Alex: Nicholas Campiz, as you heard in the introduction, is a graduate student in geography. And, Nicholas, as you've heard I'm sure many times, I'm a big advocate of geography studies. I have said that history is about the past, but geography is about the future. What are you gonna do with your degree?

Nicholas: I'd like to go into regional planning for cities or counties. Um, that's--I'm an economic geographer, so that's what I'd like to do.

Alex: So it is about the future.

Nicholas: Yes.

Alex: I'm right. Good. I like being right.




Alex: Sally Sommers, biology professor from Kennebunk, Maine. Your son is a professional athlete?

Sally: Yes, he is. My son Matthew is a professional candlepin bowler.

Alex: Candlepins are the tall ones?

Sally: They are. It--it's a peculiar form of bowling that's done only in New England and in the Maritime Provinces of Canada.

Alex: Of Canada, yes.

Sally: And it's a very difficult game.

Alex: Is he good at it?

Sally: He's very good.

Alex: All right.




Alex: Dave Leach is our champion. He hosted a trivia quiz show for a couple of years--where?

Dave: In Atlanta. There's actually a very vibrant bar and restaurant trivia scene in Atlanta. And this has been some years ago. The place where I was a regular, that host decided he wanted to retire, and the owner invited me to take it over, so...

Alex: Was it a restaurant or a bar?

Dave: Uh, both, actually. I hosted from the bar, but it was in the restaurant.

Alex: Oh, the best of both worlds right there.

WOW. I'll be honest, I didn't think I'd see someone do that on a late round DD, but it worked out! Co-champs! How 'bout that. I will say, though, that it wasn't a risk I would've taken in that spot; there was a clue left, and I didn't hear a LTaM warning. How much was that last clue worth? I'm not sure if it was enough for 3rd to overtake him, but that would've been another strike against that strategy.

Needless to say, Appetizers was hopeless for me. Three über-fancy foods, then a piss-easy "purple member of the nightshade family" at $1600?

I didn't get any $800s or $1000s in J!, which is rare.

FJ! was a piece of cake. Faraway planet, discovered late? Well, sure, why not go all the way to the end for Neptune.

I love ties just because they're so rare.

Ummm, was there a miss with graphics somewhere? Even Dave wasn't shown his 4-day / $60,884 graphic, which would be a minimum. (It was shown on Lanny Timan's, which is what makes me wonder.)

- Easiest final in a while, by far.

- How the hell have we forgotten John Ashcroft already? That shouldn't have been hard.

- As for the game itself, that was painful for Dave, definitely not quality winning material, but he tried.

Knowing that Uranus was the previous century and Pluto was the next century, I spent about 20 seconds scrambling for any other possible answer. That was ridiculously easy.

Loved the DD wager going for the lock-tie. Dave's been pretty candid so far with his experience, I wouldn't be surprised if he informs us that he threw the question just to force the lock-tie (even though there was still a clue on the board). Very cool.

I was playing the game with my girlfriend over the phone (her idea) so I'm guessing that's why I was hiccuping all over the board. Didn't fully comprehend the "Old" category until the $600 clue, didn't figure out the "number after 1" category until $1000, and completely blanked on the Latin category until the Ovid clue (which I thought was pretty easy). Needless to say, I won't be playing Jeopardy with my girlfriend over the phone anymore.

That was a pretty shrewd second DD wager and incorrect response, huh Dave? It pretty much allowed him a fourth win and a possible spot in the TofC next time(his total means another win would help his chances of getting there), since FJ! was a triple get and the leader wouldn't likely have wagered zero if the game wasn't a lock-tie or runaway.
Of course the Sony J! site having ten contestants spoiled there'd be co-champs this week. Dave's new four day total is $60,884($48684 + $12200), since they didn't as far as I could see display his total on screen, with Alex instead talking about the other player getting the second place $2K parting gift.

This board was easy, for the most part. The only category that gave me a hard time was the Appetizers...I went 1/5 and I am pretty sure that I had never heard of at least 3 of the correct responses in that category.

I got Neptune pretty quickly but I was a little afraid that I may have been overlooking something. I knew it was the only planet that was a possibility, though.

$6100 $5000 $12200 were the scores going into the last clue, with the last clue about John Aschroft a triple stumper. Third getting it would have bought her to $6200, and if the leader wagered more than $200, it would have been him being the only champ. Anyone getting that last DJ! clue right or wrong would have cost Dave his fourth win most likely.

Unless you're talking about an ad on TV, I think most here have learned the hard way to stay far away from the previews on the J! website.

My guess is that it was intended as a deliberate miss, but he genuinely didn't know the answer (judging by the look on his face).

I think it seemed pretty obvious based on his wager that he had no intentions of getting it right. Now whether he actually had any idea or not, I don't know, but if he did know it, he did a hell of an acting job making it look like he had no bloody clue. I knew it was likely someone from the Nixon administration, but couldn't pull the actual name.

Congratulations Dave, and you may be my new hero, at least for tonight. I was calling out the $700 wager to you from my recliner, and was both shocked and amazed that you actually heard me. What I want to know is how were you able to disable the other two players' buzzers in order to make sure that they didn't get Ashcroft on the final clue?
