CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Gary Waters is from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Gary, last year, my wife was among thousands of people who traveled to places like Kentucky and Tennessee to witness the total eclipse of the sun. Did you do that? Because I know you have now witnessed how many total eclipses?

Gary: That was the third one I've seen.

Alex: Wow.

Gary: And we ended up in Tennessee on the eclipse line there.

Alex: Did you meet my wife?

Gary: No. It seems a bit crazy to travel a thousand miles or more just for two and a half minutes, but it was worth it. And by the way, there's one coming up through the continental United States in 2024. And I hope just as many millions can see it then.

Alex: Okay. Good for you.

Alex: Kate Fink, journalism professor from New York and a new mom. Tell me about the baby.

Kate: Yes, I am. She's 8 weeks old, and my husband Matt decided--he had a vision that her name should be something a little unusual, Catalyst.

Alex: Because she will bring about changes?

Kate: And she has.

Alex: Oh.

Kate: But we compromised. It's her middle name.

Alex: Oh. What's her first name?

Kate: Her first name is Valerie.

Alex: Okay, good. V.C. Valerie Catalyst, all right.

Alex: Josh Hill, network engineer. Now, at the beginning of the program, for three days now, when Johnny introduces you, you do this movement.

[Alex mimics Josh's hand gesture from contestant introductions.]

Alex: Is there any significance to that?

Josh: Just--I like tigers, I guess.

Alex: Okay.

Very predictable that lead came up in OLD NAMES FOR CHEMICAL ELEMENTS.

Kate & Gary show up for taping day and find out there is a 3x champ with big bucks on the throne. One way to compete against such a person is to have the good fortune to find Daily Doubles. Gary found DD1 with the scores low & close.

2000-300 ended up saving Gary 1700 since it was that scary (for too many contestants) Bible category.

Kate found DD2 trailing 8400 to 5700 to her 3200. 1000 was the wager since it was that scary (for too many contestants) Sports category. Oh, she got it right and got herself into…still third place.

Aw, I hurt their feelings, now Kate & Gary won’t want to post here. At least I did not mention any car models.

The FJ! clue was one of my more less confident solves as I immediately wrote the correct response and like Josh, properly with no apostrophe. During think time I had no idea if I was right as I was only keying off the word, “armory.” For a 3-state meeting place I considered Delmarva. I even had a brief detour to Ft. Knox.

Josh was position to throw away $1,286 if he wanted to land on $100,000 on the nose. His wager was $1,244 which got him up to $102,530 while on a miss he would have had $100,042 whatever that proves.

For the TOC Josh is in 6th behind:
College Dhruv
Teacher from 5/18
Rob Worman 6
Gilbert Collins 5
Rachel Lindgren 5

Josh moves ahead of Ryan Fenster 4x $90,198 although Ryan’s totals could change. Is Josh’s total enough without a fifth win? Nope, just ask Tim Kutz the alternate from November 2017 with 4 wins and $107,000.

Famous armory evokes Harpers Ferry. A quick check on the second part (yep, near Maryland and Virginia considering I visited Monocacy in MD and Harpers Ferry in WV in the same day and stayed in VA that night). Locked in.

Does anyone else watch J! with closed captioning on? The 'Ecclesiastes' and 'Psalms' responses' captions were swapped on WABC.

Did not get FJ! Ended up writing down Langley.

Congrats, Josh!

What's up with two historical georgraphy FJ clues and then having them be about the same part of the world?? And I’m surprised this wasn’t a triple get.

Well, they ALMOST got all the Bible clues correct. The writers, I mean. David is not said to be the author of the book of Psalms. Rabbinic tradition says he assembled the book, including his own psalms as well as psalms from previous generations. I'm not aware of any tradition or scholarly argument, ancient or modern, that says David wrote the whole thing himself.

ran homophonic pairs and Bible study, picking up trash in those categories. Also got oysters.
Guessed West Point for FJ just to have something. I wasn't getting Harper's Ferry out of that. :(

I don't remember the exact wording of the question, but I don't think it claimed he actually did write it but rather that it was traditionally ascribed to him.

I got FJ within several seconds, having visited Harpers Ferry several years ago. It's gorgeous.

There was a somewhat hidden TOM in there - the word "today". It was reasonable to assume that it was in a then-existing state, and where else have the boundaries changed over time but in what's now West Virginia?

Another excellent outing by Josh Hill, including a sole get on a tough FJ. My girlfriend and I disagreed on whether the 1964 in his winning total was a reference to his birth year or not. She thinks he is way too young for that.

I didn't get Roy Campanella because the man was biracial, half Italian and half black, so "African-American" didn't register for him. My fault for trying to apply some logic to that silly term, I suppose.

Missed FJ; went with West Point, too.

Yeah, I'll take under age 54 as well. I'll even take under age 34. How could 1964 as Josh's birth year even be up for discussion? Exactly how small is the viewing device?
