extra time to ask for the BMS. This would mean they also debated on throwing out the clue altogether, which had to be a fun discussion.

It would have been funny if it had been the Geico amphibian. It took me a bit to remember the beer’s name but got it in plenty of time.
There are (were?) a couple of Juan Valdez coffee shops in Manhattan. Yes, they promote Columbian coffee.

I think Vatican council was actually the intended answer. Looks like there may have been some debate among the judges on the given response that was edited out.
But would the word "council" be required? I wasn't able to decide for myself if Vatican II was good enough, since the clue specified it was second and I doubt they'd have accepted just Vatican...
MTGcollegestudent wrote: Thu Dec 21, 2017 9:31 pm You know, as a somewhat TV junkie, you would think this should have been an easy one since I've watched TV on a morning basis. But if you haven't spent a lot of time watching TV and/or maybe living under a rock, this could really be a struggle for most people. This is one of those "How could I have not know that?" kind of FJs. But wow...they nearly stumped us with an FJ! that would have been hard to figure out.
Not a lot of beer ads in the morning, I'd guess... ;)
My own problem was not being absolutely sure which Mexican beer the ads promoted. But I made the right choice...

Congrats, John. Thanks, Kate for the alpha-person betting strategy. We precalled your wager before the game started - SHOOT THE MOON!!! You didn't lose $1000 today, you won a reputation.

John must have felt pretty good to see the hard clue swung out there with a perfect bet for a TS or sole solve. Third to first, just like that! And he must have felt even better that he knew the actor by name because this was pretty much YEKIOYD.

I read the link posted by someone here a few months ago (Alietr? Mark B?) about this actor and/or heard him interviewed on Fresh Air. He said he was the old man at the casting call and seemed to have no chance, but it was pointed out that a young man couldn't have led an interesting life and the rest is history. This backstory would have pointed me away from the Hemingway TOM and I wonder if this is a revisionist history version of his screen test.

No complaints about the clue, there are oughtta-know YEKIOYDS and this could be one of them. Especially since I've read/heard long interviews.

Good luck tomorrow, John.

I was able to rule out Mr. Clean, but I couldn't get past Brawny, even though Hemingway doesn't strike me as the lumberjack type.

Coryat: $34,000
46 R/2 W
DD: 3/3
FJ:
LT: planetarium, Christo, influenza, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, tarp/TARP, Stuart Little Dorrit (DD)

I knew Goldsmith's name from reading about him in articles over the years, but I'm surprised Hemingway-type wasn't enough to get at least two of the contestants to the correct brand.

The namesake items for Christo's "The Umbrellas" installation were assembled in, and displayed near, my hometown of Bakersfield, California. I"m pretty sure Christo and Jeanne-Claude spoke at some sort of assembly at my school, but I remember nothing else about it.
Sprinkles are for winners.

I thought some of those "Most interesting man in the world" ads were pretty funny, my wife thought they were uniformly awful.

Instant FJ for both of us.

I saw an interview or read an article with Shaq and he said something to the effect of "I can't sign my letters with 'Love, Shaq' - the B52s ruined that for me"

I got FJ but missed a lot of other clues. I got 2/3 daily doubles but missed "Stuart Little Dorrit." I know that's a Dickens book but don't know the plot. I guessed "Stuart Little Women" without knowing the second half.
I had a dream that I was asleep and then I woke up and Jeopardy! was on.

Is there a reason you didn't guess the one you knew was a Dickens book, even if you didn't know the plot, rather than guessing the non-Dickens book that definitely doesn't have that plot?

I think I missed part of this story...

I didn't know the plot of "Little Women" either and my thought process was "Stuart Little...." think of a book that has little in the title.... "Stuart Little Women."

Little Women just came to mind faster than Little Dorrit. The contestant Johnny said Little Lord Fauntleroy and I'm pretty sure he used the same thought process I used.

On FJ, I didn't recognize the name, so had to run down the TOM path. Who looked a bit like Hemmingway? I went straight to the Gorton's fisherman. I probably have an extra bias to seafarers with Hemmingway, as the only book of his I recall reading is Old Man and the Sea. For some reason (probably bad and unfounded reasons), I see Hemmingway as the Old Man. So I couldn't get the sailor concept out of my mind.
I too could come up with only the Gorton's fisherman, for the reasons you mentioned.

Shoulda done better in MEDICAL HISTORY but stared at IMR for a while and came up with nothing. Maladay ending in -A also escaped me.

NHO CREEP or GOAT in those contexts

Can't believe I missed Christo; can't believe the players missed Christine Lagarde

Also went with Marlboro Man. Might have heard of the most interesting man once in my life, but I'm not exposed to a lot of advertising these days

Someone tell me, what was Johnny's optimal wager on that late round DD? Assuming a miss, would he want to be left with 1/2 of 2nd place's score or the difference between 1st and 2nd? Or something else? I would have gone big on that category, and it would have paid off... but I still would have lost ;)

I think he wagered well for the situation. Of course, it was a pretty good position to be in; he could go for the lead on a correct response while staying above 2/3 Kate's score on a miss. His range for that was $2,401 to $3,466. (And then he threw the 2/3 advantage away by wagering to catch up to Kate instead of trying to stay above $6,400, but she had established a pattern of betting everything on FJ rather than covering the player behind her, and perhaps he also noticed he could try to catch up to her while staying above Eileen's score on a TS.)

Edit: corrected upper limit of his wagering range

I would have bet a little more on the DD to get a lead of more than $800 in case there was still time for another clue.

I was a little surprised that this was not a triple get - then again, I knew exactly who they meant but took a few seconds to remember the product (and then to remember how to actually spell it).

Which is the risk of some famous ad campaigns - they take on a life of their own and the product becomes secondary. Which I suspect isn't what's intended.

Has anyone ever heard of "bark" on barbecued meat before? That one was a real head scratcher

I had never heard the term, but got it from context, as I think the contestant probably did, as well. "Hmm, barbecued meat has a crusty exterior, exterior of a tree, bark is a good enough guess to ring in."

I didn't know there was term for the exterior of barbecued meat, but if the clue had said "just like bread," I would have guessed "crust." If the clue had said "oyster," I would have said "shell."

Sometimes it's not the answer, but the hint that leads us to a WECIB. "Outside of a tree" leads to bark, pretty much regardless of what the rest of the clue says.
I'm not the defending Jeopardy! champion. But I have played one on TV.
