Alex: John Giambrone is from New York. He's an investment banking analyst. And after graduating from Yale, you decided to abroad...

John: Yep.

Alex: And travel for a while. Where did you go and for how long?

John: I was away for about four months out of the six after graduating, so I went to Ireland, Greece, Spain, Portugal, New Zealand, Australia, Scotland.

Alex: That's wonderful. Terrific. Okay.

Alex: Marcy Lehman from Marion, Iowa. You and your mother have a bit of a contretemps over how to spell your name?

Marcy: Yes. My full name is longer, but when we shorten my name, my mother spells it one way, and when I learned cursive in the first or second grade, I liked the way it looked with a "Y" better. My mom, to this day, still insists on spelling it with an "I".

Alex: All right. I hope you guys will solve your--

Marcy: I'm pretty sure on national television, it's good now.

Alex: Okay.

Alex: Sean Udicious is our champion. Within 24 hours of finding out that you were gonna be on our program, you discovered that you had become...

Sean: An uncle, which was very exciting. Soon after I got the phone call saying that I'd be coming out, I got another phone call from my brother-in-law saying that the baby was gonna be coming. And she came, and it was literally the best 24 hours of my life.

VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Four-fifths for first place. Shore's Conjecture.
John: Wager $9,701 to cover Marcy. If you feel like using Shoretegy, try wagering $2,501.
Marcy: Your score is within 4/5ths of John's, so wager between $201 (venusian) and $2,599 (martian), beating John's maximum safe bet of the difference between your scores while still covering against a doubled score on Sean's part.
Sean: There's no way you can cover a rational wager by Marcy, but if Marcy decides for some reason to wager everything, you can eke out a win on a Triple Stumper if you wager no more than $3,400.

FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
They're the 3 colors of New York City's flag & of the Knicks & Mets teams; 2 are on the Dutch flag & 1 used to be

SHARK TANK used Robert, Kevin, Lori and Daymond with Mark mentioned in the J!6. I guess that leaves Barbara unseen in the $200 clue that was not played and a case of a video category not completed. STATEN ISLAND had a couple of Clue Crew clues, so this was bound to not be a 61-clue game.

Sean received the benefit of the doubt on his responses for the National Zoo doctor and list of recordings while there was no saving him on calling the actor famous for playing Harold Hill, Prince. It was an easy rebound for Marcy from Iowa. That same category, THE HAROLD wanted the composer of “Over the Rainbow” & “Stormy Weather” and I called the triple stumper as I picked up the trash.

Alex set up John for the win with his remarks to open the DJ! Round: It looks like a tough road for (at minus 2000) John.

The FJ! clue gave me a way to work around my West Coast deficiency for things NY/NYC and colors on flags by offering a sports path. Mets & Knicks? Yes, I’ve seen their uniforms more than once. For the Dutch flag portion I pictured the team in the World Cup (Well, when they qualify – Zing!) and everything checked out to have the right three colors.

If the FJ! clue had shown the NYC flag and asked me to identify it that would have greatly increased the difficulty while it’s possible I could have got lucky on it.

John did not have a great opening to his game while closing with 3/3 on the big clues is what matters.

41 R/3 W
DD: 3/3
FJ:
LT: Jonathan Swift (DD), Social Security Act, Cleveland Plain Dealer, Arctic Ocean

Great comeback by John. That Washington Pot category really seemed to wake him up and give him confidence. Good run, Sean. Hope you'll stick around.

Pretty elementary FJ! for us sports fans.

When Sean misses FJ, he wins. When he gets FJ, he loses. Odd correlation.

I got orange from the Dutch, blue from the Mets, and picked white as a neutral color to fill them out. (Most sports teams have a pale/neutral color for the home or away jerseys, depending on the sport.)

The particular shows for a week are randomized by Standards and Practices (an independent third party) on the morning of the tape day, without regard to what contestants appear on which particular show.

I knew orange and blue but put red for the third color for some reason.

Sean should have been negged for however he pronounced veternarian.

Marcy should have headed to the bottom of the sun category with time running out, She only got to three clues and was still $100 out of first.

I didn't see whatever was posted, but thanks to the boss for cleaning it up.

Coryat: $30,000

DD: 3/3

FJ:

Tricky on the vocab category: It would be easy to say "order" for Sagan's description of the opposite of chaos ("Cosmos" seems almost too obvious), and "medicine," Marcy's response for a word meaning a cure from the latin "medeor," is entirely understandable.

Good game and a nice comeback by John.

The mods are a pretty mellow bunch so I can't imagine what was said to earn an instant month ban...yikes.

I need to hear a clip of him saying 'veterinarian' because that seemed pretty damn generous.
Bamaman wrote: Wed Feb 07, 2018 6:23 pm Marcy should have headed to the bottom of the sun category with time running out, She only got to three clues and was still $100 out of first.
I spent the entire last minute of that round screaming at the TV. When she came up $100 short of the lead I just shook my head. I also wnted to see some larger DD wagers, so this wasn't a banner day for me

Instaget FJ...but this is the part where I admit that while I'm sure I've seen NYC's flag literally thousands of times on buildings, in news stories, etc., I could not have told you its colors. The Knicks and the inferior baseball team's colors? Easy money. The poll question practically writes itself ("The teams colors were more helpful..."). I wonder if dhk's knowledge of flags extends to cities...

...OK not really. Would the team colors have been helpful to you at all?

Wow, so much TOM in that FJ and I could still do no better than a wild guess. Had blue and then re-reread the clue to confirm that I needed all three colors and threw in the towel.

Fascinating FJ in that there were so many potential paths to the answer (Dutch flag, New York flag, Knicks, Mets). I took the Knicks path myself.

Odd that the “coverts” (instead of “converts”) typo slipped through; I can’t remember the last time I saw a misspelling in a clue.

Also, I would assume that they were more lenient on pronunciation considering the “actuarially” struggles from Monday.
