For capo di tutti capi, I got stuck in translation goo and spat out " head of all heads" - assume they would have taken that
I said "chief of all chiefs". Can I count that?
I cycled through every possible translation except boss, chief included. They'd have to accept any reasonable translation
Thanks!

Do you really need to label the state names? Maybe make it a tad harder?
That was my thought as well. It was virtually a STUPID ANSWERS clue.

And I was baffled that Elizabeth knew enough about Gilbert and Sullivan to guess H.M.S. Pinafore, but couldn't name the show with "buccaneers." I suspect she would have gotten it from the living room. This is a good example of how, on a DD, you need to slow yourself down and find the TOM.
I'm not sure about Elizabeth's knowledge of G&S - her body language said that she knew Pinafore but that's it so she went with it. Buccaneers = pirates seems like a dead giveaway, and the police play a significant role in Penzance so even some passing knowledge should have pointed to it - unless, as you suggest, she did just drew a blank.

These days, I'm surprised anyone would know either of those shows since they don't seem to be produced often and it's been 35 years since the somewhat dreadful movie version of Penzance with Kevin Kline, Linda Ronstadt and Rex Smith.

My mother's love of the awful movie version made this an instaget for me. I assumed growing up that Penzance was MUCH more popular than it really was.

As a past board member of two opera companies devoted exclusively to the works of Gilbert and Sullivan, I feel it my duty to report that this material is thriving in the Chicago area. For more info, drop me a line.

Speaking of which, I will submit a poll request for "I've never even heard of Ore-Ida". Thanks ahead of time, Mark.
There are two of you already in this thread and I'm shocked by that. On the other hand based on the 1/15 poll 11% have never eaten a Triscuit and I wouldn't have ever guessed that either!

Ore-Ida has got to be far and away the best selling frozen potato brand in the U.S.
Yeah, I can't see polling this just to see that 98% of the people have heard of Ore-Ida. It's almost TPHish.
I think there is a likely a small, but significant demographic of people who don't cook and therefore don't shop. Not amongst J! groupies, but many older males and raised-on-fast-food young people (which one is Morbeedo  ) would not encounter this in the wild. I don't recall any national advertising campaigns, but I would tune them out anyway.

More curious to me is who knew it was derived from the two states? I just assumed it was some Norwegian dude's name, or some other shithole country immigrant's. Every FJ! clue tends to have some new fun fact in it, even the instagets.

Something like that. I think it was more like "Ore-Ida? All right-a!"

I recently read (I think in I, Gangster but perhaps it was in Hoodlums: New York or maybe Treasury Agent: The Inside Story though that seems particularly unlikely) an alternative story about Luciano's "ride"; namely that he was actually picked up by some feds who believed Lucky could tell them something about an imminent large shipment of narcotics they had caught wind of. Though this was the only time I ever heard another version, it strikes me as far more plausible than enemy gangsters who had meant to kill him. How inept must they have been to have failed?

This is, btw, not to express any lack of confidence in today's FBI.

Based, I hasten to add, on a really wonderful theatrical production in Central Park and on Broadway.

One of the Chicago G&S companies has produced at least three J! champs, a Kids Week competitor, and lots of water-treaders in the contestant pool!

I've eaten plenty of their products and reset the frozen potatoes sections in grocery stores enough times to where that was an instaget. Although, just five minutes ago I had no idea how the company got its name.

A bit surprised nobody has commented on his DD wager at the end. He is up by just $200 and bets $4,000. I thought it wouldn't have been a bad idea to go all-in there and go for the lock in a fairly simple category.
Yes, it seems like a time when you either go with $5 or bet it all.
Well, he had room to save himself a few bucks so he could play FJ. But yeah, those were the two options in my mind. The $4000 wager was pretty much as bad as it could possibly be. Getting it right doesn't give him a crush against Nate. (I.e. Nate can win without getting FJ right.) But if Ryan gets FJ wrong, that DOES give Nate a crush against him. (I.e. Ryan CAN'T win without getting FJ right unless Nate overwagers.) Essentially, Ryan's wager was all downside. If he gets it right, he's no better off.
Before he bet I had to pause the dvr, they almost always overbet in that situation and I went into Trebekian prayer mode.

I associate pornstaches equally with the 70s and 80s.

"Hand-held game" misled me to video games and not even the "Rubiks" neg pushed my brain in the right direction.

"...like James K. Polk" was a very bad TOM for "Dark Horse". I couldn't figure out what they meant even though I know "Dark Horse" is a Katy Perry song.

Saw no way to figure out "Goya" in the top box. I saw a Hispanic name and negged with Picasso.

Last time we had a food FJ!, I got bit in the ass by failing to pull up a food I eat all the time. This time, I just had no idea whatsoever, meaning I still haven't gotten an FJ! right in 2018.

I could see an alternate universe version of myself guessing Picasso too, but for the mention of the Inquisition, which indicates a pre–20th century time frame (although still surprisingly recent for those who associate the Inquisition with the Middle Ages and know Goya came well after that). As it was, though, I knew the "Naked Maja" painting was Goya.

The emphasis is U.S. I don't recall ever seeing any commercials or mentions in any American media that I recall. There are lots of fast food chains, retail stores etc. that aren't in Canada but at least I've heard of them. After Jeopardy, I googled it in association with Canada and it got me
nowhere.

I HAVE heard of Ore-Ida, but it just didn't surface in 30 seconds. If it had, I don't think I'd have noticed the origin of Ore and Ida in the name.

WHY do I blank on things so often?!
