The guaranteed stumper of the day in my book was connecting the boxing match painter to the upscale department store in the B&A category as I would have been floored if that was not LT for me.
The FJ! clue had me immediately know to dismiss Havel and from there it was nice to lock in the correct guy and put the pen down as the category did not have me optimistic. It was nice of the champ to write the full name lest anyone think he was going for Randolph.
Jen’s $4000 on DD3 was more than most would bet although with a get she still would have trailed for the FJ! round. Alex would have had a fatter wallet in a closer game.
I’m glad Trebek picked the right story of Greg’s to go for as I appreciated hearing about TV & a school writing assignment.

I was 14/15 at the break, having run Tree and Phrases. My only miss at that point was How to Get Away with Murder.
All but Little Red Book in Books.
Not a chance on any of the Amanpour clues, though.
I'm disappointed that NTSF: SD: SUV:: didn't show up in the TV Initials category.
How was "redwood" a TS? NHO "Alpha Canis Majoris", which I found a much more understandable top-box TS.
Gwen Stefani had a "change" in her life? I thought she ceased to be relevant ages ago. I don't understand what "change" she had at the time, and her Wikipedia article isn't elucidating.
DJ! was insanely difficult for me. I ran the Mall Before & After category and got the 3 Crossword clues that were revealed, but was completely clueless on literally everything else.
No guess on FJ! Winston Churchill also being a writer was not unfamiliar to me, but that information just wasn't there. I had no idea where to even go on this one.

Christiane Amanpour worked at the same radio station as I did, but was there right after I left to go to grad school.

34 right.
Book by Its Cover (4), Greek Letter, Please (1) What Tree Am I? (2), TV for Short (4), Fill in the Phrase (2), Christiane Amanpour (4)
Facebook of Job (3), People in Science (2), Before & After at the Mall (3), Crossword Clues "Y" (3), Constitutions (3), American Music Awards (3)
Lach Trash: LeRoy Neiman Marcus, Mary Leakey
I remembered that Churchill had been an author, and the year made me think of the Peace Prize nominations being around World War II or slightly after.

Unfortunately for today's FJ, Churchill didn't even come to mind. But once I saw him as the answer, I had a "d'oh" moment.
My guess wasn't much better either. Especially considering that the person I came up with was only 10 in 1953, and still alive today. I clearly misplaced him in the timeline of history. But "Nobel Prize" doesn't give me too many options to think about.

The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.

Easy match today. I was rooting for the middle player but the 3rd DD did her in. Renaissance faires are still a thing?

Churchill seemed like the obvious choice, but I had no idea "literature" could mean non-fiction.

Coryat: 35,800
48 R/1 W
DD: 2/3
FJ:
LT: redwood, Alpha, Mary Leakey, Ethiopia (DD)
I considered Vaclav Havel, but the number seemed too high for both awards, so I locked in Churchill with about 75% confidence.
High-dollar Pavlov: Amharic = Ethiopia
OTOH, I had no idea about birch. Is either the canoe part or the fast-growing part common knowledge?

Surprised that a stickler for correct pronunciation like Alex would pronounce "gif" with a hard g like gift sans t and not the correct pronunciation of "jif."
Once again a celebrity-gives-the clues category in SJ cost us four boxes in DJ. Must we have those so often?
Guessed Dag Hammerskjold on FJ but that's all it was.

I may not have known the 1987 clue although it seems like the kind of thing that came up in elementary school social studies or a classroom report. By the time of today's 2018 clue? Not a problem:BigDaddyMatty wrote: ↑Wed Oct 10, 2018 12:32 am

Alex would've sounded like a doofus if he'd gone with the "correct" pronunciation. I think Steve Wilhite chose the incorrect pronunciation for GIF and we've been correcting him ever since. He's welcome to tell us it should be pronounced "throatwarbler mangrove," but he doesn't get (or jet) the final word. GIF has a hard g. It may have started with a soft one when it was used as jeek (sorry, geek) speak at Compuserve. Those days, like Compuserve, are long gone.

I remember hearing in grade school about Indians making birch-bark canoes. I don't know if it's common knowledge now, 100 years later. But yeah, it was then.BigDaddyMatty wrote: ↑Wed Oct 10, 2018 12:32 am

Re: Tuesday, October 9, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I had an OK---unspectacular---game. I scooped up only 4 TSs worth $3,200 in LT. Ran categories: trees, fill in the quotes. I will give myself a pat on the back for getting Leroy Nieman Marcus and Mary Leakey, as well as an Instaget on the Churchill FJ. I never knew that he had been nominated for the Peace Prize, but it's not surprising. I did know he was an accomplished writer, so the Lit prize was no surprise at all.
Congrats to Alex for making this game nearly a runaway and bagging a very nice second win.

I have no idea how I knew birch bark canoe, personally.
