My first thought with animals was Noah, but I considered Confucius once I realized it was referring to the Chinese zodiac. When I discarded that, I had only a last-second guess of "zodiac".

Fairly certain I remember Amanda correctly giving Zoe Saldana.

Ruled out Buddha because I didn't think a religion-based answer would be "dismissed" as folklore. Would a question about Noah's Ark be considered folklore?

+1 here. Confucious was my first thought, but it didn't seem right. Buddha came to me with almost 0% confidence, but it seemed to fit a little better. I flip flopped, but settled on Buddha at the end.

A recent LL question had to do with a whole genre of literature (in India) involving various incarnations of the Buddha. Some of these resemble fables or folklore, so it is not surprising to me.

If it's extra-canonical, I don't see why it might not be considered folklore. Not all stories about Biblical figures are found in the Bible. (The story of Adam and Lilith, Ham's curse being black skin/the black race, and other stories derived from Biblical figures but not in the Bible might well be considered folklore.)

If he was said to have done what the Buddha did, unless perhaps it was canonical through some scripture, it would be folklore...but I agree with others that it's unlikely a story about Jesus or Noah would be referred to on J! as Folklore, even if extra-Biblical.
If you don't know a connection between the Chinese calendar and Buddha (I don't see anything so spiritual about that story either), Confucius is a reasonable response (so I told myself!... )

Well, it's not really the Buddha. The animals for the 12 year cycle pre-date Buddhism in China.
My gut was "yellow emperor" (Huang Di) thought that was very ups cure for a regular jeopardy Jane. My guess is they were thinking it was the Buddha, but that doesn't really make sense. I would have written it out and maybe the Chinese characters after had I been there.

A quick Google search on yellow emperor 12 animals brings up enough Sites to show an alternate right answer.

Jade emperor, Daoist deity, also credited. In face BEST answer.. Historical Buddha also credited though lived thousands of years after legendary zodiacal race.

I was totally lost on this final. The best I had was St. George purely off the dragon mention. My brother, who is very well versed in Eastern culture, said it sounds like something attributable to the Yellow Emperor but didn't think J! would ask a final about him. So he went with Confucius as an alternative answer.
