CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS
Alex: Peter Karamitsos is from Illinois. And Karamitsos is...
Peter: Greek.
Alex: Greek.
Peter: Correct.
Alex: You didn't learn to speak Greek as a child, though.
Peter: Not growing up, no.
Alex: How old were you?
Peter: I was in my 30s. I was about 34. Something I always wanted to do, and I met a woman at a church festival in Chicago, told me she was taking lessons, and I said, "Oh, I'd like to do that." So I signed up for the same class. After about nine years, I can get by. Not perfectly, but I can get by.
Alex: Way to go.
Alex: Allison Berke from Half Moon Bay, California. Cybersecurity research director whose graduate work involves studying how fish smell.
Allison: Yes.
Alex: Well, if you--if they go bad, they smell bad.
Allison: Exactly, that was the entirety of--No. I studied olfactory receptors, so they're how humans smell and also how fish smell and other animals.
Alex: Not sure I'd want to do that kind of study myself.
Alex: Zach Dark, folks, is our champion. Hates thrill rides, but he rode one that had "terror" in its name. What are we talking about here?
Zach: Well, this was unknowingly. I didn't know. This was my first trip to a pretty major theme park, and the first day there, the first ride that I rode there had this word "terror" in it. And it was a free fall, and I didn't care for it.
Alex: Was it terrifying?
Zach: It was, yes.
Alex: I'll ask no more.
JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Peter found the Daily Double on the 19th clue. Zach had $1,400, Allison had $5,000, and Peter was at $1,400. Peter wagered $1,200.
HISTORICAL NICKNAMES $800: "Ironsides":
This soldier & lord protector of England
(Peter: Who... is... Wellington?)
TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
PERFECT RESPONSES FOR JEOPARDY! $600: In a Longfellow poem, Priscilla Mullins asks this question of John Alden
PERFECT RESPONSES FOR JEOPARDY! $1000: This question from "The Merchant of Venice" mentions a bridge on the grand canal
HOLD MY WINE $1000: This white wine grape appropriately named for a Roman god is found in many German wines
SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Zach: $6,600
Allison: $5,400
Peter: $1,000

FROM THE BRITISH MONARCHY'S WEBSITE (4/5)
SOUTH AMERICAN CAPITALS (5/5, including 1 correct Daily Double)

THE RIGHTS & THE WRONGS
Peter: 12 R (including 1 rebound and 2 DDs), 1 W
Zach: 10 R (including 1 rebound), 2 W
Allison: 3 R, 0 W
Clues revealed: 29
Triple Stumpers: 4
Double Jeopardy! Round Potential Lach Trash: $6,800
FIRST DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Peter snagged the next Daily Double on the 2nd clue. Zach had $6,600, Allison had $5,400, and Peter was at $1,400. Peter wagered $2,000.
SOUTH AMERICAN CAPITALS $800: In 1821 it was made the capital of Gran Colombia, it's still a capital today
SECOND DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
It was Peter who snatched up the last Daily Double of the game on the 13th clue. Zach had $10,200, Allison had $5,400, and Peter was at $7,800. Peter wagered $3,000.
20th CENTURY REFERENCES $1200: It's come to mean immune to criticism; it was discovered by DuPont chemist Roy Plunkett in 1938
TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND
BIOGRAPHIES $2000: This author whose book inspired "Hamilton" had a new bio out in 2017, making some eager for the musical "Grant"
FROM THE BRITISH MONARCHY'S WEBSITE $2000: On this sacred day, 3 days before Easter, the queen visits a cathedral & passes out special money
(Zach: What is Good Friday?)
POP "STREET" $2000: Popular video game first released by Capcom in 1987
(Alex: Less than a minute now, Peter.)
EARTH SCIENCE $800: (Sarah of the Clue Crew presents the clue.) In 1912, Alfred Wegener proposed this theory of geological movement that was an important precursor to the concept of plate tectonics
SCORES ENTERING FINAL JEOPARDY!
Peter: $17,200
Zach: $12,600
Allison: $8,200
FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE
VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Two-thirds for first place. Stratton's Dilemma.
Peter: Wager $8,001 to cover Zach.
Zach: You ought to wager to cover Allison, but since you cannot win on a Triple Stumper if you do so, you should choose between wagering $0 and maximizing your winnings by betting all $12,600. You are in Stratton's Dilemma, calling for a wager of more than $3,800 (to shut out Allison) or less than $3,400 (risking the possibility of being passed from behind by Allison). Go with the smaller bet if you believe a Triple Stumper is more likely than a singleton miss by Peter.
Allison: Seeing as you don't have enough money to win on a Triple Stumper (you will lose by at least $1,000), you might try betting $4,401, playing for a win if Zach tries to two-thirds Peter (though, from this position, a wager of all $8,200 is acceptable and perhaps preferred as it forces Zach to cover you).
FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
Each state has as many electors as its total of senators & reps.; D.C. has this many, the minimum for any state
FINAL SCORES
Allison: $8,200 - $8,100 = $100 (What is [illegible] 4?) (3rd place: $1,000)
Zach: $12,600 + $4,601 = $17,201 (What is 3?) (2nd place: $2,000)
Peter: $17,200 + $10,200 = $27,400 (What is is three) (New champion: $27,400)
Total Potential Lach Trash: $9,400
GAME DYNAMICS
CORYAT SCORES
Peter: $15,400, 18 R (including 2 DDs), 3 W (including 1 DD)
Zach: $12,600, 21 R, 2 W
Allison: $8,200, 12 R, 0 W
Combined Coryat: $36,200
BATTING AVERAGES

