CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Those of you who are regular fans of our program know that in all of our tournaments, our championships, on the second day of the final, I let the contestants, the finalists, talk about anything they want to talk about. Dhruv, your parents are looking on now, so watch what you say. Watch what you bring up.

Dhruv: Sure. I just wanna take a second to thank all the teachers I've ever had, because they've really--in school and otherwise, people have just taught me things because they really inspired me to go out and learn more and gain more knowledge, which has given me the opportunity to do this today and is responsible for me being successful.

Alex: Has this been a fun experience for you?

Dhruv: It's been so fun.

Alex: Hannah, what about you? Has this been fun?

Hannah: It's been really fun.

Alex: What's the best part of being a finalist in this kind of a tournament?

Hannah: I think the best part about being a finalist is that you've come so far with the people who you're playing with, and you've gotten to know them really well. And it's just kind of like playing with your friends at this point.

Alex: Mm-hm. Terrific.

Alex: William, what about you? What do you want to talk about?

William: Gosh, I mean, well, like everyone else, I'd like to give a thank you to everyone that's helped me along the way, and especially to my high school cross-country coach. He really taught me what it means to work hard for your goals, so thank you, Coach Daly.

Alex: Let me put you on the spot now, William, if I may. Tell me about how you feel about how you and the other players in this championship have been treated by our staff, because they don't always get enough credit.

William: You know, the staff has been fantastic. When we come in for our first day, we're just bundles of nerves, we're all wrecks. They help so much. The staff are great. Thank you, all.

Alex: Okay.

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Dhruv: $10,400
William: $5,200
Hannah: $1,000

Johnny: …William Scott who did not win anything on yesterday’s show.

The players got Alex in on the action for the choreographed intro:

The what if game. William solves DD2 and has 21600 for the FJ! round for a possible 43,200 total.

Dhruv had 9000 in the bank so would need 34200 at the end of today or 17100 for the FJ! round. He had a cushion above that thanks to a small wager and miss on DD3. The question is how he might have bet on DD3 with the alternate score scenario.

One “if” I would imagine is Dhruv solves the FJ! clue if he needed it. I got the FJ! clue right and it was not until after the show was over that I wondered if anyone on the board will go the wrong way with Roland.

For the TOC Dhruv showed plenty in four games to earn at least a Silver group and for now he’s in Gold with a limited field so far.

For the tournament only 3 clues were not played. For the next ten games of regular play I will bet the over for more than 3 not revealed.

ETA: I liked the way the scores from yesterday were combined with the scores going into the FJ! round in this shot:

Was that done for the TOC in November and I missed noticing it?

Code: Select all

William: 0 8800 8800 17600
Hannah: 7600 4600 12200 16800
Dhruv: 9000 18200 27200 45400
Dhruv: Bet less than $9,600, and enjoy your victory.
William: Bet $8,001 to cover Hannah.
Hannah: Bet anything you want, as William's wager to cover you will knock him down below your day 1 score if he is wrong.

Emulating medieval knights + literary character = Don Quixote. Not as much of a Pavlovian TOM there, but good clue nonetheless. I batted 1.000 in the tournament.

I was stuck for a bit trying to think of someone French or in King Arthur’s gang. Then I expanded my thinking a bit for a knight with an imagination to sweep the week and go 8-2 for the tournament.

The students went 17-12 for the two weeks, not counting Dhruv’s joke answer today.

An excellent group of finalists, although I'll admit that I was hoping William was going to get that DD - and thought he had it, too. It is a somewhat obscure bit of knowledge about the Land Down Under.

FJ was far superior to the Kids' Week level in Week 1. It was another one where there could have been some other respectable guesses but it also wasn't that difficult to eliminate those to come up with the correct response.

I would have liked some suspense in today's game but all in all a good tournament.

This was a really well-played tournament, from start to finish. It was also the easiest college tournament I've ever seen, and this was the easiest final game of a tournament I've ever seen. 51 R is a new personal record, although I missed all the DD's.
I would already rate Dhruv a Silver for the next TOC. He didn't get distracted by all the board-hopping, and neither did the others (and they all did it).
Hoping for a third lap

For FJ my first thought was Lancelot and I was happy enough about it that didn't seriously try to think of anything else. Oops.
Teems with quiet fun.

The correct response for FJ immediately came to mind but it seemed a little too obvious so I took the extra think time to consider Zorro, D'Artagnan and various Arthurian knights, none of which seemed to fit. That puts me at 9/10 for the tournament which is by far my best showing.

Another game where I was just too exhausted from work to play along. "Squad goals" and "show me receipts" still struck me as particularly baffling clues.

The Gorilla DD seemed very wide open. I didn't see any way to narrow that down to gorilla at all.

That lifeguard clue was easily a coinflip on Reagan vs. GHWB.

Blah blah blah blah name I don't recognize, never gonna get this. I know literally nothing about the correct response.

Surprising FJ. Got it, but I thought it a good level more difficult than Thursday's.
Thought orangutang would be far more obscure than gorilla.
