CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Michael Boss is a physicist from Broomfield, Colorado. And physics is very important to you in your life.

Michael: Yes, it is, Alex. My wife and I were married at my alma mater, and I had to have a picture with the wedding party in front of the physics department. So that's pretty much our favorite wedding photo.

Alex: That is unusual, but hey, you're loyal. Way to go.

Alex: Lydia Disabatino from Chicago. A data analyst who once spent 24 hours in a movie theater.

Lydia: So before the seventh episode of Star Wars came out, the movie theater where I lived showed all six in a marathon before. So we watched all six and then the new one.

Alex: Did you bring food in too?

Lydia: Oh yeah. Pizza, everything.

Alex: A lot of food? All right.

Alex: Jack Dickey is our champion. He's a journalist. He's from New York. And he's a big New York Mets fan. How many games do you admit to having been at?

Jack: As a civilian, I've been to 74 games. You know, I've gone to some others for work. But I can't--I can't shake the habit. And I put them all in a spreadsheet even though the Mets are terrible.

Alex: How do you deal with Yankees fans?

Jack: Man. You just kind of--you just let them do their thing, because otherwise they will get under your skin.

Alex: Okay. All right.

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
VIRGINIA GOVERNORS $1000: Nicknamed "Light-Horse Harry", he represented the Federalist party as governor of Virginia
(Michael: Who is Harrison?)

THE FICTION SECTION $800: Irving Stone's fictionalized biography of artist Vincent Van Gogh has this passionate 3-word title

THE FICTION SECTION $1000: "The Bridge of San Luis Rey" earned this author a Pulitzer Prize

THE POSTMAN'S 4-LETTER WORDS $1000: Lignite, for example
(Alex: What is [*]? Colorado and Alabama.)

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Jack: $8,600
Michael: $4,400
Lydia: -$800

FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
19th CENTURY CLASSICAL MUSICIANS

VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Crush for first place.
Jack: Wager $2,201 to cover Lydia, but no more than $10,199 so as not to fall behind Michael's doubled score.
Lydia: You have the hope of surpassing Jack if you come up with the correct response. Bet at least $6,001 to force Jack to wager to win; but if you're intent on holding on to second place, wager no more than $4,199 to protect your second place position from being usurped by Michael.
Michael: Unfortunately, your score is less than the difference between the scores of the first and second place players, so unless they both blunder, you're competing for second place and have no hopes of first. Wager as much as you desire, but remember, you'll have better chances of advancing to second place if you have a larger sum left over on a Triple Stumper.

FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
The father of this future composer was a French teacher at the Warsaw Lyceum, where the child would later attend

FINAL SCORES
Michael: $2,000 + $1,998 = $3,998 (Who is Chopin?) (3rd place: $1,000)

A day late and more than a dollar short: Lydia played a day after there was a category LYDIA, OH LYDIA and Michael the physicist played a day after there was a category PHYSICS GLOSSARY.

Nice job by the players getting through the material quickly today even with the 4th material nuggets (especially in THE FICTION SECTION) up for grabs as there was time for the full credits run of staff members.

Allow me to ruin the 100% for the FJ! clue right off the bat. I was good enough to have 12 in a row going and bad enough to miss today even with not being a superstitious person.

I read the FJ! clue more than once and each time I read it as this: The father of this future composer was a French teacher at the Lyceum, where the child would later attend

There is no explanation how I overlooked the key capital city in the clue and I left myself looking for a notable family connection of J! names in the 1800s. Renoir & Strauss were the names I had and I did not even go French as my crossing went the German way.

I was determined to miss the clue as my precalls of Segovia, Casals, and Paganini did not fully fit the category even though they were all alive in the 1800s while the right guy only lived in the 1800s.

Jack is off to a 6/6 start on big clues although I found it curious that his Coryat dropped by 4000 compared to yesterday. The jury is still out on his combination of buzzer skills and range of knowledge.

Opposite reaction to the clue here, i.e., saw pretty much "Warsaw composer" only. Someone said that they must have opened the box of "Teen Week" FJ clues by accident recently; that seems to be the case. If anything, it would be easy to overthink some of these recent clues, like, is there some other famous Polish composer I'm supposed to know about??

