Gilbert mentioned that his kids get a 1% cut of his winnings. That chunk of change is growing by the day. I would have made $2 if I had that deal in place when my dad was on Name That Tune.

Alex was 0/2 on his Daily Doubles while a solve on either one may have been enough to win the game. If he keeps watching the game over the years he will have multiple opportunities for redemption on the King Tut guy or scholarship guy.

Gilbert’s DD miss was very strange as he got the tougher of the two names with the 18th c. guy but could not pull the 20th c. guy with the well-known title staring right at him.

The FJ! clue was the kind that is guess time for me. I looked at a Marktiple Choice of the top 3 countries in population (so at least I know something) and went the wrong way on a Dawson Crossin’. It’s a miss today while just as easily I could have gone the right way at a different time.

Gilbert would need a huge win on Monday to knock Kyle Becker off the top of the TOC Tracker.

Alex was not wearing the red tie outfit he had on for yesterday’s post FJ! round disclaimer so the timeline is still open for when he taped that remark.

I've been reading quite a bit about African countries recently. What lucky timing.

Love when we get an "accidentally topical" FJ category.

I knew Nigeria was #1 and Egypt was not far behind, but I was trying to think of what other country could be #2. Ethiopia, South Africa, and the DRC all came to mind. I didn't think Libya had a high enough population to be #3 so I settled on Egypt as my answer.

Pretty much the same here. Nigeria #1. I would have thought South Africa #2 (was surprised when Trebek said it was Ethiopia). And if #3 is 90% desert, it's probably a north African country, and Egypt is the obvious answer there. (The Nile River provides enough water for a lot of population, even in the desert. Other countries in north Africa might have a coastal area or something, but probably not as fertile an area or as much population in their non-desert parts.)

I wandered the desert for a bit but landed in the right spot.

For the DD I said “Steinbeck and some other guy”.

I would have missed the FJ clue if not for the LL question this past season on Ethiopia. I had thought that Egypt was Africa's second most populous country, but in all the buzz around that question I learned that Ethiopia was actually #2.

I still think that is kind of a vague and trivial FJ clue, though.

Eh, 90% desert should have done it. This is probably some country that borders the Sahara. (Not that there aren't any other deserts in Africa--the Kalahari, for example--but most aren't big enough to take up most of the country.) Ethiopia has a much more diverse geography and isn't 90% desert. Lots of mountains and hills, and the Rift Valley runs out of there. (I was not aware that Ethiopia was the second most-populous African country, though. I would have pegged South Africa.)

After today's news, I'm looking forward to seeing "Actresses" as an FJ on Monday.

I wonder if he had the same fail that I did? I thought they wanted two people responsible for "To a Mouse".

====

Most of my stuff is being relegated to my poll.

How did "Carnation" fit the "Gold & Silver" category? There was nothing silver or gold in that at all.

Any reason why "asteroid belt" does NOT BMS to Kuiper Belt? All the things they do BMS, and not that?

I work in a church and I didn't get January 6 = Epiphany right either. For some reason I thought it was the 5th.

Totally bombed 11 Letters. I had a couple of them, but "astigmatism" didn't feel like 11 letters to me.

Not too disappointed that we didn't finish One Hit Wonders because The Waitresses already ensured I wouldn't have run it anyway.

I had no idea where to go on FJ! 90 million felt way too big to be ANY African country.

trash: wolf, January 6, Burns & Steinbeck DD, Stutz, Waitresses.
answered Lord Carnarvon for Howard Carter DD, diamondback for rattlesnake.
FJ: Africa + populous + 90% desert = Egypt. Knew Nigeria was 1st, still surprised that Ethiopia was 2nd, even after losing Eritrea.
