Louisville was the only Southern city that was possibly named for a king that I could think of in the thirty seconds. If I had framed the clue in my mind as "name an important Civil War city," I might have been able to pull Charleston.
I was flummoxed by "written only in cursive"; I couldn't begin to think of what that could mean, and it didn't occur to me to try to think of the UN's official languages.
I checked the "pine to wood" box for Trojan Horse, but I think lucking into interpreting "among those who emerged" as referring to a single occurrence rather than to a series of unconnected births was seminal (ha) to my get.
I didn't check the "not something I recalled seeing previously" box for plumbago because once I came up with it I thought it had a vague ring of familiarity to it, which I suspect came from the BotD game where it appeared.

I had to read tues/wed/thurs on the board. I totally WAGGED Plumbago as a joke answer, while cognizant of the Plumbum / lead equivalence.
I could not get to the Trojan War as I didn't/don't realize it is considered Mythology. Sure there's plenty of hyperbole, but nobody is breathing fire IIRC. Major props to Big Daddy Matty for the snarky comment about the ribs!

Knew back pain <-> lumbago; adding the p and seeing "plumb" (lead) quickly confirmed it. Knew Ulysses designed the Trojan Horse, so was pretty confident with that + "pine." NHO basking shark.
