I need some proof that SPAM with Macadamia Nuts is a real thing; it’s just such a random concept.

Good on ye, Kara! "Lenore" was the first thing that popped into my head, followed by "wait, she's IN "The Raven," but not in the title, I'd better go somewhere else." Didn't know there was another poem with her name as the title. Darn TDs -- they make me keep learning things.
I almost went for "Ligeia," which I didn't/don't know how to spell and which might not have been from a poem title at all. I think it's a short story or from some Hammer Horror movie that I barely remember!

I could be swayed on that...

It’s super non-specific, and I didn’t see it in time for a BMS prompt, but at the same time, it isn’t completely wrong, either. If more people had the same issue, I might have went the other way, but enough people were specific that I decided to count it wrong to start.
Mister CAY,

Allow me to make the case that the question itself is non-specific. To be honest, I had no idea that a chipotle is, in fact, a jalapeño. But is not a jalapeño a pepper? Ergo, a chipotle is a pepper.

Your game, your rules, but I don't see a basis for marking me wrong. And why should it count a whit that the other players all answered jalapeño? Think Different, no? FWIW, I read the question verbatim to my foodie friend and he said "pepper"

Yeah, I guess you’re right. I rushed this one and didn’t make it specific. I’ll fix it in the morning.

I honeymooned in Hawaii a few years ago, and while I didn't see Macadamia SPAM, I DID purchase a bag of SPAM-flavored macadamia nuts. It sits unopened on my refrigerator, as a reminder of the absolute Hawaii-est thing we saw on that trip.

Re: TD 388 - Mystery Theme! - Q3 and bonus revealed

Post by SenseiCAY »

Thanks for bearing with me - I'm having some growing pains using the TD tracker (I would have had to modify my own tool to do this one, since I'm scoring bonuses live, as opposed to after all of the regular questions). "Pepper" was counted as correct on 2A, and xxaaaxx's response on that one was also fixed. Sorry for the issues.

At any rate, we're gonna continue the reveal with Q3:

Q3 - Letter and answer required. You will be given a clue about an event and asked to identify something about it. Each of the events described occurred in the same month of the same year. For a bonus, name the common month and year.
  1. The first meeting of WHAT GROUP, consisting of, among others, Allen Dulles, Gerald Ford, and the sitting Chief Justice of the Supreme Court at the time.
  2. The first use of WHAT NOW-UBIQUITOUS TECHNOLOGY occurred during the Army-Navy football game, as commentator Lindsey Nelson told the television audience, “Ladies and gentlemen, Army did not score again!”?
  3. Americans got to see WHAT BAND for the first time, as a clip from one of their performances was shown on the CBS Evening News?
  4. The British Union Jack was lowered and a new black, red, green, and white flag was raised, symbolizing the independence of WHAT AFRICAN NATION?
  5. The UN General Assembly approved a resolution which stated, among other things, that no nation could lay claim to sovereignty any portion of WHAT LOCATION? It also stated that exploration there would be in the interests of all mankind, nations had jurisdiction over their own objects there, and that humans were to be rendered aid in case of emergency there, regardless of nationality.
  6. The British government granted independence to WHAT NOW SEMI-AUTONOMOUS REGION off the coast of Tanzania?
  7. The birth of WHAT ACTOR, who starred in the 2001 film “Ocean’s Eleven” and the 2011 film “Moneyball,” and produced “The Departed” and “12 Years a Slave?”
  8. The Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland dissolved into what would become three present-day countries. Southern Rhodesia would become the present-day nation of Zimbabwe. Name EITHER OF THE OTHER TWO MODERN-DAY NATIONS composed of the land that once made up the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland (graded separately).
  9. Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Higher Education Facilities Act. This was the first of a series of domestic programs best known by WHAT TWO-WORD NAME?

For the record, I didn't figure out December, 1963 until I figured out the theme of the whole quiz. Thankfully I did have an idea of a general time frame, which did help at the end. If only I had worked out what the bonus to the other one was the same way, because I practically knew I was going to get high scores on two of the questions since I have a notoriously hard time recognizing faces. I can tell Princeton's relation to the theme NOW, of course.

Yeah, on that one, I thought it might be easier to get if you figured out the theme first, but I figured the Warren Commission would have given you a pretty solid educated guess regardless, and a little less than half figured out the month/year combination one way or the other.

It was just the opposite for me: figuring out the month/year here led me to (what I took to be) the theme.

I still haven’t figured out the Princeton link to the theme. (Nobody tell me before the final reveal, please.)

I don’t remember whether I, like Sideshow Bob, referred to Princeton as a clown college when I submitted that bonus. I know I thought about it.

Well I think I should have gotten some kind of special bonus for volunteering the words, "oh what a night. Late December back in 63 what a very special time for me..."
I'd rather cuddle then have sex. If you're into grammar, you'll understand.

I've put up some things hinting at the theme - if you know it or have figured it out, no spoilers, please!

FG, I did appreciate the extra info, but alas, no bonus - it took me too long to see the light.

Wow, who knew that young Andy Petite and young Mark Texiera were doppelgangers? I guess the year on the card should have warned me off.

Must have mixed up Easter Island and the Galapagos going too quickly.

Not like it's going to matter, though. Alfonso freaking Soriano a sheep? Yikes.

That and the fact that the player on the card is a lefty thrower :)
