I think any attempt by a penguin to play basketball would look frantic. It would also look hilarious and adorable and would get its first million YouTube hits the day it was released. This Is Kirk! wrote: ↑Wed Jan 03, 2018 1:00 amTrying to trim a couple inches off that penguin belly after too much holiday cheer?

Being from CA (after almost 40 years, do I get to claim to be a Californian?), CA roll was obvious (though I have never had one). Also I married a Buffalo gal who had her own recipe for hot wings. She never took me to Anchor Bar. Her go-to place was Duff's.

This game is a win for the Intermediate Form of Shore's Conjecture. The second-place player bet "small." --Bob

Both Woolf and Lessing have come up as photo clues in the past year, and both were TS!

I'm sure I missed Lessing from podium 4 as well. Woolf, I know on sight, no TOM required. She looks like a pre-Raphaelite painting come to life. (Lest anyone be confused, I mean that in a good way.)

Yes, at any rate in that one profile shot that they always use, when she was twenty years old.opusthepenguin wrote: ↑Wed Jan 03, 2018 2:52 pm

Coryat: $37,000
45 R/1 W
DD: 2/3
FJ:
LT: appendicitis (DD), Ray of Light, Levites (DD)
I felt pretty confident with my response of George Eliot, but it turns out she died 60 years too soon. I think I was under the impression that Virginia Woolf was American, but either way, she never crossed my mind.
I thought the McCarthy clue was pinned terribly.
The Debby Boone clue mentioned that "You Light Up My Life" was one of the most popular songs of the 1970s. And how. My wife and I were born nine weeks apart, and YLUML was the #1 song in the country when each of us was born.

Curious about what ranked below the Boone song I found the list here: https://www.billboard.com/articles/news ... hits-1970sBigDaddyMatty wrote: ↑Wed Jan 03, 2018 7:22 pm Coryat: $37,000

Yay, I have heard all the songs and none of the artists are unfamiliar to me. With that decade I couldn't be sure. 1980s would be no doubt.

Yluml was the only significant hit for songwriter Joseph Brooks, who committed suicide a few years ago while under investigation for sexual misconduct. He also wrote another Debby Boone hit, "California" and the Roberta Flack hit "If Ever I See You Again."BigDaddyMatty wrote: ↑Wed Jan 03, 2018 7:22 pm The Debby Boone clue mentioned that "You Light Up My Life" was one of the most popular songs of the 1970s. I'd rather cuddle then have sex. If you're into grammar, you'll understand.

If you ask me, the cello is head and shoulders ahead of anything else to listen to for hours as a solo instrument. Not screechy like a violin, far more expression than a piano. In the hands of an expert, it speaks directly to your soul.twelvefootboy wrote: ↑Tue Jan 02, 2018 11:46 pmI'm not sure I've heard enough cello solos to know if that would get old, but it might be the one instrument you could endure against your will as a captive audience. That, and a 5 string banjo!
Banjos are good, too. Perhaps a bit better at making you happy, but they lack the ability to mourn with you.

Still catching up from too much holidaying.
R: 24, W: 2, costing 1200
Coryat: 18,400
FJ: literature-related, so do I have to say it?
LT: (Levites)
I guess 10+ years of leading a Bible study pays off from time to time in J!, although I did miss the first clue in the OT Transportation category. I'm a bit surprised that Levites as the priestly tribe of Israel isn't more widely known. They've got a whole book of the Bible named after them: Leviticus.
This fool guessed Browning for the FJ! clue. I consider it a win to actually name a British female author, even if I'm off by a century and she was more a poet than a novelist.

Did pretty well on this one...
35R, 0W
Coryat = 27,600
FJ: Nope.
LT: Brews, Tanzania, Appendicitis (on the DD, if that counts)
Swept symptons and food in the J round, not so good outside of those categories.

FJ - Pre-called Henry Miller, then got to Virginia Woolf before Alex finished reading the clue. The death date gave me pause, but Woolf seemed like the best guess: To The Lighthouse, Mrs. Dalloway and, what else, Orlando? (BTW, Doris Lessing got the Nobel in 2007, so Olev's guess was way off but better than nothing)

You forgot about "A Room of One's Own".

You forgot that "A Room of One's Own" isn't a novel. The third book on the list, as mentioned elsewhere in this thread, is "The Waves."LucarioSnooperVixey wrote: ↑Fri Jan 05, 2018 11:54 am