Peter: 19/61 = .311
Allison: 12/58 = .207

HOLD MY WINE $200: The perception of texture & weight of a wine in the mouth; in a wine with rich & lingering flavor, it's "full"
(Alex: With less than a minute.)
HOLD MY WINE $400: Called "brown bag vino", this brand of wine contains 17.5% alcohol & shares its name with a model of Ford
(Peter: What is Mustang?)
SOUTH AMERICAN CAPITALS $2000: Fort Zeelandia in this nation's capital of Paramaribo was built to protect the Dutch West India Company

Re: Wednesday, March 14, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]
Allison ran ENDS WITH “SS” to earn the applause.
Do we have a term (other than coincidence) for a clue mentioning a recently deceased person? WHAT A HIGH-CLASS MISTAKE! $800: Calling the 2005 paper “Information In Black Holes” by this Cambridge prof. “Derivative”? Bad form
Peter took time to get his act together and by the end of the DJ! round he was in good shape with the aid of two Daily Doubles.
For the players not getting POP “STREET” $2000:
Clue 30 of the DJ! round did not air although it seemed like there could have been an edit signaling the end of the round that perhaps indicated the players saw the clue and it went TS.
The FJ! round category had me thinking some kind of run around the map for high or low count states and my preference is to play such a clue closer to 2016 or 2020 in presidential election years and not in between when the numbers are rustier.
The clue avoided the need for the scramble amongst the states and number memory and instead pinpointed where to go and what to do. I can do that math on one hand. Done. Tough miss for Allison on something that can be easy to overthink with the saving grace being she was leaving with $1000 either way.

Gosh, what a simple FJ! Did they really need to give us the formula in the clue?
A Stephen Hawking clue on the day of his death. How apropos.
I had one of my worst starts in ages, negging three times and netting a whopping $200 of Coryat before the break. I also did the math right on the Maundy Thursday clue, but got it mixed up with Shrove Tuesday.
Sad to see Zach go. I appreciated his laid-back demeanor and style of play.

It sounded like Zach said Hawkings.
England had two Lord Protectors with the same last name. Alex, we need you to be more specific.

Re: Wednesday, March 14, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]
FJ would've been on the simple side if they had just said "'DC has this many electors', thirty seconds, good luck!", with no other hints. Telling us that it matches the minimum for states made it too easy. SPELLING OUT THE EXACT FORMULA for how many electors each state has? Criminal. I guess they can't all be TOC-level...
The back-and-forth of the DJ round was like watching a tennis match. Poor Allison. Nice start, then got caught between two buzzsaws.

Surely this will end Hammer’s drought.

I have before Easter in his poll. He can do 2+1? You may rely on it. Knowing DC's number right off the bat? Outlook not so good. Guessing a low number, heck any number? Don't count on it. Each state has two senators? Reply hazy try again. Each state has at least one representative? Cannot predict now.
Will Hammer solve the FJ! clue? Concentrate and ask again.

I know the above is meant in jest but I think it is borderline insensitive.

The category made me think of this episode.

I guess this episode settles the question of whether the show would accept a response that is already in the form of a question. Not only a whole category, but Alex even made a point of saying they don't need to "double question" (my words) the response. A precedent has been set.

Wonder if they'd have accepted "Holy Thursday" for "Maundy Thursday"... I imagine so.

The FJ seems to have been very difficult for people on Jeopardy’s Facebook page.
