New J! web site, all old file links are 404'd

Post by Robert K S »

The show has a new website, and one side-effect for any link-collectors is that all the file links to the old site are now broken, including links to player pictures. Or, who knows, maybe they're somehow still accessible with some URL tinkering? Here are some old player picture URLs (now dead):

Code: Select all

https://www.jeopardy.com/Assets/jeopardy/images/contestants/_season34/week_35/home/wk35_0507_0511_bishop_home.png

Code: Select all

https://www.jeopardy.com/Assets/jeopardy/images/contestants/_season34/week_46/home/wk46_0723_0727_tsai_home.png
Here's a player picture URL in the new format:

Code: Select all

https://www.jeopardy.com/sites/default/files/styles/contestant_home/public/2018-09/wk35_0507_0511_bishop_home.png?itok=aKJAm24R
I'm not sure what that itok query parameter does, but it seems like it can be safely deleted without affecting the file direct.

One might expect the new URL for the second old-format link, above, to look something like this:

Code: Select all

https://www.jeopardy.com/sites/default/files/styles/contestant_home/public/2018-07/wk46_0723_0727_tsai_home.png
But that doesn't work.

Seems it has something to do with preventing DDoS attacks:

I've tried to sign in. I enter my user name and password, but nothing happens. Do we have to register all over again?

I played browser roulette and had varying results. Chrome worked with my old credentials.

I signed in (using Firefox), nothing happened. Then I refreshed two or three times, and it finally showed me as logged in.

As an aside, when did they change J!6? I havent played since the end of last season, and it seems worse to me now.

Does signing in at the top from the home page and not at the bottom after navigating to J!6 help? I think that is what I did on Chrome when I got it to work. When signed in then the J!6 clues for September 10 are there. September 7 still shows when not signed in.

I prefer the old design as now it's more of a hassle to get the 12 categories ahead of seeing the game.
