2018 Teachers Tournament Wild Card Standings (Final results

Post by Bamaman »

Here are the standings for the current tournament. Any discussion is welcome, but please do not comment on anything until the results for that game are posted. I am relying on the reddit guy to see the games, so I don't know when each day I'll be able to post. I will up date the thread title after a new game has been added.

We have our first two eliminations today. Scott and Claire seem to be in good shape for wild cards.

Scott and Claire move on while Erika and Beth sit on a very precarious bubble.

And yet again we see the importance of savvy wagering in a tournament setting. Mary Alice must have been kicking herself watching the wild card race play out. Had she made a bet of $3201 to overtake third, she would have ended up with $8799, which is looking pretty good right now.

Ranjani, 12K would've got you a spot in the semis easily. No need for the big bet. :(

This was from tonight's game. And she shouldn't have made that big bet.

There was still no reason for her to know that. The contestants are sequestered. However, that's a score that has been borderline qualifying, so it's probably relatively safe to stay close to it. No need to chase first place.

Erika made it thru to the semis as a wild card with $5600????? Unbelievable! Bad wagering in some of the 1st round games.

Everybody who got their Final Jeopardy correct made it to the semis.

Only 4 out 15 Final Jeopardy responses in the 1st round were correct! I impressed myself with pulling out Fargo (guess) at the last second, I also got The Globe in London and Pocket Veto, and William Tell (wild guess). 4/5 !

OK smart guys, what should all of the contestants have wagered and why?

QF wagering is probably the most difficult wager in Jeopardy because you don't have all the information so you cannot truly wager GTO. People here have knowledge of all totals and forget (and in some cases don't know which is hilarious) the contestants do not.

Why did they wager so much if they didn't know the right answer? Seems pretty risky to me.

Betting it all and getting FJ right is the strategy I plan to use.

What's the normal wildcard cutoff for the Teachers Tournament? I'd guess it's lower than for the College Championship, but that's just based on a feeling, not any actual data. They're not all Colbys up there.

If Ranjani had wagered 9201, I'd understand that she was trying to get ahead of Steve if he doubled up. But 8000 seems like she was trying to wager for a wildcard slot and severely overestimated her competition. Or maybe she thought she'd miss out on the wildcard if she got it wrong so it didn't matter if she bet a lot, but then it turned out she would have been fine with a lower (or zero) wager. Mostly I'm disappointed because I was hoping she'd make it through after getting

syzygy.
But maybe the wildcard cutoff is usually at 19k, and I'm just a big old teacher-hating meanie.

Thanks for the links.

Am I reading that correctly? Is the first number of each pair the lowest-scoring wildcard qualifier, and the second number the highest-scoring non-qualifier?

If so, that's 2 out of 7 previous tournaments in which 15k (the amount I'd been thinking would have been good to aim for) wouldn't have been enough, 3/7 in which 12k wouldn't have been enough, and one more in which 12k would have been a tie for the last wildcard. That's also 5/7 in which 9k wouldn't have been enough, which makes "if I get it wrong, it doesn't matter what I bet" seem a lot more reasonable. Despite the last few years dragging the averages down, I guess the Teachers Tournament is pretty tough to wager for. Seems like getting FJ right really is the optimal strategy.

Nah - a lock game so FJ doesn't matter is always the best strategy.
