Clammed.
I guess it's possible I've seen one when the Blue Angels are in town and included in the show are old planes. Did not click that box though.

My brother took this picture from the October 2017 show, not I have any idea what's flying in the photo.

I remembered P-38 from an imaginary auto race commentary that Doodles Weaver did to the accompaniment of Spike Jones and His City Slickers. He does his own sound effects of the cars going by, then goes "Nyeooooww!! A P-38, how'd that get in the race?" I figured something that I knew existed would probably be correct. Oh well!

Good memories from 40-something years ago when my dad would play that Spike Jones track and act it out with stuffed animals. It was entertainment on a Saturday night before VCRs and video games.seaborgium wrote: ↑Sat Mar 10, 2018 8:12 pm I remembered P-38 from an imaginary auto race commentary that Doodles Weaver did to the accompaniment of Spike Jones and His City Slickers. I thought it was a Mustang, but I even guessed the wrong P number for that.

I confidently guessed P-41, my teenage expertise on WW2 planes obviously having gotten rusty.

My grandpa was part of the Flying Tigers in WWII, working as a mechanic/ supply driver. He was stationed in China (side note: he died way before I ever thought about moving there, but I do remember him teaching me how to count to 10 and say hello and thank you in Chinese.). I've seen one when he and my dad took me to the Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson, but that's been probably 25 years ago now.
I missed (clammed) the question, not having a clue. I feel like a bad grandson. I'll do better next time, grandpa. Sorry.

I went with P51 thinking it was the Mustang. I guess it's been a while since I've seen any WWII planes for whatever reason, and the possibility that was a P40 never crossed my mind.

If Morbeedo and AFRET don't get in, this sucker is going to be a zilch. In reflection, I remember the Flying Tigers as being a thing in the Asian theater, but there isn't a Pavlov pairing to any particular plane. Same for the silly legendary Doolittle raid - know the story, can't name the hardware. These two groups are not subtitled to their hardware quite as famously as the Tuskegee Airmen and P-51 Mustangs (subject to correction;)).
IMHO, an "alpha-numeric" important shiny airplane from WW2 only Pavlov's to P-51, B-17, and B-29 (sorry, Japan). The P-51 was the savior that could escort bombers all the way to their death from ack-ack target. The bombers, well - 12 O'Clock High and Enola Gay. The picture only serves to eliminates the Bombers. This is a tough clue full of negbait. Boardies are smart enough to CLAM because they know too much or know too little. The rest of us, bite it!
Thank you MB for adding the poll - like most Americans, I will ignore any results that don't confirm my bias!!

I went with P51. We have an annual fly in of WWII bombers near where I live, a B17, B24 and P51 sit on the runway at our local airport for a weekend. My son got to fly as a passenger in the B24. Yeah, I know the P51 is a fighter, but it's part of the group that flies in.

P-51 here. Took a gamble since that's the only one I could say was a plane (though, apparently they originally just counted up as opposed to now where they jumped like, 8 to get to F-35...)
The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.

Both right. Top plane is a P-51D model. It has a bubble canopy; the A through C models had a framed canopy faired into the rear fuselage with very poor visibility to the rear. Survivability went up once pilots could "check their six."econgator wrote: ↑Sat Mar 10, 2018 11:01 pmNewer one is likely an F-16.Leander wrote: ↑Sat Mar 10, 2018 8:07 pmThe old plane looks like a P-51 Mustang.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Sat Mar 10, 2018 7:58 pm My brother took this picture from the October 2017 show, not I have any idea what's flying in the photo.
Bottom plane is an F-16 "Fighting Falcon", still in service as a front-line combat aircraft. Hard to tell from the photo whether the nose is painted black or gray -- if black, it's an F-16A early block one production model. After that one, the nose color switched to gray. The A/B/C/D variants are hard to tell apart based on very subtle differences like wing strakes, weapon hardpoints, and horizontal stabilizer configuration.
Cool photo, thanks for sharing. Always fun to see multiple generations of warbirds in formation.

I might disagree about the Pavlov; Flying Tigers and Doolittle raid don't associate a whole lot with anything but the P-40 Warhawk and the B-25 Mitchell.twelvefootboy wrote: ↑Sun Mar 11, 2018 11:20 am In reflection, I remember the Flying Tigers as being a thing in the Asian theater, but there isn't a Pavlov pairing to any particular plane. Not a correction about Tuskegee airmen, but perhaps an expansion. The Tuskegee airmen went operational with P-39s in one squadron and P-40s in the other, but soon switched to P-47s. It was with the P-47 that they started using the famous "Red Tail" color scheme. They then finished out the war with P-51s, and are probably most closely associated with the Mustang.
One of my memorable moments occurred when I had the chance to shake hands with one of the last Tuskegee airmen on active duty. I was a Staff Sergeant in Germany in 1975 when our unit was switched from USAF Europe to Military Airlift Command. As part of the command change, Gen. "Chappie" James, then vice commander of MAC, came to our base and toured the squadron. First four-star African-American officer, and a HUGELY impressive and imposing man with an inspiring history of Tuskegee training and dozens of combat missions in Korea and Viet Nam. I remember shaking his hand, looking up at this linebacker-sized general, and thinking "how did he squeeze into a fighter cockpit?" It was a stunner to personally meet an icon I learned about in basic training as a legend.

I clammed, but if given a bit more time to think I probably would have gone with P-51. To this late Baby Boomer, that's the main P-xx aircraft to know. I always figured there were others, but I couldn't name any.

My reaction was along the lines of "Doesn't quite look like a P-51 (from my admittedly limited knowledge), and they probably want something less well known at $2,000". But I took a chance and went with it anyway.

Re: One DJ! Round clue from the 3/8/18 game (Plane)
Way cool.
Damn there are a lot of plane models. My Dad was a gun commander on Coast Artillery before getting reassigned to Infantry in the ETO after D-Day. Somehow I've seen the silhouette graphic they had to study to identify aircraft. I don't know how you do it. But, I can't find my car in an empty parking lot.
So much for 20% get rate, we are at 4% now. More favorably on the R/W we are at 2/17 , or 11%. I don't think the CLAMMER's would bring the 4% up much

Here's a photo of a restored P-40 I took at an air show.

Paul Allen (one of the co-founders of Microsoft in case it comes up!) has an impressive collection of (primarily) military aircraft and armor that is on display at a museum at Paine Field in Everett, WA. Nearly all the airplanes are kept in flying condition and the museum has a few "fly days" per summer. I love seeing and hearing these old warbirds take to the sky.

The museum is well worth a visit especially if you're already doing the Boeing tour which is based at the same airport.