This.

It took me a second to get the Sun and Sand motel. My first thought was Florida (since California came up in the previous question), but then I looked at the sign and realized that it was using the Zuni sun symbol found on the NM flag, and realized that has to be the clue they're looking to be picked up, so it would be NM. Also, I picked up the $1000 clue just because "Hang Na" sounded Vietnamese.

Ran the Big 12 category. (I know that Iowa is in the B1G and that Iowa State is in the Big 12.)

Can't believe that Judas was the $1600 clue in stolen art. Maybe it's just that we're so close to Easter and Holy Week.

Well, at least it wasn't another picture clue. But yeah, Polish + French? Easy peasy (I figured that's why he had a French name, but never bothered to look it up).

Lawrence = Kansas was a very obscure connection for the top box IMO.

Got all but Coal in the Postal Abbreviations, and all but the DD in Entrepeneurs.

I thought the Bayer clue was bogus. I'm supposed to know the slogan of one of the 847 brands of pain relievers?

"Westworld" joins the "NHOI in the top box" pile, and I actually did do a search of the forum this time to prove it.

Not even a guess on FJ!

I couldn't believe all the Lach trash in the J! round Literature category, but this was still a great game. I also picked up saltcellar (which seemed undervalued) and de Kooning.

The DJ round TV category got me back for the Lit, because those were all sit and stares for me.

I loved the medicinal marijuana clue, but the TOM wasn't there for me to connect the dots on it.

I would have bet all but $2 on that last DD. It turned out to be an overvalued clue.

Instant get FJ.

The champ is good. He could go far.

Coryat: 30,000
43 R/3 W
DD: 3/3
FJ:
LT: Lust For Life, coal, Macau (DD), Zambezi River (DD)

"French and Polish? Piece of cake for you." Indeed, Alex. Indeed.

Awful wager by Michael on DD3. It's the last clue of the game. You have to get it right to have a chance at winning. BET. IT. ALL.

No BMS on "Freeman"? How do we know he didn't think that was a picture of Morgan?

Some people might get it from the slogan, but most would get it from "introduced in 1899." Aspirin, which was introduced by Bayer, is by far the oldest over-the-counter pain reliever.

Anybody get all four daily doubles?

Fell for the Hong Kong guess when they wanted Macau. Shoulda clammed. I knew I didn't know enough about those two to reliably pick the one that matched the clue.

I pre-called Paganini and Liszt for FJ. But the clue went straight to Chopin. He's the only Polish composer they'll ever ask you to name. (And when they throw in the French angle, it's even more of a gift.) There are a handful of Polish composers where they might give you the name and expect you to know the nationality: Paderewski, Szymanowski, Lutosławski, Penderecki, and Górecki. Those are all mostly or exclusively 20th century composers.

I remember a string of news stories from a while ago when there was drama between Sheldon Adelson and Macau regarding casinos. Ruled Hong Kong out easily.

Somehow I'm only 3 for the last 8 on Final as compared to this super easy stretch of Finals for the rest of you, so I'm happy this was a nice softball of a clue.

Tally me for all four Daily Doubles tonight.. a rarity indeed!

Got FJ by closing my ears to the clue TOM's and going with Warsaw and composer, pretty confident the 19th century would catch part of Chopin. For you non-musicians, at least at my level, Chopin's music is notorious for it's difficulty and extreme fingering requirements. I couldn't find the reference, but a peer complained that if people had 12 fingers he would write music for it. (sorry if I made you dumber).

I hated the Big 12 category - especially the Iowa negbait. Jack seemed to command the game and it was a fait accompli by the closing bell. I would have come up with Macau on the DD but got sidetracked by the silly clue mentioning some dude wasn't a gambler but owned casinos. Is there supposed to be a connection to casino owners and gambling? I enjoyed the wording of the clue about the racetrack Daily Double.

I think Jack may be a sleeper. We'll see how he handles DD's next time he gets one.
