So which will poll higher -- yesterday's FJ or today's? I have to think it'll be today's...

Note to self: "Sino-" is NOT a Pavlov for Israel (Mt. Sinai). Not the first time I've made this goof.

40,400 coryat, my top score so far this young season. Instaget final.
TenPoundHammer wrote: Thu Sep 27, 2018 8:05 pm I think part of my mental dead-end was that I didn't know the Alamo had any religious significance. I thought it was just a fort. So "Catholic" misled me into thinking maybe there was a famous church or religious-themed structure (like something along the lines of the Christ the Redeemer statue).
It was a Catholic mission. It's full name is The Alamo Mission in San Antonio.
I would prefer not to.

I thought the proposal was sweet... but my next thought was, "talk about an adrenaline crash - no way is he gonna win after that excitement!"

And this morning on reddit I see confirmation from the horse's mouth.

My comment was, of course, tongue-in-cheek. Congrats to Michael. And yes, I can verify that that can result in an adrenaline crash.

No guess on FJ! Even going just "Blah blah blah Texas landmark" and nothing else left me high and dry.
Seriously, dude?

I know there have been about a bazillion things you've told us you can't come up with, but if you can't remember the Alamo, then I don't now what to say.

I think it would have been hysterical if Evelyn had taken the opportunity to quip, "Alex, I just want to let my husband know that I want a divorce."

Another really strong, fine game for the champ to launch her into the J! Players Hall of Fame in only two games. Many congrats.

Yes, the Alamo was originally a Spanish mission which (as was typical) required military support because the territory had no other law enforcement and lots of bad guys and of course the Native Americans, who were sometimes not friendly to settlers. (said the guy who grew up in a sweet little house on Alamo Drive and attended grades K-6 at the Alamo Elementary School). :D

So yeah, if I've ever said some other FJ was an Instaget, I take it back. THIS was an Instaget.

A couple of head-scratching and jaw-dropping TS's - this French guy who helped out in the American Revolution, e.g. I was kind of surprised that the players ended up with the halfway decent amounts going into FJ since it seemed like there were more than the usual whiffs on easy clues. Appearances can be deceiving, apparently.

And I was expecting a reversal on "ladybird." I've never heard it other than "ladybug, ladybug." Is it a regional thing?

Ladybirds are what we in the US call ladybugs.

Did anyone else think of Corpus Christi for FJ? I got over it since it's a city and not a landmark (also because my dad commented aloud how easy FJ was), but it was a kneejerk reaction to Texas + Catholic.

I just blanked on "gopher" because I momentarily forgot the "G" requirement and couldn't sort through the rodent family in time.

No guess on FJ! Even going just "Blah blah blah Texas landmark" and nothing else left me high and dry.

Lach Trash on C. S. Lewis. A pastor quoted Mere Christianity a couple weeks ago, and I also have a hymnal that hilariously misrepresents a quote from it. (Opus -- you interested?)

i think that would have been acceptable...has league in the response and they are obviously in that league

You must have hated Glenn Weiss' (winner of an Emmy for best director of a special for the Oscars ceremony) who just proposed on air a few weeks ago.

First of all, well played.

As I said, the "religious" angle had me wondering if maybe there was a famous church in Texas, or a religious monument akin to the Christ the Redeemer statue. Then by the time I got "religious" out of my head, I just had a complete mental block. Another 30 seconds and I might've gotten to Alamo, but it just wasn't there.

I needed the American League neg on Diamondbacks. Blanked on Jaguars, NHO the other three teams to my knowledge. The existence of a hockey team in Vegas or a Canadian Football League were both news to me.

The Vegas Golden Knights made it to the Stanley Cup Finals in their first year of existence. This garnered a lot of publicity because A) they had been a historical underdog; nobody gave them a chance to even make it to the playoffs and B) it was viewed as a way to rally the city after the casino shooting last year.

I was really surprised the CS Lewis question (they not only spotted Mere Christianity but also added his fantasy writings was a triple stumper.
