Re: Monday, January 8, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]
There was some audible clicky buzzer stuff going on the first segment that thankfully disappeared after the break.
Dave was wearing a different outfit in the game than what was shown on the J! page. I got fooled into thinking he was going to win.
Two clues remained hidden in the J! round, but the DJ! round being completed was an improvement from last week.
The weekly poll will have Dave’s incorrect response and I’ll be checking it. All I can do is shake my head as I had the right logic to consider the correct response and I allowed myself to still take the bait to go the wrong way. What slowed down my thinking was also having Clinton in the mix in that MO is a state away from AR.
Taking time to think whether the Clintons were still in D.C. when W. took over wasted time.
Congrats to Brandon for finally putting the brakes on the merry-go-round that had been on an extended ride of non-repeating champs.

Here's another one who answered FJ the same as Dave. As a kid, I was dragged down to to witness a certain someone's helicopter touching down that evening. And my mom still serves in the docent guild of

R: 24, W: 4, costing 4400
Coryat: 11800
FJ:
LT: heresy, (in effigy), Hello, Dolly!, squeaky door, (elephant)
Had to slow down just a bit on the Hello, Dolly response since "It Only Takes A Moment" is recycled in Wall-E, which was an important movie for my son when it came out.
My immediate reaction to FJ was the right one, then I had to spend a bunch of time convincing myself that the current President attends the inauguration of his successor. To become an ex-President while flying would have to be an unusual event, like, say, a resignation. It helps that the event happened during my formative years, so I remember the whole resignation quite distinctly. I even remember that the plane itself changed call signs during the flight, from Air Force One to SAM 26000 (or maybe 27000 - I don't recall which aircraft was used for that particular flight).
It was good to finally see both a board cleared and a repeat champion. I will say that this string of one day champs is a good reminder of how tenuous that champ status can be. A couple of bad categories and a strong opponent or two and it's gone.
FJ wagering was unusual today. Dave's standard wager would be 7401. Brandon could wager 6199 to stay above Dave if they both missed and to stay ahead of Jamie if they both were right. Jamie risked falling below 2400 - the standard amount Dave would have if wrong. So by my cipherin', all three wagers were too big.

For some reason, half of my channels aren't showing closed captioning. I think Spectrum has the hiccups.
"Heresy" was also extremely tough for $200. Can we poll that?
I didn't have a single bit of recognition in the Musicals category. Evita was a musical?!
England had a civil war?!? How was I supposed to figure that one out?!
"Pointed weapon" was massive negbait for sword. After it was negged, I had no idea what to guess.
Lach trash: squeaky door
No guess on FJ! The wording to me suggested a plane crash, and I'm pretty sure no presidents to date have died in one. Missouri led me nowhere, since I couldn't recall if any presidents were from Missouri.

Re: Monday, January 8, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]
Instaget FJ, then immediately doubted myself, wondering if Missouri was the bigger hint,
Jamie could've won had she slowed down and thought her DD answers through. In absentia -> not there to be burned -> effigy. Ivory -> elephant. I hate to quibble with the wagers of someone who missed 2/3 DDs anyway, but that 600 bet at the end of the J! round was awful, and betting 1000 on a DD in the 800 box while down 7k wasn't much better.
Switching to the wrong answer would've annoyed me for weeks.Peter the accountant wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2018 7:23 pmthen I had to spend a bunch of time convincing myself that the current President attends the inauguration of his successor. Instaget FJ. My only niggling doubt was due to my ignorance of how the power of an acting president is returned to the president once he is able to resume his duties (thinking specifically of when Reagan underwent colon surgery and GHW Bush ascended, and then Reagan resumed later that same day).
Re: Monday, January 8, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]
Instaget on FJ, but then I started pondering who else could the clue possibly be referencing. Only thing I could think of was the macabre, JFK becoming an ex-president while LBJ took the Oath of Office on Air Force One...
Re: Monday, January 8, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]
First thought for final was: "Nixon" (since outgoing presidents ceremonially leave after the inauguration and he departed under decidedly different circumstances). Second thought: "this clue is massive negbait for Truman" and I wouldn't have been surprised if all three contestants went with him.
I would prefer not to.

No it really wasn't.
Never been on J!, but once won a knockoff version that aired on local access TV.
Re: Monday, January 8, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]
I was thrown off by the wording, immediately thinking "heretical" thought but wasn't able to backtrack to "heresy" for the required six-letter word in time.
I would prefer not to.

That clue couldn't have been any more obvious if it were asking who took office on board Air Force One.Bartleby wrote: Second thought: "this clue is massive negbait for Truman" and I wouldn't have been surprised if all three contestants went with him.
I wouldn't even qualify it as neg-bait, as you don't put limburger cheese in a mouse trap.

Disappointed that the contestants ran away from Spanish Inquisition and left it unfinished.
Pointed weapon + Africa = spear, every time.
6600 trash: How to fix a squeaky door, Windows 2.0, heresy (easy peasy), in effigy DD (WECIB), zeroth (another WECIB), Hungary, elephant DD (Ivory Coast, c'mon!). Got FJ by the same reasoning as Peter the Accountant.

Re: Monday, January 8, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]
The thing about this FJ is that I'm not sure if it is technically correct. Yes, the plane Nixon was on became a different designation at the moment Ford took the oath of office, based on the pilot's recollection (as noted at thejeopardyfan.com), but my understanding is that Ford really became the president and Nixon became an ex-president the moment Nixon's letter of resignation was accepted by Kissinger. The timing of the oath of office should be immaterial.
This logic also follows from the idea that a new president becomes official at noon on Jan 20th, regardless of the actual timing of the oath of office. This was discussed a good deal when President Obama's first oath was somewhat mangled by the justice giving it. Obama was president in any case, although his non-fans wanted to believe otherwise.
