I asked my mother (63, works in a high school) if she'd ever heard of Me and Earl. She had but agreed the clue itself was obscure.

Wed - Easy get from childhood memory. Turned out to be a game of telephone - It's always been "the way, the truth, and the LIGHT". Oops. (actually Light is much more poetic imho).
Not so poetic in Latin -- via et veritas et lux.

BTW, that's how I always had remembered it, too, but I know "Vita" wasn't "Light," so I went with what it translated as.

Don't recall ever having heard the lean/clean thing.

Had truth and life but lost my way.
