Believe it or not, both ways. I think the accent on the first syllable is more common, however. This Is Kirk! wrote: ↑Thu Jan 18, 2018 10:55 amOut of curiosity, how do people at CMU pronounce Carnegie?

My friend who's a transplant from New York, home of CARNagee Hall, is annoyed that we Clevelanders call the street that intersects East 9th "carNEGee," since the man's name was Andrew CARNagee. But with a little googling, I discovered Alex/Cleveland's pronunciation is the Scottish version and how the man himself said his name. Emphasis on the first syllable is an Americanization apparently.
(And I sent my friend a clip of AT saying it, just to annoy him. )

Now that we've got the Carnegie thing settled, is it an en-dive or an on-deeve?

I definitely heard it both ways, but CAR-ne-gie is quicker and easier than car-NAY-gie, so I'd say it worked out to a 90/10 split. This Is Kirk! wrote: ↑Thu Jan 18, 2018 10:55 amOut of curiosity, how do people at CMU pronounce Carnegie?

I saw the Scottish first minister speak a few years ago (even got to talk to him!) and he pronounced it "carKNEEGee".bbird wrote: ↑Thu Jan 18, 2018 11:24 am My friend who's a transplant from New York, home of CARNagee Hall, is annoyed that we Clevelanders call the street that intersects East 9th "carNEGee," since the man's name was Andrew CARNagee. R: 26, W: 3, costing 5200
Coryat: 14,000
FJ:
DD: 1/3
LT: Mellon, Reaper, schwa
Too much math in high school and college led to an instaget on isosceles. Equal lengths, starts with "is" pronounced "ice": has to be the well-known triangle. I'm not sure if Gilbert was trying to throw his opponents off with his pronunciation ("is" instead of "ice") or just didn't recall the way Alex pronounced the category in the opening. I kind of lean towards the latter based on his struggle with the DD and slightly slower responses.
Reaper and Mellon were lucky educated guesses. Hilton was an unlucky one on the last clue. (I was sure that Hilton was associated - as in bought out - another hotel chain that didn't bear the family name. If so, it apparently wasn't Hyatt.)
FJ was an instaget for me. It's been "Veterans" my whole life, but somewhere it's previous incarnation has been beat into my memory. As has Decoration/Memorial day. My TOM for that pair is that you go decorate military graves on Memorial day.
Lee was a beast today, running Presidents (and one other?) and generally being fast on the buzzer and right when answering. Very little hesitation on most of his responses. Not that I'm any decent measure, but his speed certainly threw me off when playing along. I found myself thinking about the last clue several times instead of letting it go and moving on. If he can keep it up, he should have a good run.

Wow, that's a clue that had me digging really deep into my memory banks. Can't remember the last time I heard the term "Armistice Day". (Full disclosure, I was born in 1965, well after the name had changed.)

Who says we have to pronounce eponymous objects the same way as their namesake? No one calls the world’s highest mountain EVE-rest, but they all called the surveyor that.bbird wrote: ↑Thu Jan 18, 2018 11:24 am My friend who's a transplant from New York, home of CARNagee Hall, is annoyed that we Clevelanders call the street that intersects East 9th "carNEGee," since the man's name was Andrew CARNagee. And of course Elbridge Gerry (pronounced "Gary") vs. gerrymandering.dhkendall wrote: ↑Sat Jan 20, 2018 12:49 amWho says we have to pronounce eponymous objects the same way as their namesake? I'm not arguing for changing the pronunciation of Carnegie Hall, just defending Cleveland's pronunciation of their street. And now, Andrew's own name, I guess.

no, I didn't like it either. SPECIAL DAYS made me think it would be some sort of religious observance. Why they couldn't use plain old HOLIDAYS and OBSERVANCES I don't know.

Armistice Day isn't a holiday or observance anymore (in the US).
The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.

??? Veteran's Day is a Federal Holiday. Are you confusing with Armed Forces Day (in April I think?). Or is the point that it is not one under that name so the category shouldn't be named accordingly
