Maybe the academy should just have a host-less Oscars show this year. Few people seem willing to host it, and I think the host plays a big part in why the shows are so damn long.

Yes, he's more famous for F Troop, Mayberry R.F.D. and Mama's Family.
the first thing that came to mind when i heard that ken berry died was the brady bunch episode in which he appeared...never knew he was in f troop...i used to have some f troop comic books as i collected old tv show comics, but really knew anything about that show

Maybe they should get Max Headroom to host.

University of Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray wins the 2018 Heisman Trophy. He's the second OU QB in a row to win, after Baker Mayfield last year.

Murray was selected 9th overall by the Oakland Athletics in last summer's MLB draft, and has said all along that he fully intends to quit football and play baseball. I wonder if he'll stick with that if his NFL draft stock rises and some desperate team is willing to take him top 10. That's an extra $10-20M guaranteed, as opposed to the $5M the A's would give him.

Huh, according to that, the Republic of the Congo joined this year back in June. That one slipped under the radar something slick.

Probably worth mentioning...especially since it you can sum it up in two, three words (depending if you include 'movement' or not).

Yellow Vest movement shuts down France in protest over gas tax increase

More than 280,000 protesters donned yellow safety vests that motorists are required to keep in their cars and took to the streets across France last weekend.
(It's not named after the yellow Tour de France jersey)

If there ever is a clue about them, remember that the French term for yellow vests is "gilet jaunes".

The Golden State Warriors are the Sports Illustrated Sportsmen of the Year. I think they are just the second team to win the award after the 1980 US Olympic hockey team.

Time magazine on Tuesday named a group of journalists, including a slain Saudi Arabian writer and a pair of Reuters journalists imprisoned by Myanmar’s government, as its “Person of the Year,” in a cover story headlined “The Guardians and the War on Truth.”

“For taking great risks in pursuit of greater truths, for the imperfect but essential quest for facts that are central to civil discourse, for speaking up and for speaking out, the Guardians — Jamal Khashoggi, the Capital Gazette, Maria Ressa, Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo — are Time’s Person of the Year 2018,” Time editor-in-chief and CEO Edward Felsenthal said in a statement.

Coinciding with the announcement the J! writers put a category DE-CAP-ITATE 'EM! in the DJ! round. Ouch.

Kind of a current events coupled with dream or nightmare Millionaire question:

Of these four who is the only player elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame?

A: Orel Hershiser
B: Harold Baines
C: Joe Carter
D: Will Clark

Answer:
Spoiler
Harold Baines (Lee Smith also got in) got in by a vote of Today's Game Era Committee.

Of those four, I'd argue that Hershiser's credentials are perhaps the most compelling. Hard for me to say as a lifelong Giants fan, but there it is...

Is Khashoggi the first individual to receive the award posthumously?

Is Khashoggi the first individual to receive the award posthumously?
From Deadline.com:
Spoiler
Time magazine sidestepped both Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin to name their watchdogs as Person of the Year. Announced on NBC’s Today show this morning, the magazine’s 2018 Person of the Year is, collectively, The Guardians in the war on truth. The magazine specifically cited four journalists and one newspaper as “representative of a broader fight by countless others around the world.”

The journalists, including Jamal Khashoggi, each of whom have been either jailed or killed in doing their work, include Maria Ressa, Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo and staff of the Capital Gazette of Annapolis, Md.

Time’s editor in chief, Edward Felsenthal, wrote in an essay about the choice, “Like all human gifts, courage comes to us at varying levels and at varying moments. This year we are recognizing four journalists and one news organization who have paid a terrible price to seize the challenge of this moment.”

The journalists, Felsenthal writes, “are representative of a broader fight by countless others around the world — as of Dec. 10, at least 52 journalists have been murdered in 2018 — who risk all to tell the story of our time.”

The magazine will feature on four separate covers Khashoggi, Ressa, the Gazette staff and the wives of Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo.

Khashoggi, of course, is the Washington Post columnist and Saudi dissident assassinated in October. Maria Ressa is the editor of a Philippine news website known for its critical coverage of its president’s violent policies, and Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo are two Reuters journalists arrested in Myanmar while investigating a massacre of Rohingya Muslims. The five Capital Gazette staff members were killed by a gunman.

Khashoggi was among 10 finalists for Person of the Year announced by Time yesterday, but “Guardians” as a group was not – perhaps an attempt to throw press and speculators off the trail. The others were President Donald Trump, Separated Families, Vladimir Putin, Robert Mueller, Ryan Coogler, Christine Blasey Ford, March for Our Lives Activists, Moon Jae-In and Meghan Markle.

The Person of the Year title is not necessarily an honor, but rather the person or idea that’s had the most impact. Hitler and Stalin were, famously, among the cover choices.

Last year’s choice was “The Silence Breakers,” individuals who spoke up against sexual harassment and assault.  or award, but representative of the influence the person — or idea — has had on the news within the past year, for better or worse.

Time says this year’s choice marks the first posthumous Person of the Year.
Yes.

2019 inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: Janet Jackson, the Cure, Def Leppard, Stevie Nicks, Radiohead, Roxy Music, and the Zombies.

Nicks becomes the first woman to be inducted a second time, her first was as a member of Fleetwood Mac in 1998.

Jackson has also had a #1 album in four different decades; the latest was Unbreakable (2015). Only she, Bruce Springsteen, and Barbra Streisand have done that.
