CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS
Alex: Laura McLean loves to travel, and Laura, I need your help. My wife and I have been planning a rail trip through Scotland. You did that.
Laura: Yes, we did.
Alex: Was it good? Was it fun? What were the highlights?
Laura: It was--it was one of the most amazing things we've ever done. We traveled by train from Glasgow to Oban, and then we took a ferry over to the Isle of Mull. And we took a trip to the Castle Duart, which is the seat of the clan McLean, so I got to see my ancestral home there.
Alex: Great. All right.
Alex: Garan Geist is from Chicago. For his honeymoon, he traveled to a special place also, but I have been there. That's no longer on my bucket list. Tell the folks.
Garan: Yeah, I convinced my wife Brittany, who has no backpacking experience, to go on a trek through the Himalayas in Nepal.
Alex: Where, exactly?
Garan: The Annapurna circuit. It's about 2 weeks. You get up to about 18,000 feet.
Alex: That must have been exciting.
Garan: It was beautiful.
Alex: All right, good for you.
Alex: Maryann Penzvalto from Cleveland is living her childhood dream. We keep introducing her as a librarian. You always wanted to be a librarian?
Maryann: That's correct.
Alex: Why?
Maryann: I don't know why. I never thought about another career. It felt like it was called to be. And I majored in English, because it was the closest I could find to pre-library science. I've worked in libraries as long as I could, and I love it so much. It is the best job.
Alex: It's not--wait a minute. You love it that much, it's not a job.
Maryann: That is absolutely true.
Alex: It's just fun.
Maryann: I miss it when I'm away.
Alex: Okay, great.
JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Maryann found the Daily Double on the 27th clue. Maryann had $1,200, Garan had $2,200, and Laura was at $5,400. Maryann wagered $1,000.
RACKET BUSTERS $600: As a U.S. attorney in this state, Patrick Fitzgerald helped convict ex-governor George Ryan of racketeering
(Alex: Maryann?)
(Maryann: What is Massachusetts?)
...
[The end-of-round signal sounds.]
TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
MARCH MADNESS CHAMPS $800: In the 2012 final Anthony Davis & this team went wild on defense with a record 11 blocks
4 OF THE SAME VOWEL, ONE WORD $600: A boat with twin hulls in parallel
(Garan: What is a pontoon?)
TOP SEEDS $1000: Just place the seeds of this flower on top of your soil & they'll be sprouting in no time
SOME SERIOUS FOREIGN COIN $1000: This one-ounce gold coin of South Africa was introduced in 1967
(Garan: What is a rand?)
...
(Alex: Less than a minute now.)
RACKET BUSTERS $800: Before he ran for president, this man worked to curb organized crime & prosecuted several powerful mobsters
(Alex: His name is [*]. Ran against Truman.)

Re: Wednesday, February 28, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]
The game was a 4th podium special with plenty of trash available. I thought the most predictable one was the photo of the racket-busting guy who ran for president. It’s not like his mug was on the famous mistake paper headline. My reaction as I added the $800 to my score was a sarcastic, “Yeah, right.”
For the big clues I went 4/4 with 2 of them very fortunate pulls. On DD1 I did not recognize the man’s name. I guessed the right state only by picking the one I knew had such problems on more than one occasion.
The FJ! category me dreading a Medea/Circe coin flip as I knew whatever I had learned a few years back after this game: http://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=4816
was going to be a jumbled mess today.
The FJ! clue looked like a miss as I had nothing and was only as far as knowing not to write Pandora. With time remaining I worked off the word “birth” and not taking Greek into account thought “natal.” Nothing. My next path on a birth brainstorm was ob/gyn and by some miracle I was able to turn gynecologist into the correct response with just enough time to scribble it to have something.
When Maryann’s response was shown to be correct I was quite surprised and happy. I felt like a fool when Alex gave the easier path to the solve with “anti”. Of course! I should have been on that for “against.”
Nice solve by the players to make it 66% as it may not go that high on the weekly poll. Laura may get a confidence boost with a game in hand and the honor of playing from the champ’s position.

FJ: but not confident as I couldn't figure out the connection to childbirth.
Kicking myself for going for Fort Bridger and not thinking of Fort Laramie.

