Re: Summer Hiatus Challenge 2018--Round 1 Instant Replay (SPOILERS)
When visiting Greece a few decades ago, the story we heard about retsina was that the pine resin was added as a way to make it unpalatable to Germans as they invaded in WWII. Sounds like whoever told us the story was off by a couple thousand years.

relatively easy day 2 -- but damn that wine question. (in my defense, you can't expect anyone under 21 to know anything about wine, can you?)

I entered this game into the J-Archive in January, and I'm pretty sure Retsina ended up on a flashcard, which I probably never looked at again. (Greece for $400). I knew the answer looked like "pine resin", so I put "pinaret." There goes my perfect week.

Minimal drinker here, but I got "retsina" because of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series.
Re: Summer Hiatus Challenge 2018--Round 1 Instant Replay (SPOILERS)
For Day 1, was on a roll for the first seven (at least, I think I was doing OK to that point) and then slammed into a brick wall. Had to CLAM the final three. Probably not an auspicious start. I think (hope) I did better on day two's questions.
I'm not the defending Jeopardy! champion. But I have played one on TV.

Day 2 was not a good day for me.
However, there are many days left.

Day one - why not miss the softball about my home state (Missouri Compromise)? I don't like it when the clues bury the "this (blank or blah blah) as a bait and switch, but kudos to the creator for mimicking the show writers. I always believed the first years of the show used credible clue constructions that might actually be the answer to a question.
RTFQ, 12footboy, RTFQ
Day two - Answer "Lie Detector", then notice both words are in the clue, and forget to do anything about it. I figured I shouldn't CLAM after committing, and I shouldn't take all day to retrieve the proper term.
Failed to get keratin because I was spelling it "carotene". May have worked on the show if you mumble it out good.
This is a fun distraction - thanks to all the hard workers.

I needed the TOM "for your thought" to make my coin-flip settle on penne.
Teems with quiet fun.

Oh yeah, cannoli isn't pasta. The "Mmmm" bit, apparently there to cue "starts with M," made me think instead that I should guess a dessert.

A category about pasta? And it's the higher-value? Please and thank you!

I have a feeling there's a big negbait on that 6 point mythology question. Went with Baal like probably almost everyone that answered. Bring out the Savage Question song.

Oh... right. I don't know why seeing "Canaanite god" short-circuited my brain to Baal even after I knew the answer to a similar question at pub quiz a couple of weeks ago. (If it's any consolation to everybody, a certain guy named Brad was on my team and suggested Baal as a potential answer.)badgerfellow wrote: ↑Wed Aug 01, 2018 12:10 pmI have a feeling there's a big negbait on that 6 point mythology question. I took "last for your thoughts" to be a TOM suggesting "end of the alphabet," leapt [btw why does the board's spellcheck think 'leapt' is a misspelling?!?!?] to "ziti," and was very surprised when confronted with the obvious correct answer.
Not only the "mmmm," but "muff" and "small" are TOMs that will steer you in the right direction (and away from cannelloni) if you know certain things about Italian. ( I needed that help. )
Here in the central time zone, it's lunchtime! Maybe I'll go have some pasta with CLAM sauce.

Kicking myself for not having enough confidence in mjolnir to list it.

I was a hair's width away from typing 'mew mew' for that
The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.

I had to resist the urge to give "ziti" too. I wasn't sure what it meant in Italian, though. Apparently it means either "brides" or "bridegrooms".Saturnalia wrote: ↑Wed Aug 01, 2018 1:22 pmI took "last for your thoughts" to be a TOM suggesting "end of the alphabet," leapt [btw why does the board's spellcheck think 'leapt' is a misspelling?!?!?] to "ziti," and was very surprised when confronted with the obvious correct answer.
Couldn't remember the name of Thor's hammer, and resisted the Baal negbait only to give a different incorrect answer.
