Is Learned pronounced with 1 or 2 syllables? I was listening to the Trivial Warfare podcast and all the guests were saying Learn-Ed League
Yes, two syllables: learn-ed.
So Homer Simpson was wrong. Father does not know best. Is that what you're saying?

I knew three of the Death titles, have read two (didn't know Bowen, haven't read Agee. His book though often appears in crossword clues for "agee"). Death in Venice was on my mind last week with that romantic dandy exiled composer question. I also thought of Mann while failing to think of Hesse the other day. I was disappointed the Cather book had nothing to do with Becket, but I finished it anyway. I figure now I don't have to read My Antonia or O Pioneers.

The Hesse question (that I muffed) last week got me thinking about his bud Thomas Mann. Although I've read The Magic Mountain and Faustus, I have only heard about one novella he wrote, Death in Venice. Having no clue about the others (My Antonia and O, Pioneers were so unlikely to be it), I went with Death. Fortunately, he kindly stopped for me.
Bravo. I started the Magic Mountain a couple of years ago but never finished. Someone should publish an abridged version that keeps the story parts and omits everything else. I remember a stunning chapter where Hans Castorp gets lost in the snow, but so much of the book was lost on me. I hear Buddenrooks is more accessible- maybe I’ll start that one and see how it goes

I am very excited to say that despite still winning the Correct Answers Against race in A Magnolia, I successfully pulled myself out of the relegation zone. I managed to defeat my opponent one place ahead of me, swapping places with him. Not sure if that is a good thing though. The stats in B Magnolia look much more friendly.

Good luck to my opponent today, Vermonter!

The MD 23 questions were like a breath of fresh air to me after the previous few days. Pulled off a six-pack after realizing just before submitting that the casino card holder is called a shoe, not a boot.

Heh. I put boot, too, but didn't change it.

I'm friends with my opponent from yesterday on Facebook, so I knew he was a booze connoisseur (he's been "brand ambassador" for two businesses with "spirits" in their name, and another job title on his profile is "drinks writer"), and that he's currently traveling through Italy, so I gave him 0 for the sambuca question (which ended up being the only thing I didn't know). He proceeded to miss it and tied me 6(3)-6(5).
I wonder what his answer was, with those credentials. I flubbed with Galliano, myself.
Thinking about other Italian spirits, you've got Amaretto (almond flavored, not an anisette), grappa (a brandy), Frangelico (hazelnut/herbs) and, yes, Galliano (herbs)

I was almost certain grappa was correct because I've had it a couple times and it reminded me very much of the ouzo and raki I used to drink in Greece and Turkey back in 1971 when I was young and footloose and without much bread so reduced to bottom shelf spirits. I'll have to try top shelf.

Much to my surprise, I notched 4 of my 7 wins in the last 4 MDs, moving up from 26th to 19th place in A Taiga, with no chance of relegation! Would be nice to finish in the teens after a brutal start to the season, but I'm just happy to survive another rout

A barnburner at the top of A Piedmont with 2 days to go. We both have 34 points, with a differential of +24, but he is ahead because of TMP (163 v 153). It's a nailbiter. Third place in the rundle is on 31 points, so she has an outside shot.

Hah!! I got my first taste of raki while riding in the third class coach of the Orient Express alongside dozens of Turkish Gastarbeiter as a teenager in 1973. That has to rank as one of my more memorable train trips

Is there a way to click through to that page, or do you have to bookmark it? I've never seen that before (and it's amazing how many stats Thorsten does have on the website).

Barring any realignment, looks like I'll be joining you next season. My win yesterday, with only my second 9(6) of the season, puts me up five points over 2nd place for a lock on winning B Taiga. 8-)
I would prefer not to.

Brain: "Oh, that one word has something similar to Suomi in it. It's Finnish!"

Fingers: "S-W-E-D-I-S-H"

Fortunately, I still won 5(2) - 0(1). But yikes, that was terrible.

Hoo boy.

I lost on MD24, keeping me at 34 points. However, first place forfeited, docking them a point, and, because third place won, knocked him down to third.

That leaves me ahead by one point, with two people one point back. (Fourth is four points back.)

They both have a higher MPD than me (and second is higher than third). So I just need to do better or the same as both of them (either we all lose, I tie and they can lose or tie, or I win and they are irrelevant). Basically, I control my destiny.

8-8-8 for me this season with the last day deciding where I get a 9 in my record.

I play one FrankJ on MD 25 and the outcome will determine which one of us finishes higher in A Fjord this season. He needs the win, I need a win or tie. Good luck, Jeff!

Does that make you the Learned League Anitchrist?

Once again, I need a win to finish exactly at .500 and my lifetime record is just three above .500. Just call me Mr. Mediocrity.

After working my way briefly into the promotion zone in Taiga E Division 1, a slow fade resulted in a 6th place finish, despite finishing fourth in Total Match Points and Total Correct Answers, which were both personal records. And the final ignominy was losing on MD25 2(1)-3(1). I will stay where I am for LL79.

Hey hey! A win and I'm in. I felt good knowing that enough of them were outside of my opponent's wheelhouse that they weren't going to 9(6) me and wouldn't miss out on a tie.

Once more standing pat. Slowly getting better though, by this rate I might make it to A in another two...three seasons...
