TD 372 - CLASSIC AREA CODES 4xx (FINAL RESULTS)

Post by floridagator »

This is not merely a TD, but the third in a RING of EIGHT TDs. The theme of this ring of TDs is Classic Area Codes. Until 1995, all area codes had 0 or 1 as their middle digit. Those are the classic North American area codes. There will be a TD for each starting digit, 2 through 9. You don't need to know anything about area codes to play or succeed. Read the questions. Many are EASY!

To up my game, there will be an ACTUAL AWARD for the winner of the ring of eight TDs. To be eligible to win an Amazon gift card, you must participate in all eight TDs. Winner will be the one with the lowest total score.

Each TD in the ring will have at least one visual question, at least one aural question, at least one sports question, and one before and after question.

I don't want to take over TDs for eight weeks. However, you will notice TD 372 has been posted even before TD 371 closes on Monday morning, March 19. I would be more than happy to spread my TDs out, so would someone please get a TD ready to post on March 25-26?

Standard TD rules apply. For each question below, there are a number of choices. Choose one as your answer. Think Different is scored by the number of people who submit the same answer. It's best to be the only person who chooses a particular answer. The most common answer is called the sheep. You don't want to be a sheep. Incorrect answers get the sheep score plus five points. Low score wins. Bonus questions will allow you to reduce your score by up to five.

You may drop one question and sheep one question. (To sheep means to accept the highest score on a question without fear of giving an incorrect answer.) No research! Your answers must come from your head; not your reference library, search engine or your neighbor who writes for a quiz show. This TD closes Monday, March 26 at 2:00 PM EDT.

Submit your answers here

For information only, here's the area code map from the classic period. Note how simple it is compared to today's area code map.

Image

One additional point: The information provided on the online form is only there for purposes of identifying the question. If there is a conflict between something on the online form and this TD post, this post takes precedence.

Finally, I would like to put a halt to people asking questions about the questions in the forum. Providing more clarification isn't fair to people who submit early. Please advise me privately if I have made some error in constructing the TD, but do not expect me to provide more information about the clues. If you're not sure something is a correct answer, don't use it. There must be some you're absolutely sure about.

On with the TD...

Fun TD. My personal toughest choices were in the audio clips because I knew every song -- I had at least a third of the songs floridagator presented by the two undisclosed artists on 45 RPM singles growing up, and the "Greatest Hits" vinyl LP by one of them is still sitting on my shelf. Alongside at least two and maybe three Tony Bennett LPs.

And here's a fun silly tidbit about Tony Bennett (actually, Frankie Laine) -- on the director commentary for "Blazing Saddles," Mel Brooks said that Bennett (Laine) thought he was doing the title song to a legit western, was so outraged when he saw the movie that he didn't want to be associated with it, and tried to cancel his permission to use his performance on the sound track. Guess his hide was a little raw.

Post-posting edit: As pointed out below, the stricken paragraph is an egregious error. I thought about deleting it, but instead left it as a public note-to-self to "think twice, read thrice, THEN submit once."

And it was still a fun TD.

I’m just disappointed the 403 wasn’t about the territories, as they also had that code as the map indicates. Could have been some great questions there!

100% correct. I realized I had somehow confabulated the two about half an hour after I posted that. Unfortunately, it was also about 10 minutes after I had driven away from the house for the day. I spent the day hoping I could delete the post before it became locked. Sigh.

My apologies to you and the board. And to Tony Bennett. And Frankie Laine. And to Mel Brooks.

Re: TD 372 - CLASSIC AREA CODES 4xx (CLOSES MONDAY)

Post by floridagator »

Get your entry in asap. This TD was scheduled to close at 9 a.m. eastern daylight time on Monday but since I will not be able to immediately start the reveal on Monday morning the way I did with my three recent TD's, I am happy to extend the deadline to 2 p.m. which is the absolute earliest that I would be able to start the reveal as a practical matter I don't think the reveal will be underway until after 6. So you are safe to submit right up until the reveal start and absolutely safe until 2 p.m.

So please submit your answers for TD 372 and then keep an eye out for TD 373, which is not mine.

Not doing too badly for once, but I know I have a wrong answer coming on a question I should have been able to score a singleton.
Teems with quiet fun.

Waffle House
Not sure if you've ever been to a waffle house, but they make everything fresh to order. Sure its a greasy spoon type place, but everything is made to order and not taken out of a freezer and reheated. I figured you were asking for waffle house, but the clue did not lead there so I ended up going with Coke. I spent many a Sunday morning in WH around metro Atlanta with my scattered covered and chunked hash browns and ham and cheese omelets.
