CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS
Alex: Erin Matherne is from Florida. And this young lady has been into thoroughbred horse racing for a long time. In America, if you had to pick one horse that typifies the very best of this sport, which horse would it be?
Erin: You cannot choose anything other than Secretariat. That horse cannot be denied.
Alex: And then long after his death, when they did the autopsy, they found out the reason why.
Erin: Right.
Alex: His heart--
Erin: Enlarged heart.
Alex: The enlarged heart, yeah.
Erin: Absolutely.
Alex: He was a winner, though.
Alex: Rob Worman, from Edina, Minnesota. You like to play tennis with your mother-in-law.
Rob: I do, weather permitting.
Alex: And you do this every morning, weather permitting?
Rob: Weather permitting, every morning, I'm up at 5:30. We meet at the court by about 6:30, and we play at least an hour of tennis before I have to hurry off to work. And she's 72, and I haven't won yet.
[Laughter]
Alex: She's tough, huh?
Rob: Very.
Alex: Okay.
Alex: Frank Lang--
Frank: Yes.
Alex: --is our champion. This young man used to be a paid comedian.
Frank: Yes.
Alex: Performing where?
Frank: Locally, back in Phoenix. I did a little bit stand-up in high school, because my parents said, "If you're gonna be so funny, go earn some money doing it." So I tried. And then I also got into improv comedy. There's a local improv company there. We did shows, public shows, private shows, corporate events, impersonations, atmosphere of characters--just anything for money to make people laugh.
Alex: And you obviously accumulated a fair amount of knowledge along the way, because you won handsomely yesterday.
Frank: Yeah.

(Alex: Erin?)

(Rob: Who is...)
PRIZE $400: Tim Berners-Lee is a winner of the Draper Prize from the NAE, the National Academy of this
(Rob: What is electronics?)
PRIZE $600: He's seen here around the time he won the 1981 Booker Prize for "Midnight's Children"
PRIZE $1000: In 2016 this annual prize went to Alejandro Aravena, a Chilean architect known for innovative, low-cost housing

Re: Wednesday, February 14, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]
That was a loud and enthusiastic studio audience today.
Alex wore the outfit today that he had on for the explanation tacked on to the end of Gilbert Collins’s game 2. Nothing like extra busywork to do before being able to eat lunch.
The FJ! clue was friendly as the category had me wishing for the prior decade. Fortunately, the song was everywhere enough to have reached my radar.
And Rob’s:
It is always nice to see someone follow the path of J!Board member, online test, audition, call, taping, and icing on the cake champ status. Congrats.
On the other hand, 8 clues not seen and a 17,400 combined Coryat? As Billy Joel sings, “What else do I have to say?”

Re: Wednesday, February 14, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]
I had to rely on the Reddit guy when the networks went into full coverage of the sad events in Florida.
I wasn’t too happy to see that FJ category as I haven’t listened to current music since the 80s. But after a bit of thought, I recalled the craze from back in the day.
Kind of a bleah game as nobody seemed to get into a rhythm.

Good win, Rob! Retro-luck for tomorrow!
That Rabbit, Run clue was really dodgy. At game speed, it wasn't clear at all that "runs" was the last word of the novel's text rather than its title. Regardless, I listened to Rob's response several times and never once heard an "s" on the end of his response. What was the deal there, Rob?
What was up with the Think Fast category? The name and the $200 clue seemed like it would be clues that one could suss out with a few seconds to think but would be difficult to come up with on the fly. The rest of the category, though, seemed to basically be Potpourri/Hodgepodge. Was there any reason we should know that Janus is the god of doorways? I got it, but it was the WAGgiest of WAGs.
Hit Songs of the '90s (or '80s) has to be my dream FJ! category. It would be really hard for me to not Clavin that one.

Sprinkles are for winners.

Oh I was blatantly wrong at the time - I knew the title of that book, but was thrown off by the clue wording in precisely the way you describe!BigDaddyMatty wrote: ↑Wed Feb 14, 2018 4:51 pm Coryat: $31,400

Alex actually initially ruled me correct. We ended up re-recording that bit.

I don't know if you should know it or not, but it's notable that the temple of Janus in Rome has its doors closed in the time of peace, and open in times of war. (Which is probably related to the fact that he is the god of doorways. I don't know which came first--the doors because of his domain, or his domain, in an association with the doors.)BigDaddyMatty wrote: ↑Wed Feb 14, 2018 4:51 pm Was there any reason we should know that Janus is the god of doorways? Take away "door" from the search term and there are more hits. J! uses lots of the gods over and over again.

A first for me: my pre-clue blind guess being the correct response.
Congrats on the performance! Looked like you and the whole panel were enjoying the experience.RobW wrote: ↑Wed Feb 14, 2018 4:55 pmI am also (indirectly) responsible for that.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Wed Feb 14, 2018 4:27 pm That was a loud and enthusiastic studio audience today.

I always remember him as the two-faced god; I didn't know the bit about doors at the time, so I missed that FJ (have I mentioned that missed FJs still bother me years after the fact?). Never missing a Janus clue again.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Wed Feb 14, 2018 6:33 pmI consider this a good reason: http://www.j-archive.com/search.php?sea ... mit=SearchBigDaddyMatty wrote: ↑Wed Feb 14, 2018 4:51 pm Was there any reason we should know that Janus is the god of doorways? When they're down big, they head for the top of the category. Protecting a lock with LTaM? Straight for the 2k clues. I don't know why this amuses me.
WTF did Frank say for that Milwaukee clue?
"90s music? !@#($. If it isn't the Macarena, I'm screwed" - me, after the category reveal.
"HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA" - me, when I saw the clue. That auditory abomination was finally good for something.
Congrats Rob!!!

I thought it was cool that Frank also got a loud reaction when he doubled up, too.RobW wrote: ↑Wed Feb 14, 2018 4:55 pmMarkBarrett wrote: ↑Wed Feb 14, 2018 4:27 pm That was a loud and enthusiastic studio audience today.

Looking around, there are various geographic features in the state with the "ee" ending, also.

I would not have guessed that the author of Midnight's Children and the Pritzker Prize would be triple stumpers.
I got FJ off the category.

Add Menomonee Falls (suburb of Milwaukee) and Menominee County for synonyms. Could be any of those.Saturnalia wrote: ↑Wed Feb 14, 2018 7:50 pmhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Menomonie,_Wisconsin

ETA: Wonder if there was confusion with Menominee, Michigan in there too. And yes, Saturnalia, there are lots of "EE" geographical names in this state. Kind of crazy once you see it.
