Game Recap for Show #7793, 2018-06-27

CONTESTANTS
Scott McFadden, a librarian from Muncie, Indiana
Amy Goodchild, a library youth services associate from Morton Grove, Illinois
Andrew King, a lawyer from Little Rock, Arkansas (whose 1-day cash winnings total $1,198)

OPENING REMARKS
Alex: Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. Thank you, Johnny. A point of interest: the player who finished in second place on yesterday's program went home with more money than Andrew King in winning the match. He was having trouble. He was ringing in a little bit early. Perhaps nerves. Maybe he's more settled, calmer today as he faces Amy and Scott. We're about to find out, aren't we? Let's go to work. Categories for the first round of play today are...

JEOPARDY! ROUND CATEGORIES
THE HERO'S JOURNEY (5/5)
CRAFTS & HOBBIES (0/1, including 1 missed Daily Double)
ALLUSIONS (5/5)
WAY BACK IN THE '60s, MAN (5/5)
A LITTLE MISTAKE (5/5)
MAKING A FEDERAL CASE OUT OF IT (5/5)

THE RIGHTS & THE WRONGS
Scott: 13 R (including 1 rebound), 1 W (including 1 DD)
Andrew: 9 R, 1 W
Amy: 3 R, 0 W

Clues revealed: 26
Triple Stumpers: 0
Jeopardy! Round Potential Lach Trash: $0

SCORES AT THE FIRST BREAK
Scott: $4,400
Andrew: $3,800
Amy: $200

CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: A couple of library people from the same part of the country as our challengers on our program today. Scott McFadden, you're from Muncie, Indiana. You are a collector, but you inherited the collection. Tell me about it.

Scott: Yes, I have a fairly large collection of Christmas nutcrackers that I inherited from my mother. She had been collecting those for many years, and she passed away a few years ago, and I got those. And my wife Donna and I have been adding to the collection since then.

Alex: Good for you. That's important. Sometimes we inherit a collection and we do nothing with it.

Scott: Oh, we both love Christmas, so it's...

Alex: All right.

Alex: Amy Goodchild, library youth services associate from Illinois. Now, you've been tap-dancing--

Amy: Yes.

Alex: For most of your life.

Amy: Yes.

Alex: That is on my bucket list.

Amy: You should do it.

Alex: It's something I would love to do.

Amy: I think you can do it in a few years.

Alex: I don't have a few years.

Amy: You have to be relaxed, comfortable. Enjoy it.

Alex: Okay, thank you for the advice.

Alex: Andrew King is our champion, with $1,198. I'm going back in your life now. You were involved in a boys' beauty pageant. What happened in the beauty pageant?

Andrew: Well, I had one other competitor. And--

Alex: Not much of a pageant, was it?

Andrew: It was boys. The boys' division's always small. So--so, I was obviously more handsome than him, even a little taller, which is also hard to believe, and I got to the end of the runway, and I did a move that one of the kids in my first-grade class did all the time. And I thought it was cool, so I did it. Ended up losing the pageant.

Alex: Do you remember what the move was?

Andrew: It was like this.

[Andrew places his hands on his head and does a full turn.]

Andrew: At the end of the runway.

Alex: That would lose any pageant.

JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Scott found the Daily Double on the 26th clue. Andrew had $6,200, Amy had $1,400, and Scott was at $6,800. Scott wagered $2,000.

CRAFTS & HOBBIES $1000: Terms used in this craft include batting, binding & block of the month
(Scott: What is sewing?)
...
[The end-of-round signal sounds.]

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Andrew: $6,200
Scott: $4,800
Amy: $1,400

FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
SPORTING EVENTS

VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Four-fifths for first place.
Scott: Wager $10,201 to cover Andrew.
Andrew: You're faced with a legitimate choice in strategy. You can either choose to cover Amy, hoping that you give the correct response and Scott doesn't, in which case you'll want to wager $5,401 to cover Amy's doubled score, but no more than $7,400 if you want to top Scott on a Triple Stumper; or bet up to $3,799 and win if both Scott and Amy miss Final.
Amy: Think about risking $3,600 or less, thereby beating Scott on the Triple Stumper (should Scott wager to cover Andrew's doubled score). If you also want to beat Andrew on the Triple Stumper, should Andrew choose to attempt to cover your doubled score, then wager $1,600.

FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
This annual event first held in 1934 includes play in areas named Pink Dogwood, Flowering Peach & Azalea

FINAL SCORES
Amy: $9,200 + $6,601 = $15,801 (What is the Masters Tournament?) (3rd place: $1,000)
Andrew: $13,000 + $13,000 = $26,000 (What is The Masters?) (2nd place: $2,000)

Today’s to BMS or not to BMS: Pw was good enough without needing it to be PwC for the Oscars clue. Unlike most people Brian Cullinan may not be happy to see his name in a clue.

Let’s see who will (or should) get this FJ! clue right:
Spoiler

Pink Dogwood - (Singleton !)
Woof

Azalea - (Singleton !)
DadofTwins

Flowering Peach went unused.

In looking at TD 237 I noticed Ryno has not posted since 2016.
Here is the complete players list for that TD:
Spoiler
1. Creed Bratton
2. Lampy
3. Tpmorrison
4. ElendilPickle
5. MarkBarrett
6. BigDaddyMatty
7. gamawire
8. Holocene Hero
9. Magna
10. Peachbox
11. immaf
12. psgola
13. Blue Lion
14. dot888
15. mennoknight
16. nightreign
17. dnbguy
18. DadofTwins
19. Woof
20. alamble
21. whatisbishkek
22. tjconn728
23. Caboom
24. clprez
25. lisa0012
26. econgator
27. goforthetie
28. Peggles
29. TheyCallMeMrKid
30. Diceland
31. Vermonter
32. Abraxas
33. barandall800
34. Rackme32
35. jjwaymee
36. CheezeWhiz
37. sillymonkey
38. RandyG
39. sethmoko
It would be nice if today’s clue goes 100% for all of us who see the clue.

If Scott packed a green shirt I hope he wears it tomorrow. When Day 1’s outfit is a shirt and tie I have no expectations of seeing a jacket on the second day.

With names like that it had to be a golf course. Peach -> Georgia -> Masters. It deserved to be a triple get, nice to see that it was.

"Perjury" is one of those words that I've heard, but couldn't grasp a definition of.

I had all but the last in the Mistakes category, but otherwise was cold on this board. Still got Lach Trash on "bread and butter pickle" even though I find them disgusting.

NHO that Whitney Houston song that I know of. Also don't recognize Radiohead or The Cure, and blanked on Motorhead.

Dogwood, peach... Atlanta... uh......... Oh, uh, um, that golf thing. The golf tournament. What the hell is it called? Major mental block and couldn't pull the name in over five minutes.

Ah, so peach was the key word. I thought the Masters was older than that though. But nothing else came to mind, so that's a get.

This boardie just *might* have known FJ having been there more than once. I highly recommend it.

So let's see, something positive about today's wagers...... they were better than yesterday's.

I wondered if that ruling might get reversed when we came back for Final, but wasn't surprised that it stood.

Some comments on Twitter led me to look at another call far earlier in the game that is a bit closer.

THE HERO'S JOURNEY, $400: Chevy Chase as Clark Griswold takes his family on a road trip to Wally World in this classic comedy

Scott said Vacation, Alex expounded National Lampoon's Vacation and ruled him correct. But Vacation is a distinct 2015 film in which Chevy Chase appears as Clark Griswold, but does not take the titular trip (Ed Helms as Rusty Griswold did). Whether a film released only three years ago can possibly be termed a "classic" is left to each of you to judge for yourself.

There has been a preponderance of red shirts on men lately. And tonight we have another woman with a streak of color in her hair. What does it all mean??

Got quilting. Thought that was a great clue. Did we run out of time in the first round? I don't remember any of the other clues in CRAFTS & HOBBIES

Amy's epic struggle with the signaling device did not pass unnoticed

We never get to see the players when the FJ category is revealed, but we often hear Alex remark that somebody isn't happy about it. Why oh why would any competitive player tip their hand like that?? (Unless that was a savvy move on someone's part)

If I get on the show and the FJ is BIBLE or CLASSICAL MUSIC, I hope I have the presence of mind to wince so that Alex can comment on it.

Given the poster, and how 'Animal House' is synonymous with 'National Lampoon's Animal House,' I'd say it's fair to not BMS or neg it.

Neither has Weird Al (my pre-call) which, come on, writers...passing up a chance to use 'I Lost on Jeopardy' like that? He wasn't the J!6 either.

I thought it was cut awful short. That was the last category left and Scott went right to the bottom clue. Good thing he did or we wouldn't have seen the DD. Bad for him though, since he didn't know the correct response.

I was expecting another extravagant video category in the second round to be the reason for the time running out so soon in J, but it didn't play out.
