Vincent was back: http://www.j-archive.com/showplayer.php?player_id=12195
He improved with a game’s worth of experience and Nancy really showed what being at the champ’s spot was worth with a much better game today.
The FJ! category had me very tempted to write the correct response on a precall although I played it properly and waited for the clue. My instinct was right and Alex’s reading of the clue only made it easier.
The only drama was whether Nancy had bet enough. More than enough as it turned out. She has a 17,500 average the hard way.
The valuing on a couple of $2000 clues seemed off as asking for the India river or identifying the 1973 photo of the space item was easy money.

Welp, we've entered the bi-annual period where I have to DVR Jeopardy and watch it later so I can skip the political ads.

39 right.
Queen Consort (4), Letter Perfect (5), Complete the 21st Century Bestseller (4), Hats (2), Fun with Team Names (5), The Unseen (2)
Queen's Concert (4), Mythical Origin Stories (3), Come Up to the Lab (3), Ocean Liners (4), Other Rather Grand Canyons (2), "ALA" Cart (1)
Lach Trash: Toronto Maple Leafs; Daily Double: Charlotte, rainbow
Alex's accent did help me to think of Henry Higgins, but "Englishman" and "mouth" led me to Pygmalion also. I'm more familiar with it than Waiting for Godot.

Well, my goal to actually watch every night for the new season lasted about a week, so I'm back to checking recaps. I did not get FJ, but if Alex was doing accents, I wonder if I'd have gotten the clue if I had actually seen it. Since "Englishman" is already in the clue, probably not. If he said " 'ate" though, maybe?

Really, no one could get Maple Leafs when spotted team name, Toronto, and not actually an improper plural?
FJ was pure WECIB.
FJ was pure WECIB.
Re: Tuesday, September 25, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Beedle the Bard was the only book I recognized in that Books category.
Blanking on Adam Lambert cost me the run in Queen.
NHO "Alacrity", my only miss in "Ala".
My best get today was the Queen DD. I was able to put the pieces together by working backward from Charlottetown.
Lach Trash: Toronto Maple Leafs, escalator
No guess on FJ! I know nothing about Pygmalion outside its title, so any TOMs went right over my head.

We're not using the craps definition of 'hard way' here?...MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Tue Sep 25, 2018 11:48 am The only drama was whether Nancy had bet enough. More than enough as it turned out. She has a 17,500 average the hard way.
Why can't the English learn to speak?!
The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.

Also Port Charlotte Florida and Charlotte Amalie Virgin Islands. Charlotte has all that stuff but nothing in the US is named for her husband.

I've really been getting hammered on FJ so far this season. Shaw should have been the first person I thought of, but instead I thought of Wilde and The Importance of Being Earnest. Turns out it premiered in 1895, so didn't even fit the category.

I appreciated the shout-out to me on tonight's episode via the Edward Teller clue. If I had been on that stage, I would have been tempted to ring in with "Who am I?" That response would even have fit the "letter-perfect" category.

Alex probably would have had to go to the judges, but I'm sure it would ultimately be accepted!

Re: Tuesday, September 25, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
My memory that the show once asked for Pygmalion in FJ five times in one season seems to be false but between July 14 2006 and May 22 2008 they asked for Pygmalion twice, My Fair Lady twice, Henry Higgins once and Rex Harrison once.
Btw, 'play' + 'preface' very often = 'Shaw'. He probably spent more words on prefaces to plays than on plays.

No kidding. That's like when you slice your tee shot into the woods, take a Mulligan, and hit the second one 250 down the middle. Her two games have been night and day. Now to see tonight whether one or the other was a fluke.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Tue Sep 25, 2018 11:48 am Vincent was back: http://www.j-archive.com/showplayer.php?player_id=12195

Now there's something I did not know.Lefty wrote: ↑Wed Sep 26, 2018 1:50 am My memory that the show once asked for Pygmalion in FJ five times in one season seems to be false but between July 14 2006 and May 22 2008 they asked for Pygmalion twice, My Fair Lady twice, Henry Higgins once and Rex Harrison once.

I'm not at all sure why I read this clue and immediately thought of Shaw (except the British part, of course; but he's far from the only well-known 20th C. British playwright). And yet something in the clue just drew my brain to him. I took the roundabout way to the correct answer, by way of "My Fair Lady," but I got to Pygmalion just fine. I'll take it.

Re: Tuesday, September 25, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I'm sure the Irish would correct you that he's an Irish playwright, not British.
