CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: For ten years, he was a touring singer/songwriter. His name is Rex Moroux, and he's from Lafayette, Louisiana. What kind of songs are we talking about here?

Rex: Um, mostly in English.

Alex: Well, that's good.

Rex: Just singer/songwriter, rock 'n' roll kind of roots stuff, I think.

Alex: Working alone? Solo? Group?

Rex: Both. I had a group, and solo. Primarily toured solo.

Alex: Yeah, okay.

Alex: Kate Jovin from Somerville, Massachusetts. You're in a monthly book club that specializes in reading what kind of books?

Kate: I'm in a monthly book club, and we read children's books and young adult books. And I'm very privileged to be there because almost everyone in the club but me is a published children's author.

Alex: Author. Wow. Does that kind of encourage you to maybe pursue that and explore that?

Kate: Gosh, I hope so. Someday.

Alex: Yeah, okay. Good.

Alex: Kristin Robbins is our champion. She is an attorney. And believe it or not, this lovely young lady was heckled at her own wedding. Tell me about it.

Kristin: Yes. My husband Jason and I got married in the French Quarter in New Orleans two years ago. And it was the weekend of several bowl games, so there were a lot of people out in the Quarter celebrating, and they peeked their heads around the courtyard where we were getting married and yelled stuff at us. But mostly words of encouragement, so...

Alex: Okay, good for you.

JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Kristin found the Daily Double on the 24th clue. Kristin had $1,800, Kate had $7,400, and Rex had a deficit with -$800. Kristin made it a True Daily Double, wagering $1,800.

EUROPEAN HISTORY $600: During France's Reign of Terror, this wax modeler was forced to make death masks of freshly guillotined heads

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
SHAKESPEARE'S WOMEN $1000: After pledging her love to King Priam's son, she betrays him & takes up with Diomedes
(Rex: Who is Hector?)

FURNITURE $600: The inward curve of the short, heavy table leg gave it this name of an animal's proboscis
(Kate: What is a clawfoot?)

WHAT DO YOU LOVE? $400: Discophile
(Rex: What is dancing?)

WHAT DO YOU LOVE? $1000: Ailurophile

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Kate: $8,400
Kristin: $3,800
Rex: $200

Double Jeopardy! Round Potential Lach Trash: $6,000

FIRST DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Kristin snagged the next Daily Double on the 21st clue. Kristin had $15,400, Kate had $12,800, and Rex had a deficit with -$1,000. Kristin wagered $3,000.

5-LETTER LANDS $1600: The CIA World Factbook calls it "the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere"
(Alex: Kristin?)
(Kristin: What is Mexico?)

SECOND DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
It was Rex who snatched up the last Daily Double of the game on the 28th clue. Kristin had $12,400, Kate had $14,400, and Rex was at $5,000. Rex wagered $4,000.

TURNING PHILOSOPHICAL $1600: In the 18th century, this Swiss-French philosopher observed, "Man is born free, and everywhere, he is in chains"

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND
HERE'S THE CUSTOMS MAN $800: Losing his New Orleans customs job freed up H.L. Hunley to make this type of vessel he named after himself
(Rex: What is a steamship?)

HERE'S THE CUSTOMS MAN $2000: Long after his days exploring with Peary, this man started at the N.Y. customhouse at age 47 as a messenger

5-LETTER LANDS $1200: This Mediterranean country comprises 5 islands east of Tunisia
(Kate: What is Cyprus?)

ANYTHING TO "DE"CLARE? $2000: Hackers send thousands of requests to a website in the type of attack called DDOS, or "distributed" this
[The end-of-round signal sounds.]

SCORES ENTERING FINAL JEOPARDY!
Kate: $14,400
Kristin: $12,400
Rex: $9,000

FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
18th CENTURY AMERICA

VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Four-fifths for first place.
Kate: Wager $10,401 to cover Kristin.
Kristin: You're faced with a legitimate choice in strategy. You can either choose to cover Rex, hoping that you give the correct response and Kate doesn't, in which case you'll want to wager $5,601 to cover Rex's doubled score, but no more than $8,400 if you want to top Kate on a Triple Stumper; or bet up to $3,399 and win if both Kate and Rex miss Final.
Rex: If you think Kristin is going to wager to cover you, try wagering less than $2,200 to beat Kate and Kristin on the Triple Stumper; or, if you think Kristin is going to wager small in hopes of a Triple Stumper, wager between $3,401 (venusian, to top a $0 wager by Kristin) and $9,000 (martian, which may win in some cases but may also risk dropping you from second to third place if you get Final wrong).

FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
Congress met in June 1778 to sign these but found errors in the official copy; it had to reconvene with a new set in July

FINAL SCORES
Rex: $9,000 + $6,500 = $15,500 (What are The Articles of Confederation) (3rd place: $1,000)
Kristin: $12,400 + $12,400 = $24,800 (What are the Articles of Confederation?) (2nd place: $2,000)
Kate: $14,400 + $14,399 = $28,799 (What are the Articles of Confederation?) (New champion: $28,799)

Total Potential Lach Trash: $9,000

GAME DYNAMICS

DD2 decided the match at 5-LETTER LANDS $1600: The CIA World Factbook calls it “The poorest country in the Western Hemisphere”

Kristin lost 3000 by guessing a 6-letter country. It happens to forget to pay attention to the category and in this case it was almost as important as the clue as the list of possibles greatly narrows.

Rex was at minus 1000 after DD2 with only 9 clues remaining. For him to get to 9000 after clue 29 and the end of the round demonstrated how quickly a move can be made late in the game.

My history teachers made the material interesting enough in high school for the FJ! clue to be a quick slam dunk. As I like to do I used think time to imagine how someone could go wrong with it. All I had for a detour was The Federalist Papers.

Yup, one game of regular play and three clues not seen to match the total from 10 games of tournament play.

Rex talked about his music playing when chatting with Alex. If I am a coach on The Voice I hit the button and turn my chair around
Spoiler
Quick research shows episodes of RuPaul’s Drag Race on this Thursday the 26th with no mention of Alex Trebek appearing, so that puts the appearance Alex hinted at, in May on 5/3, 10, 17 or 24.

Her sheepish look upon delivering her response suggested to me that she knew it couldn't be right. If, upon hearing the question, you mentally start scanning south from the US via the mainland, it's going to be quite a while before you hit on any five-letter country (let alone the right one).

Rex almost made the comeback of the year, but it was too little, too late.

Got 3/5 in the RuPaul category, including Hairspray.

They couldn't have made FJ! much easier can they?

I think she was just running out of time and guessed some Western Hemisphere country, even though she knew it didn't have 5 letters, or wasn't the poorest. A wrong guess is no worse than no guess.

So we're back to random FJ wagers? Ok, then.

Edited to add that I feel for Kristin that the right 5 letter country didn't come to her but ouch on the response of Mexico. Maybe she didn't want to incur Alex's wrath by WAG'ing Canada.

Lost in Space was the only show I recognized in that TV Shows category.

"Desegregate" is a word?!

These were some very tough boards IMO.

Looked at the clue during the break to see if it could get the gears turning. But they were completely stuck and nothing at all came to mind.

A great comeback halted by a DD miss. I thought Haiti being poorest was well-known without even needing the 5-letter hint, but she couldn't pull it in time. Oh well.

Matthew Henson, a TS, again?

Add RuPaul to the list of pretty good video category presenters, yet they somehow ran out of time early again.

Instaget FJ. Given the timeframe and the plural there aren't a whole lot of possible wrong answers. Not sure wtf those wagers were.

I don't often root for a contestant on the basis of appearance and demeanor, but I found Kate to be so cute and charming that I was totally delighted when she won. If I had a granddaughter, I'd hope that she would be just like Kate: bright, fun, and (newly) affluent.

Yeah, I think Kristin knew that Mexico could not be right and was just throwing out a guess. I knew that one because I had heard the fact before, but if you didn't know it cold then it would probably be a tough one to tease out while under the lights.

I thought that this was a beautifully written board, though the European History category, the other two DDs, and FJ all struck me as really easy. Overall it was a tough board for me, though. I am kicking myself for only getting Juliet in the Shakespeare category; I may have gotten the others with more time, but they should have all been Pavolvian.

I just hope that Mexico reply for "poorest country in the Western Hemisphere" doesn't cause an international incident  Instaget for Haiti.

As soon as you hear the words "North Pole," go ahead and pavlov yourself for Peary or Henson. They seem to come up frequently on J! (I could've sworn there was another Peary clue during the College Tournament, and I was surprised to see Henson come up tonight, but I'm not finding it.)

Coryat: 32,800
43 R/3 W
DD: 3/3
FJ:
LT: elephant's trunk, records, Matthew Henson, Malta, Haiti (DD), denial of service

Major missed opportunity by Kate on the Taming of the Shrew clue.

I counted myself as correct for "energy" rather than "spirit" on Purusha. I'm seeing it in enough places online that I figure they'd have to give it to me, probably as a post-review reversal.

If you're dead in the water late in the game and hit a DD, then, for goodness sakes, bet. It. All.

Tonight's FJ! was a perfect example of why paying attention to syntax matters. The key words were "these" and "copy." What document that Congress would sign shortly after the Declaration of Independence would be a single copy but have a plural name? Recognizing that turns the clue into a slam-dunk WECIB.
Sprinkles are for winners.

Roald Amundsen does come up sometimes regarding the race to the North Pole, and being the first to traverse the Northwest Passage, so I guess my pavlovs aren't 100%.
