That was one of those games when you could flip any one thing and a different person would win. Alan prevailed thanks to 1/1 on Daily Doubles while Ryan could not quite overcome 0/2. Alex finding no Daily Doubles was a clue short of the lead as well.

Three contestants in jacket and ties and all scores in five figures was a nice close to the week. Alex is now stuck in the awful position of middle of the tracker and wondering when the next TOC will occur. Is four wins and $92,880 enough?

Alternates Mike Lewis 4x $102,800 from 2014 and Tim Kutz 4x $107,000 from 2017 know first hand what it’s like to have good numbers and not quite make it. On the subject of alternates check the Millionaire thread for the appearance by 2006 alternate, Bud Humphrey.

The FJ! category had me spending the break recalling as many titles & characters I could do in the few minutes. The clue gave me enough of a hint where to go to wrap up a perfect week. I was glad the clue did not put me in one of those DavidNicklebyExpectations dilemmas.

Two Cities came to mind but to be honest I didn't really know what it was about. So I didn't go with it.

Congrats to Alex on his run, and Alan on his win. We'll see how he does on Monday.

NHO "Gone Girl" to my knowledge, so I bit on the "Lost" negbait. Couldn't process what "habitacion" meant either, but got the next two for a 3/5.

Insane workload today, so my brain was too fried to play along with any other category except for CC, which I ran.

"All Time Low" was my only miss/NHOI in "Time".

NHO "World Bank" to my knowledge either.

A Tale of Two Cities? Definitely not. Oliver Twist? Even more definitely not. A Christmas Carol? Don't be stupid. That's all the ones I can name, and time's up, I got nothing. Must be the ones I don't recognize.

1) It's Richard the Lionheart, Alex, not Lionhearted.

2) Sounded to me like Ryan said David Ben-Guron, not Ben-Gurion

3) Speaking of Ryan, I thought the rule was once Alex ruled you wrong, you couldn't change your response. Guess not.

4) Alex should have said, "You have 30 seconds, but you'll need only 5."

I took five minutes and had nothing other than "It's absolutely, positively, cross my heart, swear on a Bible, NOT EVER going to be A Tale of Two Cities."

After scuffling most of the week I finally put together a good game, with a 41,400, and it would appear the contestants did too. Would have been higher if I hadn't hazarded an expensive guess with "Balloon Animal," but in the moment that seemed to be likely to be the answer.

I think a lot of people on this board would have solved FJ with either the date in which the novel begins or the "mob violence" thing.

2) It sounded to me as if he slurred it a bit but intended the "i".

3) I just looked up "tenureship", and it seems to be acceptable usage. Perhaps they would have retaped a few seconds if the judges had nixed "tenureship".

5) There is no "ch" sound in "principito".

Edited to add: I said "Balloon Poodle". BZZT--thanks for playing. Also, Alex strongly reminded me of Michael Emerson.

Another close match spoiled at the end by a FJ that simply hands the game to whoever is leading (assuming they wager properly). Meh.

Also, I'm 99% sure Alex said 'no' before Ryan corrected himself (is tenureship even a word?).

I've never actually read A Tale of Two Cities, but I know it involves the French Revolution, so 1775 was close enough to allow it as a semi-educated guess.
Never been on J!, but once won a knockoff version that aired on local access TV.

"Stare decisis means that this, a past decision in a given area of law, should be respected."

Alan simply translated the Latin, and was ruled correct. I'm not thrilled by this, since it doesn't really fit the clue, but it was probably (?) consistent with J!...err, precedent.

Heh. Tepper used to sit next to me in Finance class. Obviously he learned more in the class than I did.

More than 5 for me, but I made an effort to faux-write legibly.

When they all finished over 10,000 I remembered my rule of thumb that an easy clue favors whoever is highest even when they're close together like that. And then we got a very easy clue.

Derped FJ. Translated as "pick a random Dickens novel" for me. Could thieves' gangs be interpreted as mob violence? went with Oliver Twist :(

That was my answer with the same logic behind it.
