Summer Hiatus Challenge 2018--TOC Instant Replay (SPOILERS)

Post by rjaguar3 »

Note: if you didn't qualify for the TOC and want to play the clues, just post in the daily thread, and your responses will be scored separately. (There is no longer a "peanut gallery" thread.)

Unmarked spoilers ahead!

To be honest, I never have considered Al Jolson as an actor. I've only considered him as a musician.

I probably did the worst in the Supreme Court category. Law is definitely my achilles heel.

I blanked hard on the law questions. Looks like I was drastically overthinking the 10-pointer.

Uh-oh! Looks like me and a bunch of others read the six pointer too quickly.

Yikes, me, too. Hoping "we want to give you points" applies.

Wow. Even after a silly RTFQ error on the 6-pointer, I somehow managed to get ahead of Schliemann. Can't we just end the TOC now?

Uhhh me too. Hoping that we'll use the LL rule of "first name listed"

Aw man. I had even typed out STU at one point thinking that would be the letter string used. But because I was assuming it would be used further in the word and was pronouncing it differently, I once again overlook the obvious.

Oof! The boards for this TOC have definitely ramped up the difficulty level.

Somehow I've never heard of the "boom goes the dynamite" meme — and I'm a Ball State grad AND a Pacers fan!

Bah! Two 50/50/90s: Erased Poland in favor of Latvia, then changed my initial response of Naples, thinking that "Two Sicilies" would refer to two different governments both on Sicily. Since I knew that Syracuse had been a Greek province way back when, I thought that maybe it would have remained separate from the Kingdom of Sicily. Bah again.

I answered Jonathan Lippe on the Most Interesting Man in the World because I couldn't remember what Gold... name he currently uses; Lippe (his stepfather's name) is what he used early in his career (I've seen him credited as Lippe on Gunsmoke and Bonanza multiple times). Hope that's okay.

Overthought the "unpleasant situation" clue and couldn't come up with "hot potato", which incidentally is one of my favourite of Bill Cullen's game shows. Underrated Family Feud clone that was a fun half-hour in the early '80s.

Geez, had two guesses for Nos. 12 and 15 today, and clammed. But both would have been right.

We drove through Pilzen on our way to Prague some 5 years ago (time flies) but didn't get to stop at the brewery. From Prague I brought back a couple of (empty) bottles of Czech Budweiser for beer loving friends.
