Re: TD 370 - CLASSIC AREA CODES 2xx (NOW OPEN, ACTUAL PRIZE!)

Post by floridagator »

BobF -- I have not looked at your answers or anyone's answers but I suspect I should not have gone from one of the four major sports to specifying the names of leagues that I did in the follow up so I have edited the follow up and changed the names of those leagues to the names of the four major sports football basketball baseball hockey.

Anything that was a pro team in one of those sports that played its home games in Philadelphia will be acceptable.

We should have a rule that there are no clarifications in TD. Because when you change the questions after some people have already answered, those people have a reason to call foul. No wonder Morbeedo doesn't submit his answers until 3 minutes before the deadline.

This TD is yours, so you would be well within your rights to make that rule for any and all of your offerings.

Same reason I wait until the last day.

For some reason, my first attempt to submit was accepted when I was only halfway through my responses. I re-submitted with a complete form, and there shouldn’t be any discrepancies within the responses I had already given.

Tybalteon (Hamilton - large one in Ontario, but I couldn't find one in Man.)

Players did a good job of mining the 10 largest cities in the province:
1. Winnipeg 664K
2. Brandon 46K
3. Steinbach 14K
4. Portage la Prairie 13K
5. Thompson 13K
6. Winkler 11K
7. Selkirk 10K
8. Dauphin 8K
9. Morden 8K
10. Flin Flon 5K

I would also have accepted the former cities and towns merged into Winnipeg (St. Boniface, Fort Garry, etc.)

Winnipeg is the only city that I know of in Manitoba, and I knew there were likely to be many more like me, so I'm glad I dropped this one. Otherwise I would have doubled my score.

Well, gee, *now* you tell me! I would have said the one I live in! (Transcona which, when it was merged into Winnipeg in 1972, was the third largest city in Manitoba after Winnipeg and Brandon and I think just ahead of St. Boniface) I still don't think that anyone else would have guessed it.

As am I. I might have expected a couple Brandons (second largest city), Gimlis (Lord of the Rings character), or Flin Flons (for its famously funny name, named after Flintabetty Flonatin, making it one of the few places in the world to be named after a fictional character), maybe even an Emerson or two (as I think I've mentioned on the board a couple of times my sister lives there, it's a town right where Manitoba, N. Dakota, and Minnesota meet (one road that I drive on to get to her place is just a few feet from the border) - one time I went over there tobogganing down to the frozen Red River and I got a picture of myself standing on that exact spot.) But I guess people don't pay attention to everything I say here. Too bad, ignoring me cost y'all a singleton. :)

I could only think of Winnipeg, Brandon and "one with multiple words" at first.
So I gave myself time to think about it instead of submitting early like I usually do.
Ruled out Medicine Hat (correctly), stumbled into Flin Flon on a Sporcle quiz (so I didn't use that one) and then finally remembered Portage la Prairie.
I guess it counts as a small "reward" for all that time teenage me spent looking in the US/Canada atlas for places with "interesting" names. :)

I could only think of Winnipeg and the one I used, Steinbach, because there was many years back a comic store there I used to buy books from online. I had no idea if it was big or small, and frankly I don't even know where it is. It just stuck in my head from seeing it on his website so many times.

FYI, Portage, around these here parts, is pronounced PORT-idj (not port-AHJ), at least in place names like Portage la Prairie and Portage Avenue (one of the main thoroughfares in Winnipeg and where the building I work is located on. And every day I get people calling to confirm if our address is XXX port-AHJ Avenue and I die a little inside.)

Surprising it had a comic book store at all, Steinbach is the buckle of Manitoba's Bible belt and strict Mennonite country (there's a whole sub-genre of Manitoba humour just about how uprightly religious Steinbach is. It's like Salt Lake City without the culture.). I'm highly surprised they'd allow comics that aren't Bible-based.

Interesting. I wonder if it was actually a physical brick-and-mortar store or just a guy with a massive collection/online-only operation. His website basically consisted of a huge text list of every book he had, with no images, only grades. Super nice guy. Doug Sulipa's Comic World it was called. Come to think of it, I collect only Archie Comics, and he did always have tons of copies of those awful Christian Archie's made by some other company.

I was thinking someone might say Gimli because it's where they make Crown Royal (not to be confused with royal crown) and some people might know it for that.

Emerson occasionally makes it onto the news as the busiest border crossing between Vancouver and I'm not sure Port Huron? (You know, that town where Edison lived) and it was in the news recently when all those refugees were Crossing North to get out of the United States. There was also a fellow not too long ago the police found wandering around Emerson in the dead of winter trying to find his Canadian internet girlfriend who it turned out lived in Quebec. The dude wound up getting some of his digits amputated.

CLASSIC AREA CODES 2xx (204 REVEALED)

My favorite reading material to look at while I'm sitting on the can is an atlas. I play this game; If I could live anyplace in <insert State/Province>, what would be a cool town with a name that has connections to my interests? Been doing this for decades and it never gets old.

Gimli was a good answer? That's where the Gimli Glider landed! Far more interesting topic than Crown Royal (which I've heard of but don't know exactly which kind of spirit it is).

Apparently, it's never come up in J! before. Figured it would be an interesting aviation question. For those who are curious, it's an airliner that ran out of fuel due to a mixup in units between metric and imperial. When they ran out of fuel, the captain remembered an old airfield at Gimli from his days in the military. He successfully glided the aircraft to a landing there in spite of the airport having been closed some time earlier. Everyone was fine, although a few on the ground (and everyone on the plane) probably had a good scare.

Edited to add a link with a good video and description of the incident:

I had no idea if it was big or small, and frankly I don't even know where it is. It just stuck in my head from seeing it on his website so many times.
Surprising it had a comic book store at all, Steinbach is the buckle of Manitoba's Bible belt and strict Mennonite country (there's a whole sub-genre of Manitoba humour just about how uprightly religious Steinbach is. It's like Salt Lake City without the culture.). I'm highly surprised they'd allow comics that aren't Bible-based.
hey hey hey, we have Miriam Toews!! i wanted to put Pukatawagan, but thought someone may have heard of it because of its funny name. Northern Manitoba puts the god in god-forsaken.
