CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Jordan Goodson is a senior at Columbia whose major is political science and whose ambition is to become a civil rights attorney. Why?

Jordan: Well, I used to want to be a playwright, but I started noticing what was happening in the world around me, and I thought a lot of people needed help. And while art is a great medium, I thought I really wanted to be on the ground helping people. That's why I want to be a civil rights attorney.

Alex: Good for you.

Alex: William Scott is from Los Altos, California. He's a freshman at Tufts. You can tell by the sweatshirt.

William: Yeah.

Alex: Interested in game theory and artificial intelligence, with a view to accomplishing what in life?

William: You know, I really like building computers that can do things better than I can, so if I'm playing a game, I try and like, put all my strategies onto a computer, see if I can make a computer that beats me. I'd really like to apply that.

Alex: When you say "building a computer", are you building it from scratch?

William: No, just the software.

Alex: The software.

William: Yeah.

Alex: And you understand all that stuff?

William: Learning about it.

Alex: Okay, you're way ahead of me, I tell ya.

Alex: Rebecca Rosenthal is a sophomore from Swarthmore. You live in New Jersey, don't you?

Rebecca: I do.

Alex: And you work at the college's costume shop?

Rebecca: Yes, I do.

Alex: Doing what? Sewing?

Rebecca: Yeah, sewing.

Alex: Really?

Rebecca: Yes. I sew a lot of costumes for our dance performances and our theater performances, and this semester, i'm actually head designer for Shakespeare's troupe performance of The Tempest.

Alex: Wow. Are you always working behind the scenes, or do you sometimes get out on stage and perform in costumes that you have put together?

Rebecca: I have. I do a little bit of the more casual stuff. I'm not a big-time actor.

Alex: Okay. All right.

Rebecca: $5,000

Rebecca: Your score is within 4/5ths of William's, so wager between $1,201 (venusian) and $17,399 (martian), beating William's maximum safe bet of the difference between your scores while still covering against a doubled score on Jordan's part.
Jordan: There's no way you can cover a rational wager by Rebecca, but if Rebecca decides for some reason to wager everything, you can eke out a win on a Triple Stumper if you wager no more than $1,000.

FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
In one version Thetis killed 6 of her children in her attempts to make them immortal; this warrior was her seventh

FINAL SCORES

DISNEY CHANNEL MOVIES FLASHBACK had me with a small goal of wanting to avoid the skunk. I did a little better than I hoped for getting 2.5 with the $200, $400 and first part of the $600 clue.

After DD3 Rebecca had taken the lead 22200 to 19200 for William with $7600 left on the board. FIRST IN YOUR CLASS $2000 played next: In 1954, in the first successful organ transplant, an identical twin gave up one of these to his brother

Rebecca: What is a heart?
William: What is a kidney?

That changed the scoreboard to:
William: 21200
Rebecca: 20200

At clue 30 it was:
William: 22400
Rebecca: 21800

And this clue (COLLEGE HONORS $2000) concluded the round:
This director won a Student Oscar for “Joe’s Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads” before his 1st feature, “She’s Gotta Have It”

That was Rebecca’s chance to regain the lead and the clue was a TS instead.

After Jordan’s QF game I posted this brilliant statement: “If Jordan makes it she could have an easier game in avoiding the tough combo of Thatcher and Dhruv.”

Wrong: Jordan did make it through with a wildcard berth, but she had an even worse time up against Rebecca & William.

The FJ! clue wanted a warrior in Greek mythology. For the FJ! round Hector & Ajax could be in play. With the word “immortal” included in the wording it’s going to be the third guy.

In the Cheezguyty area: Where does this game rank for highest losing score in a tournament? Last time (if ever) all three final scores began with a 43-?

The division of the semifinal match-ups by quarterfinal results:
Spoiler
S1: W1 (top winner) + WC2 (2nd highest scoring wildcard) + WC3
S2: WC1 + W5 + WC4
S3: W2 + W3 + W4
For comparison the 11/17 TOC was:
W2 + WC2 + WC3
W1 + W3 + W5
W4 + WC1 + WC4

I was intrigued by this weird clue phrasing:
Spoiler
GETTING AN HTTP CODE 101 ON YOUR COMPUTER MEANS IT'S SWITCHING TO ANOTHER THIS, A LETTER IN HTTP.
After the stumper tone sounded,
Spoiler
"That letter is the P, and it means protocol"
I suspect that a one-letter answer might've been accepted. (perhaps after an initial neg and subsequent review...)

edit: would've to might've :)

I knew that Thetis was the mother of Achilles, and I am not sure that I would have got this clue otherwise. I am thinking that I knew that Achilles was notable for being a youngest sibling, but I don't know if that would have helped me.

Ran Heteronyms.

4/5 in my wheelhouse Animal category. No way was I interpreting that as an armadillo.

4/5 in Computer. Never used Snapchat so I didn't know what their logo is, and I don't think of ghosts as "fading away". I actually own an Alienware, so no way was I missing that clue.

4/5 in "Magna". Can't say I've heard of "magnanimous".

On the other hand, I recognized nothing in that Disney Channel Movies category. Generational lockout much?

Also went 0/5 in Dean's List, Colleges, and surprisingly, Roads Scholar. Overthought "interstate" and was trying to turn "border-to-border" or "countrywide" into 10 letters.

No guess on FJ! None of the words pointed me anywhere. There were lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of warriors, and lots and lots etc. of supposedly immortal people. How was this a triple get?!

Not that it made a difference, but I was surprised the writers identified CS Lewis with Cambridge, when he taught there for only 9 years and was much more closely associated with Oxford for most of his life.

I didn’t know anything about his family, but the bit about his mother wanting to make him immortal made it obvious.

Rebecca’s slip-up on heart/kidney gave away the lead. Then her all-in bet on FJ gave Jordan a chance to win.

One post Rebecca made on Reddit: This Classics major was sure hoping for a very difficult FJ in that category. ;)

This game is a loss for the Strong Form of Shore's Conjecture. The second-place player bet "big."

I'm not sure I've ever seen a Shore's Conjecture College Championship semifinal game where the second-place player didn't bet big. --Bob

Disney Channel Movies!?!? YES PLEASE!

Greek, Warrior, Immortal, instaget final blah blah blah. I felt that was a tad on the easy side for a college tournament.

Not often you lose with a $43K total... hard luck there. I need to stop rooting for things and maybe they'll actually happen for once, as I feel like I jinxed Rebecca last week. I thought she was the best player in this field and my rooting interest in Week 2. :( Props to William though as he played a most excellent game.

Rebecca's $43,600 does set a new record for highest non-winning score in a tournament game (the previous marks were $39,600 in the 2012 Teen Tournament semifinal 2 and $20,400 in pre-doubling values in the 2001 ToC semifinal 1).

Only three previous times have all three final scores begun with a 4:
  • June 28, 2013 -- $4,400 / $4,000 / $401
  • May 27, 2008 (Larissa Kelly game 6) -- $42,800 / $40,399 / $4,600
  • June 25, 2004 (Ken Jennings game 18) -- $48,801 / $44,400 / $4,600 (Michael Cudahy's unadjusted record still stands)

I had handicapped Rebecca and Dhruv as the players to beat in this tourney. William did just that tonight, but Rebecca lived up to expectations. Nice payday for her at least.

Disney Channel Movies? HELL NO! Got only Adventures in Babysitting only because it was an '80s film.
Rebecca impressed with Alienware, then punted it away with her guess of heart. Ouch.
Jordan impressed with Hanseatic League. Two clues I did not expect them to get.
FJ between Hercules & Achilles, but Herc was more than just a warrior.
