It also may have helped to remember that the category was "American Quotes," ergo, something famous in itself, not "The Constitution," some aspect of that document.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Tue Jun 05, 2018 12:11 amIt seems to be a little over 50% here, so take under 60% for the poll. I call it a red ink final when those of us who missed it may have been helped by crossing out a lot of words and leaving just "Benjamin Franklin" & "2 things."This Is Kirk! wrote: ↑Tue Jun 05, 2018 12:05 am This is bizarre. I thought FJ would be a triple-get and could not believe it was in fact a triple-stumper. I fully expected to come here and everyone would be saying they couldn't believe no one got it right. How wrong I was.
For the record I didn't know Franklin's original quote referred to the Constitution.

I got thrown off by 'durability'. There are quite a few words that would have made this an instaget for me (e.g., inevitable, certain), but 'durability' set me off in the wrong direction and I never recovered. As far as the get rate, it seems a reasonable percentage got it only because they had nothing better. So it seems like it will be reasonably high in spite of itself.

Western art = Remington more times than not. I'm guessing Ian won't forget that soon - along with the concept of wagering strategy. He certainly didn't look very happy at the end there.
As for FJ, I wasn't aware that the phrase related to death and taxes was attributable to Franklin, and the clue wording didn't help.

Respectfully, this seems to be fake news, and of different provenance than Ben F. Since Boardies are always picking up crumbs and learning, best not to mislead. I'm going to add a caveat to my signature for newbies to warn of dumbness afoot.John Boy wrote: ↑Tue Jun 05, 2018 7:37 amI thought the wording of the clue was somewhere between very odd and totally misleading. And I, like you, got the correct answer only because of knowing the quote.
Most often, the quote is left unfinished. In its entirety:
In this life the only certain things are death and taxes. And death is preferable because nobody comes after you a year later to audit you.
From the internet, therefore true :
"... is usually attributed to Benjamin Franklin, who wrote in a 1789 letter that “Our new Constitution is now established, and has an appearance that promises permanency; but in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.”
For the record, "Checks and Balances" is mostly owned by:
Charles-Louis de Secondat, Baron de La Brède et de Montesquieu (January 18, 1689 – February 10, 1755), more commonly known as Montesquieu, was a French political thinker and jurist, who lived during the Enlightenment and made significant contributions to modern political sociology and the philosophy of history.
Even seeing the actual quote, I think it was a stinker FJ. Just for the mis-direction and negbait of checks and balances. But, as usual, the J! writers forced new knowledge and squeezed out something else I had stored there - maybe my precious lyrics to Gilligan's Island?
Disclaimer - repeated exposure to author's musings may cause befuddlement.

I think John Boy was only making a joke, but in case he was not, yes, modern income tax and auditing is much more recent than Ben, so the joke could not have been made in his day.twelvefootboy wrote: ↑Tue Jun 05, 2018 1:00 pmRespectfully, this seems to be fake news, and of different provenance than Ben F. I just noticed that this morning. I figure this must be some sort of record for someone passing away shortly after being mentioned in a Jeopardy question. Does anyone else know of an example anywhere close?billiej wrote: ↑Tue Jun 05, 2018 2:45 pm Sad news about Kate Spade, a surprising get for me last night.

Janet Gaynor, Arthur C. Clarke, and Stephen Hawking also died the day after being mentioned in a clue or having been the correct response to one. (Edit: Sorry, I had the Hawking dates backwards...he died the day before being asked about on the show.)seaborgium wrote: ↑Tue Jun 05, 2018 3:17 pmBenazir Bhutto.seattlecyclone wrote: ↑Tue Jun 05, 2018 3:09 pmI just noticed that this morning. Red Buttons died on the same day that he was the correct response to a clue. His death was reported around noon Pacific, so there may have been a few areas with an early morning airtime where the news of his passing came shortly after he was asked about on J!.
ETA: On a related note, JFK Jr. died on the same night when this Final Jeopardy! clue aired:
U.S. PRESIDENTS
The 2 U.S. presidents who died at the youngest ages, 82 years apart

I got Kate Spade but only because she got dead later this week. I'm not sure I would have gotten it if I'd watched the episode on Monday.
I'd rather cuddle then have sex. If you're into grammar, you'll understand.
