Did not need "sound familiar" on Monday.
No idea on strain even with the "str" hint.

Thu - Thought Thurmond, didn't write it down, couldn't come up with a civilian
Fri - Alamo

Can't say if I -needed- 'sounds familiar' since that's what I glommed on first, not trying to tease out paramnesia by itself first. I can say I wouldn't have instantly gotten it.

'Sound familiar' was such a dead giveaway that I didn't need to spend any time on 'paramnesia'. I don't remember seeing that word before, so while I'm not 100% sure I could've sussed out deja vu in 30s with it alone, I'm not willing to say I would've been lost w/o the hint.

I definitely wouldn't have gotten 'strain' without the "this 'str' word" hint, though.

Somehow danced around China and DPRK without putting the two together

Drew a rare complete blank Thursday

Another 'meh' final week.

Played Monday off Clue of the Day, had no idea initally, but got it later outside the time limit I give myself.

Friday, first thought was the Alamo, but came around to Lexington. Not sure if I would have added Concord or not.

Like others, I blanked on the recent history, and struggled for someone more identified with NC... (Too bad neither his home state nor the lying in the Capitol were noted in the Current Events thread...)
Not much luck on the extras..."Strain" occurred to me but I didn't bite...Somehow I read Central America as Central Europe...!

I didn't catch the word "river" Wednesday, and nothing else in the clue did anything for me, so I ended up hoping it was a reference to Bron/Broen and WAGing Denmark and Sweden.

Clammed on strain.

I probably needed "sound familiar?"

Ended this season with a streak of 8 gets in a row. I checked the box that "sound familiar?" helped me since I don't know for sure if I could've deconstructed paramnesia correctly.

Can't wait for this year's SHC to start Monday.

Got Monday’s response through working out paramnesia; didn’t need “sound familiar” clue
North Korea and Russia on Wednesday (there is a Friendship Bridge between the two countries, but over a different river)
Lexington & Concord on Friday

Thanks, MB or polling the strain question. I had no really parsed the clue, knowing from the "str" that it would be strain. The writers really "strained" for this one imho. I've never seen it described technically as "stretch", always just as deflection. But I don't do much tensile stuff. I also didn't realize the need to normalize it to length as the clue says. It's at 28% now, which is a testament to how good the boardies are, and that maybe the writers know where the TOC level is at.

Did not need or want "sound familiar?" I detest that sort of tacked-on cutesiness in FJ clues. Be as cute as you like as long as it's embedded.

The bikini story was very familiar, and I knew enough Korean War to make the Yalu river clue a gimme. Answered "Lexington-Concord" Friday without qualms.

On Thursday, I thought of Billy Graham, but not until Friday. So the worst of both worlds. Within the time frame, my brightest ideas were Andy Griffith and Richard Petty.
I'm smart and I want respect.

Guessed US and Canada just to have something
Could not think of a plausible NC man. Mrs P got it. I felt stupid. If I'd keyed in on "private citizen," that might have jogged my memory. This should have been easy.
Bunker Hill

No clue on strain. Given some time and a few guesses, I'd probably have suggested that as a possibility, but not with any particular confidence.
Got stuck in SOUTH America for the DD. Paused the show and went through every possibility without success. Then I re-read the clue for comprehension and got it right in 2 seconds. This is not the first time I've made this mistake. If I get the call, part of my training will be reminding myself to double-check which part of the world we're in. Another will be checking to see if the clue is specifying a number of LETTERS or of WORDS. This clue had that angle too, but I wasn't going down the wrong trail and looking for a 7-word capital that ends in the same 4 words as its country.

As far as getting the call goes, I think I've passed the point where I could make a good showing. My brain is just getting weaker and weaker. I'm losing my mind, Dave. I can feel it.
