Doug liked today’s draw and cruised to the victory. Besides getting to sing part of The Brady Bunch theme he also had the honor to notch a category run in THE COLD WAR as part of an opening 7-spot to begin the DJ! round.

I have watched J! since Trebek's start and the city in association with the movement has come up enough times (with a couple of Knox clues) to get through to me:
SpoilerShow

#7334, aired 2016-06-30 HISTORIC NICKNAMES $800: 16th century Protestant reformer: "The Pope of Geneva"
#7250, aired 2016-03-04 YOU'RE HISTORY! $1600: This man who died in Geneva in 1564 carried on the Reformation after Luther
#6751, aired 2014-01-13 RELIGIOUS MATTERS $1,000 (Daily Double): In 1536 this French reformer moved to Geneva, which became the center for his form of Protestantism
#6628, aired 2013-06-12 THE REFORMATION $1200: The Reformation's greatest leaders were Martin Luther in Germany & this Geneva-based Frenchman
#5845, aired 2010-01-29 RELIGIOUS LEADERS $800: During the 1500s under his leadership, Geneva became a major center of Protestantism
#5502, aired 2008-07-08 WORLD HISTORY $1200: In the 1540s John Calvin made this Swiss city a center of Protestant might
#5206, aired 2007-04-09 LITERARY GEOGRAPHY $800: In "Daisy Miller", Henry James calls this Swiss city "the little metropolis of Calvinism"
#4736, aired 2005-03-21 THEOLOGIANS $1600: Shortly after writing "Institutes of the Christian Religion", he settled in Geneva & made it a center of Protestantism
#4680, aired 2004-12-31 THAT OLD-TIME RELIGION $1600: With Mary I's accession in 1553 he ran to Geneva; he returned in 1559 & reformed the Church of Scotland
#3666, aired 2000-07-10 CALVINISM $600: This other John met John Calvin in Geneva & brought his ideas to Scotland
#2966, aired 1997-06-23 THE 16TH CENTURY $400: John Calvin moved back to this Swiss city in 1541, became a citizen & died there in 1564
#2955, aired 1997-06-06 HISTORIC NAMES $1000: This French Protestant reformer died in Geneva in 1564
#640, aired 1987-05-22 RELIGIOUS HISTORY $1000: When reformer John Calvin made this city his headquarters, it became known as "The Rome of the Protestants"
Doug began the game taking NEW ENGLAND from high to low values for an unusual start and from there most the clue picking was done more orderly. Whatever the reason it worked for a good start.

Saw "Lake" and still said "Zurich". I blame Zwingli.

Doug robbed me of getting a third triple stumper in a row. Let's see if I can finally get that 5/5. Almost certainly jinxed myself now though.

I'm interested in theology so this was a pretty straightforward FJ for me, allowing me to avoid starting the week 0/3.
Never been on J!, but once won a knockoff version that aired on local access TV.

I keep forgetting that Massachusetts is part of New England too.

Ran the Dutch category, but disappointed at the lack of stroopwafel. Almost ran Brick too, but blanked on Baum's name.

I usually do well in animal categories, but I got only the top box in Cobra Kai.

Also got all but the last in Entertainment, Ends in "O", and Dentistry.

Every word of FJ! was utterly meaningless to me. If the connection has come up before, then my brain didn't find it worth internalizing. I didn't even know what to WAG.

What a beatdown. At first I didn't think he'd get to five days, but he seems to be improving with each game. And he even threw in a J! round TDD!

Instaget FJ. I have no idea why. I don't know much about the Reformation, but somehow (perhaps from all of the clues Mark posted?), the Geneva connection stuck.

You can keep your avatar for at least three more games this season.

The TS call on 'Dan' felt fast. Possibly edited down?

I keyed in to Switzerland early but the brain decided to take me on a tour (Over here, Bern. Now coming up on your left, Zurich.) before pointing out the LAKE part of the clue...barely made it in time, but it -was- in time.

I discovered stroopwafels entirely by accident. A friend was talking about them in a live stream, and later the same day, I found a package of them at a Marshalls. (For some reason, TJ Maxx and Marshalls stores ALWAYS seem to have at least one package.) I was thrilled when I found that they're readily available at Walgreens... but I live in what has to be the biggest town in the US not to have a Walgreens. THEN the Shell station in town was rebuilt, and the new location started stocking them. I am now convinced that I have eaten so many stroopwafels that my blood is 10% caramel.

Doug mentioned on Reddit that he initially sang "Sweet Caroline," but was made to record the response in a normal speaking voice during the commercial break - seems it would have cost the show about $10,000 to license the relevant content.

"St. Pierre" led me to western Europe on Final; with no large city in France being on a lake (at least that I thought of), Geneva was the the most obvious choice after that.

38 right.

New England (3), Brick by Brick (4), From the Dutch (3), Cobra Kai (2), Karate (1), Kids (4)
Business Lingo (3), The Cold War (5), Entertainment Rituals (4), Dentistry (1), Authors' Fictional Places (4), Ends in "O" (4)

Lach Trash: The Walking Dead, The Thing (I assume that "from another world" wasn't required for a correct answer)

I wasn't 100 percent sure, but I remember seeing some things before about Calvinism and Switzerland, so "lakeside city" quickly lead me to Geneva.

I’ve had stroopwafels over in the Netherlands but I just assumed the ones sold here were crap. The Dutch love their afternoon pancakes! Easy FJ for me as Geneva is the only major Swiss city I missed seeing but I did research it before a trip there. It was nice to see Maggie get back in black. Those interviews made me feel some embarrassment for the contestants.

48 R
DD: 3/3
FJ:
LT: Dan, Kendo, Sinclair Lewis

So many words I hoped for in Ends in "O". (Camerlengo, Lanugo, Recitativo, Sostenuto, etc.)

They chose Kendo for the $2000 clue. :?

Not only that, it actually stumped today's contestants.

Started with Germany, but something about the lakes made me think that word was too important, so, thanks to traveling there a few years ago, had this image of walking across a bridge in Geneva next to a huge lake into an area with a lot of beautiful old architecture. Still a little ticked off at hyphens, because I think I'd be 3/3 in a fairly difficult week if that hadn't been the category name yesterday.

I had a suspicion that happened. Both he and Alex seemed to hesitate a bit too much, plus there was no way he wasn't singing "Sweet Caroline" after he had sung "The Brady Bunch."

Doug was extremely impressive in this game, but my favorite part of the episode was seeing Maggie pull herself out of the hole just in time for FJ!

I seemed to remember some connection between Calvin and Switzerland, so I went with the lake city of Geneva. It was a quasi-WAG, but a get's a get.

Interesting that both the Americanized ("dan") and Japanese ("don") pronunciations of the karate black belt level fit the part of the clue about sounding like a man's name. I wonder if Alex was prepared to accept either version.

I think it's my level of fatigue, but I had an embarrassing and costly miss of kenpo (a form of karate) for kendo. I might get both my Japanese speaker and wrestling fan cards pulled for that one.
Sprinkles are for winners.
