Re: TD 388 - Mystery Theme! - Q5-Q6 and bonus revealed

Post by twelvefootboy »

It was a tough game for me because of all the personalities/celebrities and I'm doing a lot of finger crossing at the reveal that my one WAG is right. I am terrible at faces.

My biggest letdown is that I didn't go with Andrew Wiles on Q4. I've never seen his image, but I know Fermat's Last Theorem on the blackboard behind him and he's always been a rock star for me. The bonus question scared me off because I thought of Ted Cruz only for Harvard, and Wiles only for Oxford?/Cambridge?.

It's been fun, SensiCay, and I don't think anybody can spoiler the theme to me as I am still clueless.

Re: TD 388 - Mystery Theme! - Q7+bonus and Q8 revealed

Post by SenseiCAY »

For Q7, we had a music question. My apologies, as this one played a bit harder than I had hoped (maybe easier than FG's aural questions on the recent ring [j/k...those were fun...but they were pretty challenging]), as I originally planned this as an aural question, but didn't have time to cut all of the audio. At any rate...

Q7 - Letter and answer required. Based on a (possibly redacted) chorus line (term might be used loosely), give me the title and artist. All of these were on the Billboard Year End Top 100 in the same year.
  1. “I wanna [title] / and party every day”
  2. “Ooh, [title], every day. / I wanna tell you [title], every day / I wanna be with you night and day”
  3. “Missing one angel, child, ‘cause you’re here with me right now.”
  4. “I’m not talkin’ ‘bout movin’ in / and I don’t want to change your life / but there’s a warm wind blowing, the stars around”
  5. “Yeah they was dancin’ and singin’ and movin’ to the groovin’”
  6. “I love you / I can’t explain, the feeling’s plain to me”
  7. “Oh I’d better learn how to face it, [title], oh I, oh I’d pay the devil to replace her”
  8. “Ooh, then I suddenly see you/ Ooh, did I tell you I need you / Every single day of my life”
  9. “Oh, [title] / I believe you can get me through the night”
  10. “[title] that make the whole world sing / [title] of love and special things / [title] that make the young girls cry / [title], [title]”

Yeah, you're right - unfortunately, you put it for letter B and I didn't catch it, which is why you're listed for B. I'll fix that

On Q9, we have a geography question, where you had to identify a big river.

Q9 - River name required. The United States has some big rivers. Measuring by the length of the main stem, according to Wikipedia, the Colorado River of Texas is 970 miles long, and is the 11th longest river that flows through the United States. Name any longer river (by main stem length) flowing through the United States.

Re: TD 388 - Mystery Theme! - Q9-Q10 + bonus revealed

Post by SenseiCAY »

Finally, in regulation, we have a before-and-after:

Q10 - Letter and answer required. Answer one of the following before and after clues. You know how it works – each answer is two phrases, where the end of the first phrase overlaps the beginning of the second. The overlap is usually one word, but some of these may have a longer overlap. Example: a current Supreme Court justice who also served as the third President of the United States would be “Clarence Thomas Jefferson.”
  1. William Sydney Porter plays Mondego in “The Count of Monte Cristo” and Superman in “Man of Steel,” “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice,” and “Justice League.”
  2. A German Shepherd quits his career as a movie star and tries to make it as a golf pro to try to win the affection of Molly Griswold, who is currently dating his old college golf teammate, David Simms, from the University of Houston.
  3. An unready king who promoted a fear of communism in the United States in the 1940s and 1950s.
  4. C.S. Lewis series of books on a mishap involving Janet Jackson.
  5. An American satirist known for collections such as “Men I’m Not Married To” and “Death and Taxes” goes to Hollywood and stars as Tess Shelby on “As the World Turns” and Darla Marks in “Dazed and Confused.”
  6. An area of the US known for a type of severe weather lobs the ball to a teammate, who jams it home.
  7. Longing to return to the familiarity of his own abode, Alan Arkin stars as John Singer in a film adaptation of Carson McCullers’s debut novel.
  8. A ship’s lookout tower is manned by a series of Russians, each fitting inside the next.
  9. In an alternate ending, after moving to Seattle, Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling sing a duet asking, “Are you shining just for me?”
  10. A famous Dominican fashion designer known for having dressed Jacqueline Kennedy retires and takes a second job as a hired security guard.

Dang! The last couple days I've been in Owensboro, Kentucky feasting on all-you-can-eat mutton at the Moonlite Bar-B-Q Inn. The sheep are hitting back so hard!

You're not kidding. I would have sworn that KISS would have been the sheep for the lyric question, so I went for Wild Cherry instead. If only I could have remembered the last name on one of them, though...

I had to work backwards a little to identify the original artist of “Baby, I Love Your Way.” As a child of the ‘90s, the Big Mountain white-boy reggae cover is the one I remember, but the other lyrics I recognized were clearly from the mid-to-late ‘70s. I worked back to Frampton quickly enough from there. (At least I didn’t give myself an opportunity to neg with UB40 there.)

Wow. I submitted at the last possible minute - literally - so I had no time to contemplate the mystery theme - but wow, impressive puzzle construction! Kudos to you :P

Five sheep for 46 points and I still wind up in the top 10 with a final score of 44 - really appreciate those bonus opportunities. :)

Thanks for hosting!

Even this early in my time playing these, it was probably my best shot at a victory. Should I curse Woof for pulling ahead or Wild Cherry for being too memorable?

I'll see your five for 46 and raise you seven for 66, with a RTFQ wrong answer to boot. This is by far the worst I've ever done on a TD. Still had fun though!

Curse us both, but recall that I was bit by that same sheep, too. Most galling since I could have named 8 of those songs and artists. Great TD, and congrats to you and ElendilPickle for your strong finishes. No one who knows will believe that I got a musical mystery theme
