CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS
Alex: The first player we introduced today, Tommy Fagin, is from Brooklyn, New York. He happens to be an English teacher. And I wonder, knowing how students can try to poke fun at their teachers, if your name ever is a source of that when you're talking about English literature.
Tommy: They're clever, but I don't think they've read enough Dickens yet.
Alex: Oh.
Tommy: We'll get there.
Alex: How old are the kids that you're teaching English to?
Tommy: They're 15.
Alex: 15.
Tommy: Yes.
Alex: It'll come a little later.
Alex: Leslie Manion is a bookseller from Vancouver, Washington, who made a promise to her husband regarding her appearance here on Jeopardy!.
Leslie: I told my husband that if I win 5 games, we can have a chicken coop.
Alex: Why is he obsessed with chickens?
Leslie: He grew up with birds, raising birds in his backyard. And he wants to have access to a lot of eggs, I guess.
Alex: They taste good, too.
Leslie: They do.
Alex: Yeah.
Alex: Ian Booth, we keep introducing you as a trade specialist, but you're also an international movie star, aren't you?
Ian: Sort of.
Alex: Yeah?
Ian: When I was working in Benin in west Africa, a friend of a friend asked me if I would appear in a movie he was working on. I thought I'd be an extra in a small, local production, but it turned out I had a lot of lines in a movie where I was the only actor who hadn't flown in from France or Senegal.
Alex: Did they pay you?
Ian: I received $30, all of which I had to spend on my own wardrobe.
Alex: Yeah, starting out in show biz. Don't give it up.
TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
MAMA TRIED $1000: Before advocating free love & standing trial for obscenity, she had 2 children with first husband Canning Woodhull
LOOKIN' BACK TEXAS $400: In 1822, this man, called the father of Texas, founded the first American colony in the Mexican province of Tejas
(Ian: Who is Sam Houston?)
THE END OF "IT" $600: It's the first word in the motto of TV's "Survivor"
SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Leslie: $5,800
Tommy: $5,600
Ian: $3,200

Leslie: Wager $11,401 to cover Tommy.

Ian: You ought to try wagering between $1,001 and $9,000. This will top a $0 wager by Tommy while still beating Leslie and Tommy on the Triple Stumper (should Leslie wager to cover Tommy's doubled score and Tommy wager to cover your doubled score).

Re: Monday, June 4, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]
Buzzy has the belt:
But as for Buzzy hosting? Alex told him he ain’t going anywhere yet.
I thought for sure Leslie was not going to win the game. Talking on Day 1 about what to buy if winning 5 games? Bye. I guess because it was the husband’s wish it was not a full jinx although the pay day was very low.
Gentlemen: If Leslie bets to cover (like she did) she will have 599 on a miss. You think you might want to stay above that figure? Tommy: If Ian doubles that is 22000. If you bet 10000 or 10001 you play tomorrow. Ian: Lots of choices although the farm should not be one of them.
My trapdoor was sprung early after the Survivor stumper in THE END OF “IT” so I’m pleased with two gone and the winner not paid much.
$2000 + $1000 + $599 sure is not a budget buster with the non-winners each making more than the winner. If Leslie comes in third tomorrow that will bring up one of those questions discussed previously here about better to win low and have the title or lose and get the $2K?
Off the FJ! category I had five names on the precall list: Hale, Franklin, Greeley, Henry & Tweed
Off the FJ! clue the only thing I could think to write was checks & balances. At no time did it occur to me that the clue was pointing towards Franklin’s two famous things. Somehow constitution threw me off and I associate the correct response more with humor and a quip than something serious as the clue read to me.
Me being silly: Each of Ian’s stories about places of world travel had me picturing him as a CIA operative and his physical appearance had me getting vibes of disguises worn by Philip on The Americans.. Yeah, I know, I watch too much TV.

Frankly, even Leslie over-bet. She should have had $1,199 left.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Mon Jun 04, 2018 2:11 pm Gentlemen: If Leslie bets to cover (like she did) she will have 599 on a miss. Coryat: 33,600
46 R/2 W
DD: 2/3
FJ:
LT: Victoria Woodhull; Stephen F. Austin; outwit; "Waltzing Matilda"; Frederic Remington (DD)
I was completely blank on FJ! The "death and taxes" quote never sprang to mind. Apropos that they had a "hot mess" clue shortly before those wagers. Woof.
I also failed to convert on the Morocco DD because Arabic was just too obvious. I did, however, WAG Remington because he was the best example of a Western artist I could think of.
Mama Tried was a clever category name.
I'm surprised they accepted just Ethel Rosenberg's last name given that Julius was mentioned in the clue.
"You were on the right track" with a guess of Wonder. No, no she wasn't.

Sprinkles are for winners.

Trying to come up with something positive to say about FJ because we all want the three contestants to come here and offer their thoughts.
They all wagered positive numbers.

... But each of them would have been better off betting a non-positive number (given the actual bets of the other two players).
Perhaps someone should start a discussion topic called "You guys obsess over wagering nowhere near enough."

I thought death and taxes seemed a little light hearted but that was the best I had. I also considered the sun and the moon but that just didn’t make sense.
Best thing about the wagers was Alex saying the losers got more money than the winner.

Ouch. I wonder if Ian and Tommy ever figured out what they did to themselves. If Leslie comes in third tomorrow, her total will be less than Tommy's due to her over-wager. Ouch.
I liked all three contestants. I was rooting for Leslie mostly because it's fun to yell, "Hubby needs a new chicken coop!"

I thought death and taxes seemed strange within the context given, but I knew it was a Franklin quote and had nothing better, so...

I agree with the first part so ended up not getting anywhere near the Franklin quote. "Durability" just doesn't seem like the right word. Franklin used the words "permanency" and "certain."

I'm surprised they just took "Booth" considering all the Booth brothers were actors.BigDaddyMatty wrote: ↑Mon Jun 04, 2018 5:44 pm I'm surprised they accepted just Ethel Rosenberg's last name given that Julius was mentioned in the clue.
Also, I did like the clever use of "rimed" in the Coleridge clue.
Death and taxes came to me after about 10 seconds.

I'm sure Alex will be on it every day like he was on Gilbert and his 1% to his children.