Re: Wednesday, February 28, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]
For FJ, I just kept repeating 'anti-' over and over until I summoned an eldr finally blurted out Anti...gone with a few seconds to spare. Whew.
Laura reminds me of someone. It was a bit distracting at first. I'm not sure who, but I'm open to suggestions.
Time for another episode of 'xxaaaxx sheepishly looks up a music category on Youtube'. Thank goodness for that Billy Ocean softball; it's a terrible song but at least it prevented the goose egg.

DD1: "Aren't half their former governors in jail?" Works for me. Poll request for DD2? I'm slightly surprised that Laura missed it, feels like there was enough there to get from signature + meadow + England + "Ru-" to Runnymede. I was too busy yelling at Garan for leaving $800 behind on that last DD to care about how easy it was. The extra 800 sure would've come in handy at the end...at least he missed FJ so he won't kick himself too hard.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Wed Feb 28, 2018 4:43 pm For the big clues I went 4/4 with 2 of them very fortunate pulls. On DD1 I did not recognize the man’s name. I guessed the right state only by picking the one I knew had such problems on more than one occasion.

I figured Athena for FJ, given her non-traditional birth. Oops. Nice performance by the new champ was interrupted by an ABC News special report on the Hope Hicks resignation. They couldn't wait 15 lousy minutes!

DD1: given racketeering, WAG to Las Vegas thence Nevada. Had New York in my back pocket. Both wrong.
FJ: No problem with the "anti" part, then kept banging off variations of partum and natal without any luck. I have heard the name Antigone but am not familiar with her place in the pantheon.

A bad miss, since I usually consider Mythology a wheelhouse category and would likely have bet a lot of money (had it been appropriate under the circumstances). I blame lack of sleep for my getting hung up on "contra" rather than "anti." At least I got Gallipoli the other day, so I have a batting average of .500 in the suddenly hot category of Greek etymologies.

Re: Wednesday, February 28, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]
contrary to the clue, and despite popular belief, "gambling" is *not* legal in new jersey.
in 1976, new jersey voters approved a referendum, which led to the new jersey legislature approving an enabling act, which authorized only certain enumerated games of chance in certain limited areas. therefore, as of 1978, casinos could only offer certain games. it was not until 1993 that the enabling act was amended, and casinos were then allowed to spread (provide) poker games. more recently, after another voter referendum, the legislature authorized sports betting (which is the subject of a major case recently submitted and argued before the supreme court).

Coryat: $38,600
48 R/1 W
DD: 3/3
FJ:
LT: Kentucky, catamaran, snapdragons, Kruger Rand, Thomas Dewey, Illinois (DD), Runnymede (DD), Billy Idol, Leona Lewis, Billy Ocean, Wounded Knee, Fort Laramie
Another Athena here. I might have gotten there had I been working with anti- rather than ant-. Along with pub trivia, this is my second consecutive night of epic failure on mythology questions. On the bright side, I went 27/27 in the J! round.
If the clue involves a governor going to prison, Illinois is always a solid guess.

If you're not a sports fan, I think Joakim Noah is tough for $600.
Quick get here with no detours to help make up for a miss last night. I read the play in high school and will have to read it again for another class very soon. I think against -> anti- helped me most... or maybe it was having it near the top of my head after having class today. Funny how it works like that.

I assume the category was Women in Mythology to steer people away from gods. It certainly helped me concentrate my thinking. At first I tried to connect contra- (Latin... ) to Cassandra, but I moved on to anti- and gyn- pretty quickly...

R: 20, W: 1, costing 600
Coryat: 16,400
FJ:
DD: 2/3
LT: Krugerrand, (Illinois)
Times:
J! 3:26 +3:02 = 6:28
DJ 6:45
FJ 1:36
My two bright spots today were running the odd numbers and going 3/5 in Broadway. Stumped in History and pop music. Only one 4 vowel word.
Got the IL DD strictly by knowing lots of their governors have gone to jail. That particular governor didn't ring any bells for me.
Got to anti- in FJ, but had no idea what to put behind it. Picked -genesis as a greek word at least related to beginnings.

Saw no reason why False for $200 was George over any other Seinfeld character.
Seven Sisters was my only miss in Odd Numbered.
I had the "Anti-" prefix, but "Antigone" is not even slightly familiar to me so I had no hope here.
Lach Trash: Billy Ocean
