TPH's "Did you get this?" poll (potential weekly spoilers)

Post by TenPoundHammer »

So, in order to stop hogging Mark's poll, I decided I would start my own poll of what I consider undervalued/obscure/interesting clues throughout the week. Most of the time they may be my usual "that seemed tough for the top box", but I'm willing to put other curiosities in it (for instance, clues about things I'm personally interested in. If this works, I plan to do one every week.

My choices
1/8/18: The Spanish Inquisition $200: The Inquisition was formed in Spain to combat this 6-letter type of thought at odds with orthodox doctrine

1/9/18: Musical Guest Performers $400: Despite rumors of a feud, Eminem joined Drake onstage when Drake's tour hit this city

1/10/18: Double Talk $400: This resort town has one of the oldest casinos in Germany, but it's better known for its hot springs

1/11/18: Just Not That Into You $200: You turned your nose up at this sport that gives Calder and Lady Byng trophies, so thanks, but no thanks.

1/11/18: Mycology & Mythology $400: Psychedelic mushrooms may have been used by the cult of Demeter & this abducted daughter.

1/12/18: So You've Been Indicted $200: We swear suborning this -- getting a witness to lie on the stand in court -- is also a felony as the indictment says.

Bonus: 1/8/18: National Coats of Arms $400: "South Africa's coat of arms has a club called a knobkierie & this pointed weapon, shown peacefully lying down" -- I negged with "sword".

The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.

Not only did I not get the Calder and Lady Byng trophies clue, I didn't remember the correct response when I saw it again just now. I'm not 100% sure I'd have rung in on the Eminem clue, but I did guess correctly so I'm counting it.

Checked everything (answered the six correctly and said sword).

Clam X 7.
Could not submit a null ballot; you might need to add a box of shame, or just label it "for tfb". I did know (and probably would have got 2 of 3) heresy, sword, and perjury on reveal but the game is too fast for me with my half attention span. I'll never get a mythological clue.

Got 'em all except Persephone. I find mythology boring as a rule and just can't bring myself to study it.

Clammed on hockey, and said "testimony" only to realize a moment too late what the correct answer was. Baden-Baden was an "oh, of course" moment.
Had spear.
Oh, what has science wrought? I sought only to turn a man into a metal-encased juggernaut of destruction powered by the unknown properties of a mysterious living crystal. How could this have all gone wrong?

5 right, missed Persephone (still too weak in mythology), said spear, so I think that's the right lineup of smilies.

I wouldn't expect most non-hockey fans to have heard of the Calder Trophy (NHL rookie of the year). The Lady Byng Trophy for "sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct" sounds absurd enough for people to remember ;)

Felt bad about missing Baden-Baden, since it's the site of some legendary chess tournaments in the early 20th century I'm very aware of, and I remember reading about it being a resort town with casinos and hot springs.

I'd have been run out of town had I gotten the Eminem clue wrong. The "mile roads" start a couple of miles north of where I live with 5 Mile Road--three south of 8 Mile, which Eminem made famous.

Got the spear question as well.

Likely would have gotten to heresy eventually, but not in the first couple of seconds.

I missed that one. When the answer was read, I came up with it, but then started thinking there was a concentration camp there and decided that wouldn't be a tourist destination.

No clue on the city and guessed Helen of Troy for the kidnapped daughter. I also negged with sword. Looking back, that was a bad miss, as spears are a weapon I associate with African warriors. Swords are more of a pirate thing, at least in my mind.

Exactly the reason I went with spear instantly -- as soon as I saw "South Africa" and "weapon" the image of an African warrior ready for battle with shield and spear popped into my mind.

Something like this:

I'm not the defending Jeopardy! champion. But I have played one on TV.

I guessed that the answer for your bonus question was spear.
